Yater Baby Spoon Question

Howdy y’all,

I recently saw a 8’0" Yater Baby Spoon and really dug it.

Dimensions: 8’0", 22.5" wide, 2 7/8 thick.

What is the philosophy behind it?

Here’s the deal: I’m 6’0", 220 lbs, a logger looking for a smaller single fin for clean chest-head days, and something a girlfriend can use.

Will I struggle with it?

Any thoughts?

Thanks & all the best,

JH

a few years ago when yater started making those baby spoons, i rode a new one at malibu…neat looking board for sure, but it was kind of a slug.too much rocker i reckon.thing is i really dug the board and wanted it to work , but for me it didn’t.don’t know if the newer ones are any different/better than that early one i rode…

I’ll take a stab at this one. Guessing here, but I’d bet that the first small one was made for a kid or small person. Next guess, that they fit better in someone’s house to look at.

Howzit E-Pacman, What year did Yater start making the shorter versions of the spoon. I have one that’s a 8’3" and it has the #25 on itand I think it was made in 75’. Must say it was one heck of a magic board and have kept it for sentamental reasons even though it looks pretty bad. It was 1 of 3 that came to Kauai and the one I have was originally owned by Ambrose. He sold it to another guy in Hanalei and the guy didn’t like it so he sold it to me for $65. The board would work in just about any size up to 8ft Hanalei and big Middles. Aloha,Kokua

these are newer -90s sometime.every one i’ve seen is 8 foot. don’t know if the baby spoon comes in any other length…i’ll take a full size spoon anyday for sure!

i have a 9’2" spoon, saw a 8’6" in the shop this fall almost went for it , but the shop longboard guy said that someone who had gotten one had returned it , being unimpressed. So i went to m¥ local shaper and ordered an 8’2" five fin bonzer instead—result, i am very happy

The Baby Spoon comes in 8’0" and 8’6". I have the 8’0, and love it. It works superbly in clean, waist to head high point surf. I use an 8.5" Greenough Stage 4 fin on it. Lots of ‘twang’.

I don’t see where a person could think it’s got too much rocker, as Yater’s own description states it has less rocker than a typical modern ‘performance’ longboard. If anything, the rails might be an issue for someone who’s used to a more modern profile. Yater describes it as “soft, turned-up elliptical rail”.

At 220 lbs,you should definitely go with the 8’6". I’m around 150, and the 8’0 seems just about right. I can even knee paddle it. Too bad you weren’t ‘on’ it when they first came along. Price has gone up about 1/3 since then. As I recall, the base price on mine was around $780. Fall of '02. Good luck finding one for that kind of money, now.

the boards i typically surf have really flat rocker thus the baby spoon , which has more rocker than i am used to, felt slow compared to what i am used to. at malibu no less where i was sure it would go off…however, to folks who don’t ride the flat rocker boards like i do, the baby spoon may very well be a blast to ride…

Not sure what you mean by that. Every Spoon I’ve seen had a square tail.

The tail on mine looks like this:

Hi Matt - As you know, I think at the time of the Baby Spoon Idea, Renny would make you or anyone what ever you wanted. In those days, he’d build just about anything (with in reason) as long as it was part of his program.

To me, I see that he is still busy, but might be slowing the process down a notch. Doing his art is more fun these days.

Better get them while you can.

Howzit Sammy,A hot curl shaped tail more or less looks like a normal tail turned upside down. There is more curve up than down with no hardness.Aloha,Kokua
