Thanks: to Mike Daniel for some choice grains of advice and vast intangibles, Lee V for inspiration (“oooooh baby,”) all the hull guys for sharing something sublime, Grandpa for sculpting art that rips, MP, Alby Falzon, Steve Pezman,

The Leaf has about 1/4 inch of belly throughout

The Stubby about 1/8

forgiveness built in

Theyre both gonna be quads

(Heck no, I’m not trying to glass these–I like them!)

(Hope they work)

The rest and the outlines here: http://www.flickr.com/…/16998046@N06/page1/

Make yourself at home. Hope you like. Click on the pic to see it bigger, and click on All Sizes to see it full size.

(Probably wasn’t gonna post this, but Lee and Mike said to, and MD said he would if I didn’t)

Never mind the cheap table

EDIT: Jeez.

Sorry:

Leaf 6’4" 13 21 16.5, 2.75

Stubby 6’0" 16.5 22.5 16.5, 2.75

Oh yeah-- sunlight shaping, with afternoon shade (shadows)

Sleek Janklow! Curious what glassing schedule will be used? and what fin attachment method

to promote flex from the S-Deck?

(BTW, I was going to ask if that was a Cherry Wood Shape Display table, but never mind…jk).

Thanks,

George

Thanks, GG

4x4x4 x 4x4 ?

Futures is what people that do EPS around here recommend and what a certain rocket scientist down in FL likes for EPS too.

Personally, I wanted to go LokBox kinda, but nobody has the jig around here I guess.

I’m hoping for grace from the Great Spirit on the whole yellowing thing. Or at least uniform yellowing.

The title on your thread says One-pound foam, so I imagine you will experience some decent

flex. I’ve tested quite a few diff schedules, and found multiple layers of lighter cloth is more

stretchy than the same total weight of heavier cloth layers. (ie. 3 layers of 4oz flexed more

than 2 layers of 6).

Please do follow up with ‘field test’ results. The flex you are exploring is something I have been

working on for some time now…

Ack, I hadn’t thought of that–

I did these simultaneously as my #1

over the last year (lol)

2 lb. EPS–good stuff from a local insul foam co. (Ryder)

Maybe I’ll describe my tools (also kinda laugh-worthy)

maybe

EDIT: BTW, I weigh 215 pounds, and I’m pretty damn front-footed

Great lookers – definitely

sculpture

thanks many thanks

I really like the outline on the stubby. Looks like it would be lots of fun. The flex should make it pop.

Thanks–I should have said they’re both meant to catch fat waves on the outside (4-500 yards out) and carve them up for a couple hundred and a couple/few re-forms-- it’s what we got–these outlines are heavily influenced by fish .

I seriously wish I could get them finished out by COIL for the whiteness, spring, and durability, but the logistics are unworkable.

Nice work!

I love the stubby, I’m sure you will rip on them both!

Some great sculpting has surely been done on them.

More layers of thin cloth are stronger than the thicker cloth because there is less resin in between.

That is why the thicker cloth will be stiffer, thicker laminate. Bigger rail laps can make the board stiffer too.

Less resin means also less yellowing. I use 2-component boat lacquer with UV filter as finish.

Horrible stuff, but it works fine against the sun. When fully hardened it is perfect as gloss coat.

Easy sanding and polishing.

Oh, I can’t wait to see the finished board and get the full ride reports.

Thanks for posting,

Keep up the good work!

Sjoerd

Look what happened while I was sleeping…

After a year of hard work(?), fourteen seperate fin decisions, and nine hundred thirty two minor

shape adjustments, this pair reflects the amount of thought (and time) that went into them.

When G sent me the pics, I told him he’d better post them, or I’d start a thread w/o him. I was

going to title it ‘‘janklow goes shaping’’ – at least that would fit on the screen.

Really impressive first effort(s), my friend!

Mike

lovely shape greg

real lush

i wouldnt recomend futures

i think that fcs with inserts suit a more flexible tail and the inserts prevent your board filling up with water if/when the fin system eventually starts to leak

I’m with you on the fcs/inserts thing but janklow’s glasser isn’t. We get surprisingly good

tail flex using futures, though. And of course j-low could change his mind again and glass them

himself, I’ve offered him ‘‘help’’ with doing the inserts and install on fcs. I’m sure you’d have some

good advice for him with regard to that also.

We’d better stop or we’ll get the poor boy all confused…

Haha! That’ll be my story-- “I RIP THEM BOTH!”

Thanks Sjoerd

I was actually thinking about using some 4# pour foam (in a lovely pale yellow) but didn’t know how that would fare, and then Mike raised a concern about possible distortion of the surrounding blank, and stuff–I think I would hotcoat, mask off the tail, cut the holes, pour it, let it expland up and out, cut the cap of the mushroom off, peel the tape, install the plugs in the junk with epx

How bout that? I gotta try it on scrap–hey that means I gotta get some more foam and cut another board…

Here we go… I knew we could get you confused again. If you want to go back to doing fcs,

I’ll see if I can come up with the biscuits and then you put them in pre-glassing and it’s just

a normal install from there. But I’d like to see you get these boards finished this year… You’re

going to drive your glasser crazy but then that’s what us shapers do.

Looky there! I just referrred to you as a shaper! (that means you have to drive a crappy old

truck, live in a pile of dust, and speak pedantically to others on surfboard design)

Maybe you should return to your more lucrative career as an F1 aerodynamicist?

Mike

Hi Greg -

Really nice shapes! Unbelievable first attempt.

Great job on those 2 shapes.I’m sure they will fly!

Very nice Janklow! I can’t wait to see them finished.
