some of the paipo guys do a rub on oil/wax combo, I think Wegener has one for his boards. there should be plenty available on the net.
More experimenting wit vacbagging handplanes, refining, doing things that havent been done before.
2 canted 12" keel fins with minimal planing area between. Fins are 3mm thick, no foil, just straight line speed and grip. The width is drawn in to keep the fins under your hand.
Triple carbon and veneer handplane.
Thickness 1.8 mm.
Weight 105 grams.
The Vernier Callipers are my favourite from 1979.
Man,
This is evolving so fast i cant keep up !!!.. So:
a) Is this as quick as the first?
b) How long does it take you to do one of these?..
c) Did you vac back cardboard as the core? or is that just veneer and carbon/Kevlar, no core?
Really very innovative. As someone else said on here " really out of the box" thinking…and i thought the surfmat thread was great!!!..
keep it coming

Your earlier design gave me an idea for something “similar” to your latest model. I was thinking something with wings at a 45-degree angle to the hand-hold flat/horizontal portion. Wide at top, narrower at bottom (horizonatal dimension). Narrow at front, wider at back (vertical dimension)
Nice innovation Brett.
Sparxs, faster across the wave becuase there’s the 2 vertical fins giving it drive and direction.
About 2-3 hours to make if they’re copies.
It’s just a foam mold, then vac 3 layers of carbon and veneer. Strong enough that you can stand on them.
This latest version definately holds and drives across a wave better than a flat handplane, even needs more vertical area to really fly across. I tried riding it with the deeper end at the front but no, it needs the deeper end to be right at the back, might even think about sweeping deeper sides further back.
And changing the vertical angle from 15 deg to 10.
The only drawback on this one would be that I’ve brought the horizontal planing area down to 50 sq in and that’s a not enough for an all rounder handplane… I’ll up it to 60 sq in for the next version.
So now I keep testing this version and start designing the next one…
Bill, if you want to send me a set of drawings I can build it for you ?
What I had envisionsed would be very much like your current version, only with the sides at 45-degree angles – assuming your blue logo is the front. The curves would be a bit different but the same concept with 45-degree angles.
If I can make some progress on Income Tax, I will try to put together some graphics.
Hi Bill, the logo is at the front, I did try riding it in reverse but it was just ‘wrong’.
Ill send you a PM about the fin angles.
Heres some pics of shitty sunny summer surf in Sydney…not big waves at all but it shows that the new design creates a lot of lift and drive even on small waves. You can fly along even on little grovellers.
No not reversed just at 45-degrees to the horizontal. Your PM was clear.
Results of empirical testing trump my idea.
Here’s the complete surprise handplane, 3" wider than most other handplanes but easy to bank. Central grip is balanced front and back and the curved a ch gives it suspension over the choppy face and taking steep drops. I can feel the side foils spread out under pressure. I designed it as a concept not sure if it would work so it is a real surprise that it’s so good. I would manufacture this design but I think it’s a bit too modern looking, maybe ?
Too modern? Never. I like it. It is a winner. Refine it. Sell and market if you have the desire. Branding, branding, branding…
Maybe soften/round the front and back corners some to make them more user safe and even more modern looking. Get out the old French Curve and have at it.
Quickly played with your new shape to give it some rounder edges (internal front corners need some rounding). I think I got it backward though (short front & long rear) – you get the idea though.
Another version: revised & smoother.
Hobbs, nice looking planes, really digging the last one. Did you decide on a finish?
Brett, PM sent your way…
Id buy any of these…sell them !!!..or sell the plans to backyarders even…although the latter is probably counter productive from a profit perspective …
Nice ideas guys, I think there’s room for everyone to make their own version if they want. These are only prototypes but when/if the designs get seriously refined I’ll make copies and hand them out.
hell yeah, im in…i think id get around to doing this before I did a surfmat as I’ve got all the Vac kit setup anyway…just be nice if it warmed up a tad…bring on the summer !!!

Here’s a little different (and not as futuristic) take on a surf plane. My mat plane. Unfortunately no ride footage.
I have a 10" and a 24" version. They can virtually go anywhere since they’re so small. Paddling out is super easy because I can carry it in my mouth or throw it ahead of me and wipeouts just require a good grip. I’ve been giving them to friends but they haven’t tried them yet. It’s also a great use of extra mat cuttings.
