I was wondering if anyone is familiar with Wilderness shapes and Bob Duncan. How are his boards. Is Greenough still affiliated with Wilderness?
duncan is still shaping and pulling out some cool templates from the past.if you are are able to get to santa barbara go to the maritime museum and check out the greenough display-some new wilderness boards are in there, as wellas some of the most advanced surf/windsurf apparatus evere made9by greenough of course)
I saw one of Duncans Stubbies and it looked like a real fun Board.
I still see Duncan pulling off new shapes and also teaching some younger shapers how to shape the older single fin styles from the 70’s. He’s given, or others have taken, a lot of his experience w/o much of a reward. Every time I see his boards I go into a dream / thought process as to where his ideas come from. Many of the Ranch surfers, Goleta surfers, and North county surfers ride his boards. Many of these guys have boards made for particular breaks.
Bob makes modern thruster boards for his young son also. In my book, he’s one of the shaper’s w/ the deep knowledge of historical perspective like a lot of the guys here. Steve Colletta, Jim P., Yater, Spence, etc. the list goes on….
Take the time to sift through the underground to get one of Bob’s boards. BTW – he also still uses some of Greenough’s design elements. The Beach House (I was in there yesterday) has a large quiver of his boards in stock.
