One other thing while we (kinda) on topic...I sometimes read another forum (not surf) where instead of banning or timeouts, they have a “jail” forum. People get stuck in there and can continue to say anything they want and members in good standing can go in to say it with them, or to make fun of them, or whatever… and some people get reformed & paroled, while others become lifers. Its not a bad system. Those in jail show status as “inmate” and those who get out permanently show “parolee” just so they don’t get too full of themselves again

Well…for the record…I appointed myself as Grand Poobah of the League of Lamaroos, because I felt the title of webmaster was way too grandiose. And even then I’m still pretty low on the food chain. There are Imperial Poobahs, Galactic Poobahs and the Supreme Poobah.
Seriously though…I’m not in favor of any ranking system based on the number of posts. Sometimes the guy that scores the most in a basketball game is simply a ball hog. It might be useful to count posts by category, but I’m not sure that’s possible. Like for example showing the number of times someone has posted in “Industry Talk.”
Any sort of ranking system that has ascending titles should be based on the number of boards someone has worked on or has caused to be made. It would be on the honor system of course. I think the number of boards is more useful info than the number of posts.
Off topic, but somewhat related…I think the members location should be mandatory. If they want to type in something fictional like Brigadoon Bay, then let them. But force them to enter something in order to register.
I like the aquatic food chain ranking system.
Can we have whales eating Japanese whalers in there as well?
Seriously though, it would be good to have a few options for the final ranking system that can then be voted upon by us.

I don’t like the idea of naming the various levels in a manner to suggest progression
or that a frequent poster is somehow better than a first timer.
The form of the current system may make frequent posters feel good about themselves,
but some of these are the people with the least knowledge anyway (with many notable exceptions)
and in contrast, if a true master of the craft were to begin to contribute why would you want to label
them with anything but the most respectful of titles.
I would prefer just to see date joined and no. of posts.
However, I would like to see members properly identified with name and location so that people are in some
small way accountable for what they say.
All the best

Note: I’m definitely open to no levels at all – I’ll have that as an option for you to vote on. However, consider this: in the next version of swaylock’s the “levels” will correlate more directly with something akin to “karma points” - (Not the term I’ll use). I haven’t worked out the system yet, but the gist of it is that people can accumulate points for doing certain things that improve their status. (again, I haven’t worked out what those things are yet but it will be things that are positive in nature, such as providing a constructive comment or good information or a popular post or quality resource records…etc.). Anyway, the more points a person accumulates the higher their level will be. This level system will be a way to symbolize how many points a community member has accumulated. So…as your coming up with ideas, realize that it should represent some sort of progressive schema.
Also – it doesn’t have to be 10 levels. It can be as few as 5 if that helps at all.
I definitely agree with the idea of points going to those who actually CONTRIBUTE something to this site, and this can be very different from the mere number of posts. The hard part is gonna be HOW to determine what a good contribution is. That’s where suggestions would be welcome, I guess.
Anyway, here’s my suggested ranking:
-
I think I really know a lot of things about surfboards building
-
I think I really know a lot of things about surfboards
-
I think I know a few things about surfboards
-
I think I don’t know that much after all

I think…
I suggested the nomination system because it allows a persons knowledge and generosity to be recognised, much the same way it is in real life.
I dont think there should be any reversal of grading because then it has a punishment factor which is a moral minefield and we all have bad days…
I suggest the mods be the ones to award points/nominations/levels, or maybe they might also allow a certain number of the most highly respected members from across the globe to suggest nominations/points as well ?
Brett.
I also like the idea of maybe showing # boards shaped/glassed… or maybe years experience.
and maybe display set categories of focus or specialty.
Categories could include:
HWS
compsand
Vac-Bagger
traditional foam/glass
fins
experimental
etc etc
you could use radio buttons in your profile to click all that apply.
We should display more info and get away from “rank based off of # of posts”
Or maybe people can rank themselves
How bout every 30 posts you take a quiz to see if you can move on. Surf history, mechanical engineering, industrial design, chemistry, form and composition, spelling, geography, oceanography…
entry level should be something like foam hacker.
top level should be:On china’s hit list.

Yeah…!!!..
Here’s my idea, something that suggests growth over time while paying homage to some materials used in the history of the craft:
Seed
Sprout
Sapling
Balsa
Redwood
Koa
Titles given by amount of time as a member and activity.

Great stuff folks.
The levels and any terms that represent them (if we choose to go that way), will be an entirely new system that doesn’t simply depend on # of posts but rather points gained/lost. It will be much closer to what Brett and some other folks are suggesting in that it will be an attempt to measure how much the person contributes to the site in a positive way. Top contributors will rise in level. Trolls, harmful, and negatively influential people will go down in level. I trust the wisdom of our community to be able to tell the difference. I’m working out the mechanics of this system now. It won’t be rolled out for quite some time however that is where things are be headed.
Thanks,
Mike
I remember a comedian once who wished:
That everyone could have a dart gun for driving, whereby if someone cuts you off or
otherwise acts like a jerk on the road, then you could shoot a rubber suction dart(or something suitable) at
his car with a little flag that says ‘Road Jerk’. The brilliance of the system was
that a cop/magistrate could pull the license of any and all said jerks after noticing a plethora of jerk violations.
Perhaps this would assist with the many of us who saw that FCS rollout thread roll down Bandini Hill,
but wanted to stay out of the fray.
Okay so when do I get my T Shirt?
I wonder, why there´s no howling in the woods with this threat to hard earned glory of veteranism and the like…
and surely this is not the place for a user to show up -------------------- but the shirt looks cool.
Since there have been mentioned some humane thoughts on the strange odor of categories with implicit rankings, and the cheesiness of labelling first appearing gurus on the forum inappropriately, my suggestion is something more neutral. Imagine a nice place, and what you could be there:
-
Visitor
-
Guest
-
Regular
-
Live stock
-
Rolling stock
-
Equipment
-
Leaser
-
Maintenant
-
Laird
-

If I have not messed up any of the words, it will be due to extreme luck, as this isn´t my motherlanguage…
For the proceeding in the list above, I suggest to take the number of replies received to a post, instead of the posts themselves. This is still very simple, nonarbitrary and might encourage a habit of ignoring over fighting…
For example 10 replies to your posts could get you from visitor to guest, 30 to regular etc.
Remains the question of current titles and their proper translation - maybe there should be a simple quota between posts so far, and whatever new there will be.
Cheers - D.
…Mike,
I hope that one thing does not change
that s the template; I mean, for ex the gamers forums or other surf forums have very bad ones
ugly to see and with many distracting stuff
–for me is not the same some guy that only post a comment like “yeah” or “good”, etc
than a helpfull one or threads that function like chat s
–and lot of folks are here from day one or almost, like me
anchovy
sardine
perch
stiper
cudda
coho
bluefish
dorado
wahoo
bluefin
sailfish
tarpon
mako
marlin
