That’s o.k. in time everyone else will catch up =-)
only if you are trying to sell them.
Bill, It seemed to me that your original intent was for us to make the case for why you should tell us about this material. My case is that I would appreciate the info and use it and share it as you desire. I am always searching to make the lightest most durable boards that I can. Regards Dave
nah mate as i have told you fused wood fibre is where i am at’'– and the cosmetic requirments have been dealt with years ago
with the aus dollar way down you may like my epoxy finshttp://4.bp.blogspot.com/-62aIA_NWkMA/VMAs785J8nI/AAAAAAAABPk/Na7c50yjqeg/s1600/DSC02736.JPG
well that explains a whole lot.
Makes me think of when I was working for this Italian company building fiberglass Minesweepers for the US Navy. Awesome boats.
They had some glass from Soviet Union that would not unravel. No strings. It was all about how they wove it. Glass looked like normal 6 ounce. I tried like hell to find out where I could get some. No luck…
I realize this is off subject but thats not unusual for me.
well that explains a whole lot.
If you want one that badly Huie, make me an offer. =-b
I’d like to echo pirate agenda’s comment earlier…in a month we will be but a few streets from each other when I move to my new house. We’d love some to play with bill and it would most definitely be bagged under epoxy…hope you are well. Rich ps did you get my last email???
Yes…
I’m done with Vac Bag… I’m done with any High Tech sort of Surfboard build…I’m not done with High tech…Just done with all this Vac Bag sort of High tech BS Surfboard stuff.
You guys are lost. Gosh Bill, you went High Tech back in 68. Good for you…When did Vac bag get invented? It’s great for race cars and Space ships…total BS thread…keep up the good work.

…When did Vac bag get invented?..
I was first exposed to it, in 1959 (fresh out of high school), when I went to work @ Convair General Dynamics, in the plastics department. We worked with pre-preg’s, epoxys, phenolics, cold set and heat set resins. Not the kind of things you’d use on surfboards, at that time. Most likely vac bag came about in the late 40’s, or very early 50’s.
Hi Bill,
Enjoying your thread
Eating lunch at my deak and just wanted to say the EVF vac bagged broomtail you made me is the strongest damn thing I have ever seen, was out surfing near the pier and going right, into the pier, and got a little overly aggressive and literally ended up attempting to shoot the pier and had to bail the board in the center of the pier and the board caught one of the pilings on its rail and all there is is a small indentation, I sanded it with very fine sandpaper this past weekend just to make it smooth to the touch but it is completely cosmetic, did not break the galss, and that board smacked the piling hard
I was actually really bummed about it and had some sort of psychological denial about it and would not really look at the damage, just got out of hte water and switched boards then this past weekend took the wax off and really gave it a once over… beyond needing to maybe spray white paint(?) to cover up this little blemish after sanding it, it really was nothing… completely amazed really
Lankameese, I have the same glassing schedule, and white finish coat that you do, on my most recent 7’ 10’’ personal board. I too am impressed by the strength of such an otherwise light glass job. I tried the ‘‘thumb test’’, and hurt my thumb. I’m glad to hear that you’re still getting some miles out of the BroomTail.
hi Bill
i spotted this knitted net, spotted tit knocker backer on a work site and grabbed a few meters
i believe its made of nylon
it is very strong. you could de-capitate a jet skier with a strand, by stretching it across a harbour entrance
it is strong enough to catch jaws
it could be used to change the trajectory of 1950DA

The silk produced by Darwins bark spider is almost 10 times tougher than kevlar…weight for weight , it is stronger than steel …so what do scientists do ?..they try to make a machine , by copying the arse end of a spider…(lol)…so far , they haven’t even come close.
If you like hammer tests, then you’ll like mine. I use the pointy end
EPS test sample
what the eff is that stuff! sounds like metal when you hit it!
…in my opinion for all these fibers (and in consequence to have a really new design) the main problem still remains in the core material that we have mostly: PU and PS…
Yes, exactly, the best fibre in the world put on a core with an inconsistent density through the core ( softer closer to the centre ) is a bit silly.
Plain old fibreglass over a core with a more consistent density works better. I am way biased though ![]()
well i think average surfers need to be aware of there limitations . come to terms with the fact they will never surf at pro level and thus do not require formula1 super light equipment and chuck on a few layers of 6 ounce. just a switch to epoxy and eps give you an extra layer of 6 oz without much weight added. i would happily glass my own shortboards with 10 oz volan
sensible advice and a reality check .
Thanks , Paul.
maybe people will take more notice when you are not posting as 'Silly ', eh ? [ it worked for sirwanksalot , when he renamed :) ]
