Wingnut Cutaway fin

Anybody have experience with this fin. Good longboarding fin? Any opinions would be appreciated…

1987 i started to experiment with surfing on a longboard after getting board of 25 years of short boards, while i was riding longboards for the next 2 years i started studying up on keels on boats and decided to cut my longboard fin like a keel on a boat. i loved how it rode, loose but had length so it wouldn’t skip out. i approached a local fin company (no names) and showed them this idea, he was very excited that the california company might buy my idea. at that time there was nothing like a cut-a-way fin on the main market. the california company said it wouldn’t work, and shot the idea down… the next year that company came out with the wing nut cut-a-way model. upset doesn’t begin to say how i was feeling! but i’ve been riding and will only use a cut-a-way fin on mt longboards.

Puleeese. Dave Sweet did some cutaways back in the mid 60’s. So did the Greek. The wingnut is a refinement of the old squirrel fin circa late 60’s.

the wingnut is a great fin.

John, Nice to see you here. I remember your fins at the time. A bit different from what came before and more similar to what’s come since.

in response to cuda…thanks for schooling me, i didn’t know that. i’m not much on the longboard history or longboard fin history so i was just going on what i’ve experienced…my bad. i’ll try to do more historical research next time as not to offend the more experienced ones. i claim no knowledge on longboard history as you can tell cuda… i just like to bust airs on them…

I had one of the Wingnut cut-aways and ended up selling it to a friend. I made the mistake of buying a 7" to slap on my 9’4" single fin noserider. It didn’t hold to well, obviously. Ironically, the guy I sold it to put it in his 7’6" egg. The board is set up for a 2+1 but he’s been riding it as a single fin and totally digs it. I would think it would lack some serious drive because the base of the fin is pretty narrow, but it does pivot of the tail alot easier than the deep rake fin he had on it originally. He took it to Cali in November I believe. Surfed pretty big Rincon with that cutaway fin and had a freakin’ blast. That mans name was “Wombat”…

I was riding one 9" I think. I found it on the beach. Used it on my 10 foot Eaton Bonzer, worked great. My son lost it one day, the fin just fell out did not hit anything it just fell out. I guess it just wanted to go back to where I found it. I miss that fin. I just may have to buy another one. But I hate the man. So I will not buy anything with his name on it.

bagman, make your own its not extremely difficult and the cost is around 20 bucks or less depending on your prices. austin

Good idea, thinks I just may do that for this winder. I only ride my Bonzer with it get real big and I want something fast, when that happens the Eaton Bonzer is the call.

john , whats your fin setup on longboards, when its overhead at places like S inlet etc…, i know you would have insight on this . thx
