Will there be a large difference in performance of a volan glass job versus a 6/6/6 gloss and polish

A nine foot longboard is what I have in mind. I love volan glass jobs, and have never ridden or owned a longboard that wasn’t glassed with volan. I am wondering how much differently the two ride, a nine footer with volan glass versus a nine footer with a standard 6 on the bottom and double six on top. I know the volan will be heavier (and look a lot better), but what about performance? I mean, will a nine footer that is really light still catch waves as easily and get as much speed as a board with volan cloth?

666 wont have as much momentum as the heavier volan board. You would find that it would be a lot lighter to surf and turn. Generally keep volan for cruising boards and lighter glass for alrounders.

Your talking about 7.5 volan 2X on the deck and 1 time on the bottom right? On a 9 foot board you are talking about like no more then half a lb. of glass weight differance. I know the volan soaks up a little more resin, so maybe you are talking about like 1 lb differance. If you make it a 2 stringer board you are talking about adding like 2 lbs. (Wood + glue and they add a lot of glue). If you go from supper blue to Classic foam you are talking about even more weight. I too like to look of volan, go for it, what is a lb or 2?

You would not notice much of a difference performance wise regardless of the cloth. I glassed a 10’ board that was shaped somewhere in between a nuetral cruiser / performance model. I glassed it with 10oz on bottom and 2 layers of 10oz on top with full double wrapped rails. I wanted to see if the characteristics in the shape came through with such a heavy glass job. The board rides extremely well and is snappy, fast and crank through some pretty powerful turns. So i say glass it with whatever the hell you feel like without worrying about losing performance because if it is a good shape then it will ride well no matter what it is glassed with. Drew

pigs ass!! they must make the volan here in Australia heavier than where you live. The way you describe it, to say that there is going to be no difference between 666 and volan, especially when it comes to modern longboarding style is wierd. go down and give two boards to a grom, one with volan and one with 6oz. The kid is not going to go out with the volan board and hit the lip because he will say its shit and too heavy.
