Wings, Fashion or Function.

What do you guys think? Do wings really do much? I have had some great boards in the past that had them, but wonder if they would’ve been the same with out wings. Cheers, Scott W.

Wings are a design feature which allow the shaper to carry a wider fuller template back to the tail and then reduce that template volume quickly into the tail. Quite often you will find wings on swallow tailed boards. Both features compliment each other in that they allow for more volume just up to the forward area of the tail and then quickly getting rid of that volume. They are good for quick steep little waves that you want the ability to stomp, pivot and/or stall the tail to stay in the pocket. Tom@daum

Scott…Tom, from the previous response, put it PERFECTLY! Wings DEFINITELY perform a specific function - when applied correctly. If you break the outline of your board in any way, it will change the way a board performs (sometimes VERY radically). The wings allow you to make tight positional readjustments when in a small to medium “reefy” wave (one of the ways I can describe it).

How do I determine where to put them on my board? Should they be where I would could turn off them (does that make sence?). I want to build a mid length fun shape that can handle some medium to powerfull surf in the 3’ to 6’ range. I was thinking of a round pin with a full nose and a little thin in the foil for a fun shape in the mid 7’s. Thanks for your help, Scott W.

From the winged boards I’ve seen pictured from various makers, there’s not a consensus on where to put wings. I like the idea of placing wings adjacent to the rear edges of the thruster fins. Because of toe-in and cant, thrusters pressurize water as they throw it up toward the board’s bottom, and out under the rails. Placing wings in these thruster dump areas raises the rails’ lift in trimming and planing turns. This placement also creates low pressure areas behind the wings which lowers resistance to rear-weighting. The thruster area becomes a pitch pivot between rail surfing and tail surfing. I just spend so much time on the rails that wings don’t do much for me.

This board will be a 2+1 set up, but I"m guessing the wings would still work like you said even with the smaller side fins.
