Zip Snip electric "scissors"

I am kind of a tool geek, so bought these on a whim last time I was at Lowes.

https://www.zipsnipcutter.com/

Dressed a couple of dozen boards with them already and they work great…even 22 oz triax cuts like butter. Battery life is pretty good, too.

Rob

Whats up Rob?

Were they in Lowes Home Improvement?  What department?

Dave

Hey Dave,
Haven’t seen you in a while…let me know next time you’re down our way.
Yes Lowes Home Improvement…in the power tool section.
Skil makes almost the same thing, but this model has a more user friendly trigger.

Rob

those look pretty heavy duty for just cutting glass… (ok to use on chicken wire?) but whatever works!  How much did they cost, I might just have to get one?

I have the skill version and have been useing them in my shop for about 3 years now. Use them for glass cloth , plastic, fabric, tyvek, canvase, what ever. good tool !

Have been using Dritz and/or Black and Decker electric scissors for well over fifteen years.  The Zipsnip and Skil look good.  The rotary blade and self-sharpening aspect are a plus.  Keep them on the charger when not in use.  Go a few months without charging and the battery life will be short.  But they can be used as a plug in.  String free  laps.  Don't forget how to use a pair of Wiss though.

Mahalo RobW,

The battery on my EC cutter  http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/show_product.do?pid=2286&engine=adwords!6456&keyword=ec_cutter is dying and this looks like it might be a better tool.

Hey Keith, they cost around $35 at Lowes. Haven’t tried them on chicken wire, but about the only thing they haven’t cut well around the glass shop is really fine peel ply (unless you stretch it tight when cutting).

Thanks to Wood Ogre for letting us know that this tool can hang around for a few years. It seems fairly well built so I was wondering how it would hold up.

Rob

PS I thought we were only supposed to use our first names at the TJA meetings.

Ha.  Maybe we should start a new web site, TJA.com for all the tool junkies… (speaking of which, where IS Doc anyways?)

Last month’s sins:  16" scroll saw ($30 used at swap meet); porter cable worm drive jig saw ($30 brand new with case, at swap meet, ha ha!!), blades for Skil 676 planer (no comment), makita chain saw ($20 used at swap meet)… EGAD I have a problem don’t I?

Wow, looks good.  If this thing can be used to cut 1mm PVC sheets, I am buying one.  That is what I use to make my templates.

Thanks,

D

Thanks for the info on the cutters guys,I’ve been looking for some pvc template material with no luck.I’d be stoked to find a 12" wide role over 10’ in length.

For PVC scraps go to your local sign maker. They have lots of plastic left over from jobs. Or you can try Harbor Sales. They have all kinds.

Is there a plastic supplier in your area?  That is where I get my 1mm PVC sheets.  We have a store, Plastics Hawaii in Honolulu that I get my PVC sheets and plexiglass from.

You haven't lived until you see Keith use that chain saw instead of sanding screen on his rails...

I just found one of these at Ace hardware, now I need to shape a board so I can test it out.
