About to airbrush a new board and was wondering if anyone knew how to achieve a fake wood or woodgrain effect with fluid acrylic? I saw someone do it old school with a cheese cloth but forgot the exact way to do it. Were they using two different colors one base and one for grain once the cloth is applied? Thanks for any help you can give.
Theres a hand tool you can buy at Michaels that will give you a faux wood look. I’ve seen it done and it can be very real looking. Ask someone there and they should know where to look in the store.
There was a thread a long time back on this, but I’m a little too lazy to look it up right now. But it had to do with a balsa board thread that somehow got sidetracked and on the topic of painted on grain look. It should be under a thread on Balsa boards, or else maybe under a painting Balsa woodgrain. I might check it later if I have time. Otherwise the Archives are your best friend.
Cheers! I did a search for balsa wood paint effect, wood paint effect, balsa wood paint but didn’t see anything useful in the archives. No big deal, I will go talk with the guys over at Pearl here in L.A. I am doing a Blackbeard themed twin and wanted to do it in black but all of my logos and artwork won’t print well in white so i decided to go for a wood look. I plan on doing a lot of samples and experiments with the paint before I ruin my board so I will let you know what I figure out. Thanks for the advise.

Check these out, and otherwise, if ‘Carl Ackerman’ is in a generous mood and he still posts around here, he might be able to help you out. Try these threads, and if still in doubt, PM some of the guys with experience in this stuff. Ask nicely, and most of those who posted on this subject will likely help you out. They have certainly been generous with their knowledge around here before…
‘Falsa’ was the term I was trying to remember. It was one of those things at the tip of your tongue and all, but just not there yet. Hope this helps…
Howzit Lowery, For the cheese cloth technique you spray the board light brown, let it dry then lay the cheese cloth over the blank and pull it length wise so the cheese cloth holes are stretched longer than wide. Next spray some dark brown over some of the light brown and then do the same with some black and after it drys pull the cheese cloth. Aloha,Kokua
man thats so clever…i love it!
thanks
Howzit meecrafty, I actually saw the process on Monster Garage, The painter on the program said it was an old trick his dad used for wood grain effects. Aloha,Kokua
John Carper video Airbrushing 101 has a section on how to spray fake balsa wood. “Falsa”
