Mike: I don’t have an issue with the current user levels. If you are in the process of making changes, then I would like to add a suggestion. I would love to see RSS added to the site. Thanks…
Also, a markup tag to place youtube/flash videos into the body of a post would be killer. Thanks

I’m looking forward to some changes in the way people are rated. I like Surfoils in post#15 where members could nominate other members to move up levels. I don’t think the quantity of the post is important. It is the quality. A member should not be able to move up to “Barnacle” with 800 three word posts.
Here is an idea for evaluating contributors. If you see a post the you find helpful then you check that persons post as one of your favorites. If you are a newbie and you give a post a check then that is worth one vote. If you have a higher ranking, then your check is worth 10, 50, or even 100 votes depending on your rank. Basically, this is saying that the opinion of a seasoned poster is worth more than that of a newbie. If you get a certain threshold of votes then you are promoted to the next level.

I agree with that. Sounds clever.
(BTW, if you want me to vote for your posts, send checks or money orders to: Balsa, France…)
Best idea I’ve heard so far.

I’d suggest that its one man, one vote. I like being equal to all men unless some are more equal.
e.g. A newbie could assist many people thru PM’s, emails or local contact but not get as much acknowledgement as someone who impressed a veteran and scored big points for a single action.
Brett.
how about planer levels?
1: sandpaper
2: surform
3: bosch electric
4: hitachi modified
5: skil 100
Do it the old fashion way.Take bribes.
Swied’s idea sounds good. Or why not go on hours spent on swaylocks? Although that doesn’t necessarily mean that just cause they spend lots of time on it that they know much. But…

I thought the old fashion way was to flip your surfer cards against a wall and whoever’s landed face up got 'em both.
Mike,
Forget the rating system, just beef up the Profiles a bit. If a newbie wants to know something about a poster, they key their name and presto, everything you want to know is right there. If someone wants to be mysteriously anonymous, fine, they just won’t carry much heft to the discussion.
Addition by subtraction…
Just reverse them to mess with the new people and the people who have not been on for awhile
0=>Carp
15=>Master
50=>Coelacanth (I don’t know what that is anyway)
100=>Veteran
200=>Barnacle
400=>Addict
800=>Enthusiast
1600=>Member (lamest)
3200=>Journeyman (coolest sounding)
6000=>User
7400=>Newbie
Or
Sandshark
Thresher shark
blue shark
whitetip shark
hammerhead shark
mako shark
bull shark
tigershark
White shark (white pointer or blue pointer)
Megladon
Just noticed that on compsand.com they have a HOOT / BURN ‘Stoke-a-meter’ under the persons avatar where you can add or subtract.
Segway Forums have a similar system too.
Brett.
EDIT: any chance of getting the page width set so that over-typing doesnt result in really w-i-d-e pages that cause a bit of angst please ?
Its a real pain in the ass.
Aw man, I’ve been on sways for 4 yrs and was just about to make barnacle, o well.
I like swieds idea, I like the idea of points, I like the idea of being able to leave positive or negative feedback.
I like the idea of including factors other than the number of posts.
Swied,
Great idea. Well, no surprise considering your background. The current system is based purely on the number of posts. Your suggestion places greater emphasis on quality over quantity which is good.
One drawback is that it’s dependent upon votes to qualify a post. There’s a good chance that some good posts will get little or few votes. One modification might be to value a post then apply a factor for ratings. Example: A post is worth 10. An endosement by a newbie makes it worth 11. An endorsement by a superstar makes it worth 20. Ranking is still significantly effected by endorsement but not entirely dependent.
Of course lurkers would not have the option to endorse.
I originally thought a post rating might be useful. Like rate the value of this post 1 thru 5 with radio buttons for each number. That’s probably more than is needed. A simple “Is this a good post?” with a button should suffice.
It’s not perfect. It can turn the ratings into more of a popularity contest but it does allow for value based on quality.
hodad - 1-50
pseudo - 51-100
gremmie - 101-200
kook - 201-300
surfer - 301 - 999
stylist - 1000+
I like the idea of a variable rating that changes as you go and as others judge you and your topics and or postings.
the reason this is a good thing is that we all have our ups and downs, sometimes we are on the spot and other time we blow a gasket (like me)
anyway I think it would be fun to do
and definetly fix the expanding page thing, that is a pain
Shouldn’t that be chipfish off the ol’ block ?
