Will spray paint work on a surfboard?

I just finished my surfboard and now I realized it is VERY PLAIN! I was wondering if I could use spraypaint to put a design on it(over the sanded hot coat). Will that paint come off or do I have to seal it with Acrillic sealer? Would it be better or easier to just stick with Acrillic and then seal that?

I used to do filler sprays, mainly rail stuff, top and bottom. We used plastic pinline masking tape, not paper, to mask, with crisp sharp results. Then a gloss coat over that and polish etc. They looked unreal. The paint we used was Duco auto acrylic, thinners based. That was in Oz, not sure where you are. After spraying and demasking we used prepsol to clean any glue or other crap off, otherwise the gloss pimpled where dirty. Don’t spray too thick. Have fun.

I used spraypaint on my last board, and it worked quite well, better than I had planned. I also used sharpies, watercolor pens, Crayola acryillic paint ( that stuff that comes in a bottle and you paint on) and a gloss pen. Just spray everything over with a clear coat, and it glasses the same. Also, you may want to test everything out on scrap foam before hand, to see if it soaks up the amount expected, or if the paint eats the foam, all that good stuff.

I am wonder if you can spray a FINISHED, ready to ride sanded surfboard. I am talking about an already laminated white plain blank with both hotcoats alread on AND sanded. It is a board that is and has been rideable. I’m practically asking if you can take a used board and just pray a design on it over the final sanded hotcoat. I DO NOT want to put another hotcoat on because of the weight issue- the board is a shortboard (trying to keep it light and make it colorful). Please let me know if it is possible.

sure but remove wax then sand with 320 then spray 2 coats watch paint build up for weight

Spray cans are fine on a sanded board if you apply a sealing laquer coat- this will add negligible extra weight. http://www.speedneedle.com.au

SOrry for the misunderstanding. I dont see why you cant just spraypaint it and see what happens? Sure, you can add a Krylon coat on that, but it could just stay on there anyways, you never know. If you had something not-so-extravagant planned for the board, I would just tear loose on it. Then go surf.

spray it. put clear coat over it if you want. it helps keep it from scraping off (when you remove wax) but is not necessary. i think spray paint looks best with stencils, so make some and have fun. http://groups.msn.com/thegrasshoppersurfboard/shoebox.msnw

Spray paint works fine but it is limited in what you can do. Solid panels and limited fades are fine. Use a good quality paint. Design master is the best and is available at Michaels. Krylon is a poor quality paint. Clear coat to protect your art.

Ditto what Greg said, but the most important thing you can do is lightly sand all painted area first with 220 or 320 so your art will stick good! A lady brought a board by last week with all this amazing stenciled art that was sprayed on an old shortboard, I mean hours of quality artsy stuff. She was wondering why it kept flaking off everytime they handled the board or loaded it inside the car. Because it wasn’t properly prepped/cleaned with acetone and sanded to take paint.

What about a spray paint for directly on the blank? Thanks, Ryan

Anyone tried using RUST-OLEUM American Accents Acrylic Aerosol? I was planning on spraying a stencil on the hotcoat of my poly board and putting a gloss coat on top. Thought I’d check here first to see if anyone had any experience with the rust-oleum stuff.
