Window Film

I was just watching some guys replacing the film on windows in the building I work in. This plastic film has uv protection and prevents the glass from breaking in extreme conditions such as cyclones rocks etc.

Has anyone tried this? It seems that you could possibly use lighter glass/amounts of resin etc to lose some weight. Would almost eliminate glossing because of it’s finish.

This stuff also flexes. I’ve heard of it holding a 6’ x 4’ window pane in place during a Cat 5 cyclone and it bowed 2" without breaking.

Just a thought

Hicksy,

I thought about that back in the mid 90’s. I mentioned this to my brother who lives in Miami and he said that after hurricane Andrew there were ads on TV for window film and showed guys hitting the window with a hammer.

I talked to 3M. And I talked to guys in the industry making large decals from Slap On to Lost’s Drew Brophy just to see if anyone was interested in doing art. I could find no interest in it as a product either with or without art.

One company, XM, has a deck film, but it is not structural.

I think maybe it’s an idea that’s ahead of it’s time or will never have a time. Either way it’s probably not a good investment.

One problem with the window film I’m familiar with is that the film is attached with water.

If you decide to try it let me know how it goes.
