Just picked up a gallon of dion iso resin. I have only heard good things about it. Why isn’t it used more often? There is only a few dollars difference in price. Am I missing something? Just wondering. Thanks
Glass shops are cheap (especially in Socal) and in Socal you can’t legally use surfboard grade Iso’s due to higher styrene levels so it is not available unless you import it from Norcal. Norcal, East Coast and Europe Iso’s are much more popular. Sluggo
Do you think that there is a noticable diffference in durability? I’ve been using 249A for a while and the stuff is somewhat brittle. Just looking for something new, I guess. I picked up a gallon at the WRV factory and they said they don’t use it that often. Looks exactly like 249A. Thanks.
Iso’s in general do have better flexability but are a bit more money. One problem with most shops is that most boards today use so little glass that there isn’t a significant difference between different polyester resins. To get a real difference try using epoxy which will give you some advantage.
The Natural Art surf shop in Buxton has epoxy in your area.
Thanks Greg, really would like to try epoxy. I do a lot of ding repair with with epoxy, but have yet to do a whole board. Heard a lot of good things about your epoxy. How can I get some? By the way, do you have to go by any enviromental codes like with polyester. Here, you have to be in a zoned area to build boards on a regular basis. Thanks
the dion/volan combo gives you a very durable, long lasting, flexible surface.
Epoxy, at least ours, is a high solids system. No environmental issues at all. Our phone number is 321-779-2369. Call us for info.
hey Greg- is there anybody on west coast using your materials/system???thanks. Matt
Clyde Beatty is our largest west coast account. There are many others.
thanks.didn’t realize clyde was doing the same thing as you.for some reason i had it in my mind you were on to the next level in the world of epoxy-something a bit more advanced than what clyde has going on.
Hey Greg, thanx for all the epoxy articles over the years ! I been playin’ with the stuff for about 18 months and the boards just get better and better. My current love interest is a Burford green-cored 6’5"x 19" x2 1/4" single concave with 4 ounce Hexcel S-cloth x 1 top and bottom using an Australian resin - ATL Composites’s post-cure super clear surfboard epoxy. You’re right - they go great, R cleaner to build and are as strong as F - and i’m only using PU foam!!! I been itchin’ to ask you this for ages - what brand of epoxy do you recommend ? Any thoughts on the UV epoxies by , for example, Star Technology ? Many thanks, JK.
