Ok almost finish my mini simms ,but working under the sun for the first time i notice that the wood tail block begin to delam I used cedar the thin plank you can use in the BBQ to give taste to your steak ...you know!!! there is no oil involve no varnish...I will take the glass off but what can I doto the wood to laminate forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What is the line below the fin box, right after the red pinline? Looks like a glass haircrack for me. Isn’t it some kind of “stress delamination”?
If you’re going to re-glass it, put a cheater coat first, so the wood impregnates well, then glass as usual. Also, glassing while the temperature is dropping will help the wood to absorb resin, and making an strong bond.
Hope that makes sense…

The black line is a resin tint pin line , it will be cover with the red ...but what is a cheater coat
Any other idea
Hey Man, Cedar has resin in it, some species have a high sap/resin content especially Incense or Port Orford cedar. Before laminating, the wood needs to be sealed with a sanding sealer or shellac, or even a water based urethane. Seal the wood and lightly sand, then laminate.
Ok good ! ...now I know!
With wood project I use a sanding sealer.
With boards we do a paste with resin and squeegee it smooth then light sand before lamination
The resin paste acts as a sanding sealer.
We have a 55 gallon drum in the shop so that's what we use and it's fast easy and it works.
So according to what I learned from you guys I ll use this stuff,... let it dry ...light sand ...resin ...light sanding let it dry...and laminate with the clothe and resin...RIGHT? Thanks again.
That's a Roger CanadianSurfer. Test on a srap piece first. Never seen that brand or "white" shellac. Usually it trends towards all shades of amber. If you are using epoxy resin, then just thin out some with iso-alcohol and seal with that.
Listen to tblank he knows alot about wood.
"White Shellac" aka "Pigmented shellac?
