So surfing by myself at one of my favorite spots, two SUK’s paddle out, never seen them out there before. One I have seen in another lineup on a surfboard, pretty much a always caught behind guy.
so they both immediately take the first wave in the set I’ve been waiting for and split the peak, I wait for a few more waves then pick off a deeper swinger.
I’m up and riding, see one of the SUK’s on his way back out turn and paddle into the section I’m racing towards, collapsing it behind him.
I wait for him to paddle back out. “There’s plenty of waves, you don’t need to take of on a wave I’m already on. Next time you see me up and riding, just let it go.”
“hey, you never would have made that wave, so just cool down, it’s no big deal.”
So as I’m responding as to what a rude and obnoxious kook he is, his fellow sukker paddles over to defend his buddy, tells me I had a bad attitude, and should find another place to surf. So I just unloaded on both of them at that point.
And there it is one of the core problems with Suk Kooks, refusal to admit how piggish and wrong their behavior can be, always wanting to turn it into the bad attitude of the surfers, never about their naked greed. Paddling for anything and everything that moves, without a thought for sharing with surfers in the lineup waiting their turn.
SUK kooks, there should be a friggin bounty on them…
The other day at Malibu, paddling for a wave, with an SUP paddling for it next to me, he is closer to the curl than me, but we are side by side. Malibu is a crowded spot. If you let a wave go by because someone else is paddling, you might let a good wave pass, should they not take it, for whatever reason. If you let a wave go by because someone else is paddling, you might never get a wave. I paddle if I’m in position - then, once up, if someone behind me has the wave, I will exit. No biggie, its L.A. and its crowded, but with a little respect all can get along. Anyway, SUP guy reaches over with his paddle as I’m standing up, and pushes me back, saying “I got it”. I just paddled away, because what I wanted to do to him would have ruined his morning and mine. At no time should those guys EVER use a paddle to push someone out of a wave. Why do they take those boats into a known surfboard spot? I think they should be exploring the coastline with those boats, not heading out to an already crowded surfboard spot. Just my opinion, to each their own I guess.
wow, pushed off by a paddle. Hardcore. Man I would’a tried to grab that thing outta his hands, or pushed back to try to bump him off so fast if I was prodded. crazy. They are thick at times at my break, but it’s summer and the waves really suck, so I haven’t even been out in a month. I did my Euro trip and didn’t see waves there either when I was on the coast. Sorry Wouter, I was going to try to get in touch with you, but I only did one brief day to visit my bro in Scheveningen, and it was flat. I can tell you that “new” herring is low on the list of fish I would eat again. I did it with the onions on the hot dog bun.
I always laugh when I see this type of comment. As paipo board rider I almost always get cut off at least once everytime I go out by someone on a shortboard or longboard, even though I can ride just as good as anybody else… It is all about greed and disrespect. It is not just SUPs.
True that. I always try to give myself a pep talk before I go out, to remind myself that everyone out there deserves waves as much as I do, and I don’t want to hurt anyone, or ruin anyone’s day. SUP’s become a focal point of my frustration sometimes, because I don’t believe they belong in a surfing lineup.
Geez, that made me mad just reading it Huck… if someone pushed at me with one of their goat boat oars i would take that as an act of violence with a weapon. it would have gotten really ugly really fast. that SUKker would not have finished his session… there is absolutely NO REASON for one of those guys to be touching anyone with their crutches… that’s COMPLETE BULL$#IT!
Hate to say it that way but SUP really does drag a certain class of people into the Ocean. People that wouldn’t be there otherwise. Much like the leash and modern longboards etc. etc. I’m actually glad I grew up in an area with a rep for localism. The occassional fist fight in the water. Baseball bat laying in the front seat etc. Being older now I use more discretion. But I can turn on the “stink eye” attitude when necessary. Mostly they get outta my way and mutter something like “crazy ol’ man.” Lowel
Nope. If you’re using a boat and a paddle at a surf spot, you “deserve” nothing. I’ve basically said this to SUKers after they complained about my dropping in on them, on purpose.
I’ve also told a few they were at a surf spot, not a boating channel, and so they should go away.
