Nope Thats my dog Hank. He go’s just about everywhere I go. we are two peas in a pod.
you let him drive ?
oh wait …it’s america , the steering wheel’s on the wrong side of the car …
ben
cool dog …does he surf ?
Yeah John Holly, also one of the original fish shaper guys out of OB/Sunset Cliffs, Ex G+S shaper w/Skip Frye…You could write a book about that neighborhood, the good and the bad, much surfing culture and good waves, the last hippie beach in San Diego!!!
I had John shape me this board for bigger days at Sunset Cliffs.
Wow, color AND a leash plug for Sunset Cliffs. I surfed ‘Newbs’ ten years ago with a leashless [leashplug -less] board that only had a touch of color and almost got beat up at the rope climb out for having a too colorful board. Maybe it had to do more with not being a local? And I thought Philadelphia WAS local to Point Loma How times have changed.
Nice board.
I don’t know what to say gunkie. I guess you weren’t riding a John Holly board. seemed there were lots of wacked out crackheads that surfed the Cliffs back then…
I live in north county now and I do not miss the scene down there at all, the winter waves yes…
Absolutely! we have to deal with Keith Melville…see it’s still the same as it ever was!
Watch it Jay or we’ll sic Terry on you:
That John Holly brings back funny memories. My first custom board was a Holly egg. Ordered it from the Greenroom on Newport Blvd. I think it’s a bank now. Anyway, my grandfather gave me 100 bucks to get a haircut. He was career navy. The chicks were starting to like it shorter so I was gonna cut it anyway. Got the cut and took that 100 bucks plus fifteen more and ordered my board. Loved the board, too. Worked great at the jetty. Used to have a challenger, too. Mike
Keith, so I guess that surf spot is now called Tarradactyl Sh!*s… those dang Tarradactyl’s were always a big problem down there…
Shhh! No naming spots!
Yeah, ever since the big radioactive sewage leaks, the pterys have been a problem… that and the three eyed sharks…
Hi Ben, here’s one I never showed you, made around 1990, which might qualify in the “things” category rather than the “wings, stings, flyers”. By the way, the girl is my daughter, Gabrielle, who was 2 or 3 years old then…
…and now:
Oh yes, my boards are getting better, too, but not as fast…
thanks Bill !
is that really the tail …it’s not buried in sand ?
do you still have that board , or do you remember how it rode ?
cheers mate !
ben
is that really the tail
No, you’re right, it was buried in the sand, (pintail, as usual…).
I can’t tell you anything else about that board. (I didn’t even remember that I had done it untill I found this old photo…) Must have been sold to someone… Poor guy…
