Winterburn longboard

I have a surfboard shaped by Mike Winterburn and I was just wondering if any one has any information about it. The logo is winterburn surf boards made with love. A local surf shop dated it at 1962 or before. It has an interesting step in the deck. I was wondering if this would be a desirable surfboard for collectors and if it has any value.

That local surf shop doesn’t have a clue. Without seeing more photos, especially the fin, it is hard to narrow down the age. But, judging by the logo alone I’d say 1967 or '68. It has all the trappings of the “flower power” era. Mike Winterburn was from Santa Cruz. Most likely where that board was made.

Take photos of the fin. Is it a box fin, or glassed on?

As to value… Not likely worth much. Maybe to a person who owned one in the Sixties? Your photos do little to aid in assessing condition.

An obscure thing called a “Google search” revealed a connection between Winterburn and Johnny Rice. He and Rice were friends way back when in Santa Cruz. Since Rice is back in SC, and he has a website, you might try to contact Johnny and he may be able to tell you more about Winterburn.

Mike Winterburn shaped for Jack O’Neill in the midsixties before he started to make boards in his garage.  He and Johnny Rice were go friends and can probably help with when the board was made. As I recall Mike did not make board for very long. Last time I heard anything about him he was living in the Pacific Northwest.
