http://www.canada.com/theprovince/story.html?id=6474783c-06b9-4671-9520-4b0a88447336 this is what we have to deal with up here in canada. this happened not far from a well known surf spot with a long half hour hike through the dense woods. iam thinkin of carying bear mace or a surfboard with bear mace built in.
hey id rather it be bears at least you can see them coming and react
CRIKEY !!!
We’ve only got Sharks, Sea snakes,Stone fish, Crocodiles and Box Jellyfish to worry about in the water. Oh , and if your unlucky Stingrays can get you too.
Cheers
Mooneemick
Dang… We’ve got some down here, but I’ve always heard they are fine unless you get between mom and cubs… That bear sounded crazy! Guess I’ll be a little more aware if I think I see/hear one…
Thanks for the heads up -
The scariest are the box jellies and the very scary Irukandji. I’m glad I don’t have to consider running into any of those.
Ha Isn’t that some shit its like the third one in a month here on the island. I had a mom and two cubs on my bedroom porch 4 days ago. I didn’t read you link but I guess its the one in port renfrew, they are idoits they throw all there fish bits acroos the water to the other side of the creek so since there aren’t any more fish end of tourist season, the bears said this is easy. We need to be more responsible about effecting there eating habits, trash is the biggest killer.
I would take a black bear over a shark but not a grizzly!
ya its been happening way to much this year. and its just foolish people leaving out garbage. ive also heard the salmon returning to spawn is way down. so maybe the bears a looking for something else to eat
I’ll take my chances with sharks, and all the other deadlies here in oz over a bloody bear anyday!!!. Faaaark that mate!! Too big too fast too strong.
Maybe you can shape a board with a shotgun barrel coming out the nose. Just put a trigger on the centre fin, obviously a safety catch would be necessary, it would just be plain stupid without one!!
Would be handy when your fave break got crowded too!!
We got sharks and bears.
I bought some bear pepper spray when I took the kids on a surf camping trip this summer.
A ranger said that some campers left a 2lb block of cheese in the river to keep it cool.
The poor bear swiped it and ate the whole 2 lb block, must have stopped it up pretty good.
One year a sick seal came up on shore by our tents. My friend wanted to sleep out by it to keep it company.
It was cold so he went back inside his tent. The next morning their was a big bloody bear trail going from
the beach to back up into the woods.
Ah yes. Being your neighbor in WA state on the Olympic Peninsula we got those black bears too. And as for seeing a shark coming… well we got cougars in those dense woods too and you just hope to spot those first!
Making a trip up your way early November. I haven’t been in years… gonna visit Tofino and Jordan river.
Tyson
cool . iwas just down in westport on the weekend . not sure when last you were up this way. but the crowds around jordan are getting insane. still lots of secret spots if you know were to go and dont mind a hike. pm me when your here and i may show you a few. p.n.w. surfers unite!
Bears? Sharks? Crocs? Well we dont’ got bears, but sharks and crocs we do…However BEES? you got Bees?
i got harassed once out in the lineup by a lone fricken honeybee, which are all african here by the way. This guy (the bee) was alone, about 250 yards offshore at this reef i was surfing on a small day. That sucker was all over me… i’m trying to paddle here and there, and it’s just buzzing my ears, eyes and nose. i even try to catch a little wave inside to outrun it … ducking under water… people are watching me flailing, and don’t realize its a bee.
Finally i got a decent size wave ( head high ), and managed to outrun it… caught the wave in, headed for the beach and split.
Chased out of the water … by a bee.
oh yes.
Wow, 4 guys, 2 victims…2 gaffs, 1 hammer, and a fillet knife. Is that a youtube or what! How did they all fit in the guys boat without sinking it?
A shotgun won’t faze a bear, there skull is too thick. When I was in Alaska We carried 44 mag. or desert eagle and it would still take 6 to 8 shots if a pissed off bear came at you, I never needed it. I fuckin get harrassed by bees every day on the island, LITTLE BASTARDS!
Listen Girvin, you need to man up and carry a few gaffs!! Forget the 44 mag. or even the 454 mag. Gaff & fillet knife is all you need…obviously
We’ve got bears in San Francisco. You may not want to be attacked by one.

The mullet are thick off the Central Florida coast right now. Mullet’s, greenies, glass minnows… This leads to other, larger, more toothy fishes looking for a meal.
On the coming fall schedule, a front is predicted to stall just North of us and blow onshore for the next four to five days which will enforce the mullet run and bring every remaining toothy fish and its brother into the shoreline to feed. You can bet we will have a bunch of bites in the next few weeks.
