.hi , finally got to the stage were my project needs some fins, decided to use some wooden keels i hand made, ive hotcoated my board and tacked on the keels with some lam resin. My mate showed me how to glass on fins, just need a few tips. How many rovings per side of fin? will be using uv resin. What oz of glass to lay up to , 6 or 4oz.
I use about a pencils width of rovings each side - when its bunched up - not loose - I tape the end together with masking tape - so I’ve got sort of a ‘horsetail’. Dip in your bucket, make sure she’s all wet and gone clear, then lay along base of fin and trim to length with scissors. Do this both sides of your fin. I then use 3 layers (full patch to cover the whole fin and about 3" out onto the board) of 4oz each side. When cured apply hotcoat and start your sanding.
Cheers
Rich
Check out the video on glassing on fins on Greenlights website. Shows how to do it.

Generally 8 strands of woven roving per side on each fin for a keel fin. If it’s a retro style fish then I’m guessing that you used 6oz to glass it? If so, then go with two layers on each side. You can do full layers, or one half patch and then a full patch over it to adjust the flex of the fin. Glass on fins are cool. Post some pics so we can see the fins and the board.
