Yater Spoon with backwards logo

Bought this 9’10" Yater on craigslist. The logo on top is backwards or mirrored. Trying to find something similar online to ID the year or where it was made. Thanks

What does it say below the leash string? Looks like a Surftech, but maybe an off brand or a test shape/ prototype?

surftech

Ok so then its definitely a Surftech board. Made in Thailand. I would guess late 90’s based on the Surftech font?

Looks like the first iteration of wood tech boards, no glass on the outside, the only glass was between the wood & the foam. But they usually had a lot of spider web cracking, this one looks remarkably clean. There is a lot of info in the archives on these early wood veneer surf techs.

I repaired a couple of these in the past few years, in both cases I ended up glassing with 4 oz cloth & epoxy resin. One I sold, the other I still have.

why not just contact Surftech?

Hey Walt,

Thank you for reaching out! I hope you’re having a great week so far.

This board looks badass! Would love to ride that thing. Should be pretty fun, let me know how it rides.

I’m guessing the logo is just a “misprint”, but I am not too sure. Looks like you snagged a unique one man!

Enjoy!!

It’s from 1996 I have the same board that I bought brand new from Brad at Lightning Bolt. It’s my daily driver and gets lots of use. mine is serial number 60 so we are only 25 apart.

awesome, they are only 25 apart, wow
does yours have the backwards logo?

is that a surftech-machine-loading-mistake-thing in Thailand, or someone did that for a customer ?

No regular logo I think it’s a mistake on yours. Do you have long cracks in the bottom yet? Mine got them after the first five years. I think they were expansion cracks as the board heated up. My board and other Surftech’s I saw came with a poly gloss coat over the wood that would crack over time. I sanded mine down and added an epoxy coat figuring the epoxy has more flex vs. the poly gloss resin.

One question for you how much does yours weigh? My board like my body has gotten heavier over the years. In the boards case some very small pin holes managed to suck lots of water before I caught them.

For me it was just sucking down the beers.

This is why I glassed mine with 4 oz & epoxy. I also added a fabric inlay to cover some of the cracks in the finish.
