2015 build comp. read the first comment. 2015BC

It’ll be the 2015 build comp. (2015BC). "2015BC must go in the thread title and a link be placed to the thread here.

There will be three judges, people who are nominated and agree to look at and judge the “BUILD THREADS”. So nominate a judge asap.

I will nominate one, and I will donate a set of gearbox fin boxes to the one judged as the winner. I have no connection with gearbox except that Robin and Lance have helped me a whole lot on my shaping learing curve

I can send a photo copy of router templates (to use to create your own router template) to whoever wins or you can purchase from Gearbox or borrow the router jig from someone who has one. I’ll give a 5 fin set up. 2 x 8 degree 2 x4 degree and a centre fin. I assume there will be international postage so I offer to go halves with the winner in the postage to anywhere in the world.

The plugs cost me $40 Aussie dollars. Just for interest sake.

The Build threads can be judged out of 10 in three areas. “1. Ingenuity, 2. General Cool Factor, and 3. Functionality.” Then I’ll do the math, average it down to a score out of 30 or better still the juges can leave their scores as a comment on the thread and then they can be added up for a score out of 90, the I cant be seen to be scamming it.

I reserve the right to enter cause I’m just a learner who loves build threads and I will not be doing any of the judging.

I suggest that the people of influence on this page see if they can ask some of our recent HOTSEAT participants. Keen to discuss nominations for judges.

Obviously you have to 2015BC in the title of your thread and then link it to this thread.

Feel free to shoot me down in flames, but you dont have to enter.

Go for it!
We could use some build threads around here. A welcome break from the schoolyard bickering.
I probably won’t be able to participate but look forward to seeing what comes out of it.

upvote for that.

sk8ment

Been following this board build.

Caught my eye in the Damn it post

I liked it.

So now my observation.

8 degree, Hummm *(see more below)

rears 4 degree,check

center, check

  • 8 degrees?

Be advised by an old twin fin guy.

#1 “Kick da fin”

#2 Chin dents, ah mosty on the nose as

your knees may tend to buckle in hard tuns!

Ride report

Well this isn’t really a build thread but the yellow and blue one I built exactly the same with 8 degree front and 4 degree rears is awesome. I dont have a center fin in it.

very fast, good flex, no stringer, soft light foam, double 6 with a 6 on bottom. goes really nice. tight zippy turns. be interesting to see what difference the cedar stringers make. I hesitate to call them parabolic as it seems like a, lets say “silly marketing term”, they are rail stringers i guess.

really good on forhand, in clean waves. havent had it on back hand in good waves yet but it shows promise.

good mix of rail when you want rail and bit of tail release when you want too. not bad for a 40 year old

Not sure what you mean by this

PS i have one judge comfirmed.

Robin Mair of Mair surfboards. Creator of Hanalei fins and the Gearbox system.

Now for the sway locks family to come up with two more.

I explain as maybe you haven’t experienced literally kicking your fin with your foot.

Us old-timers came from a single fin time and swirled our legs on the swing around.

And I bled a lot until I learned.

Chin dents?

Again twin fin days…

Pulling too many G’s on bottom turns generally

one of three things would happen

  1. Knees buckle, chin slams deck leaving perfect chin imprint.

  2. Front foot slips, splitz and slight face plant indentation.

  3. You learn to stay low and just stay on the deck, toe and heel dents.

Digging your work! (I really like what you are doing)

All of it!

I would love to hear more on your fin set up…

Best,

 Matty

I’m actually healing a hole in the outside of my foot from the rear orange fins in the pic here. So I hear ya.

And staying low, I try to stay as low as my knees can handle.

I do use normal fins, but I love the fins from “hanalei”

They are out of the ordinary, I have used the Hanalei/gearbox quad palcements on the last two quads, and they really seem to bring the fins alive. I’ve used them in Makee placements but they really come alive in the one I’ve used.

I found the set up a little slidy on the 5’4" so when I did this one thats 5’6" plus a smidge I set the whole pacement back 1/4 of an inch. So far its been the bomb.

It really means alot to me to here you say you like what I’m doing, you really seem to know your stuff. And I love your “underground revival” thread. I’m not sure how I found it but I now subscribe to it and love catching up on whats happening in the MATTWHO ranch…

Sorry to anyone else this is suposed to be about a 2015BC thread.

Oh BTW I worked out that this board I’m making is a contender for the cheap arse award, as the only thing I had to buy was the fin boxes and the cloth. Had the resin in the shed, and the blank is rubbish hahahahahaahh. The aussie dollar is only worth 70 cents US so if resinhead spent 50 bucks on his thats 71 dollars AU so I’m well under that.

YEW

Kind of agree with Matty on 8 degrees. I recently built a new board with these FCS fins I got on sale. They have quite a bit of cant built into the fin, so when I stick them into boxes with normal 4-5 degree cant, they seem way too out there. My new board has 0 degree inserts in the proboxes. With that the fins seem much closer to normal, but I can always change out the inserts. The minimum would be 4 degrees though. When I talked to Robin Mair a few years back he was using the 8 degree cant with his single concave bottom boards. They end up with less than 8 degrees.

If you never had the luck of kicking your fins, I hope you don’t find out how unlucky it is. With a severe cant, you can end up with a side fin impaled in your thigh. Or you can be paddling your board backwards (with the fins in front) to get over the shallows and slice your hands. Sliced my hand on the side fin of a GG board once too. Seen Mr. Resinhead do that as well.

Any takers on the comp yet?

I’ve got some ideas in the early stages… Well let be honest I have a dozen ideas, its just choosing which one to do next, that’s the issue.

  1. Another finless, with big channels.

  2. An assym short board from two different out lines off blending curves.

  3. 2 different side cut concepts like the firewire cornice.

  4. Or a 5’0" bar of soap, planing hull groveller. Based on the “Nug B” from blending curves.

Then, should I use the old sun burnt PU blank I picked up for 30 bucks or go with the light weight eps I’ve been toying with of late…

HMMMMMMM

Any input on another two judges?

I know those fins and they always had a huge amount of cant in any set up, it was kinda their thing.

Hey skatement, just saw this - the thread title is not clear, at least not to me, I thought this was a compsand build.  I’m all for it, but needs more exposure to really get going.  Not sure I get the multiple judges thing, do they confer together, or how does it work?  Cool that you got Robin Mair!

What I would suggest is lay out the ground rules clearly, then campaign to get some cool prizes donated, before beginning the actual competition.  Once you get some good prizes lined up, and everyone understands the rules and the rewards, then begin the competition.

Worth going back and learning what you can from the SBC, before beginning this one in earnest.  Anyway, you handle it how you want, its your baby.  The last one was awesome, produced some great build threads, but at the very end kinda fizzled, and I’d hate to see this one finish the same way.  But I’m with Chrisp, love those build threads with photos!

I tried to explain it all in the first comment in the thread. But the thread went on a tangent when mattwho started asking stuff;). Love your guts Matty. Basically a judge reads a thread, judges the build, assigns their three scores and then sends them to me. I’ll average it. Or they can leave the scores as a comment on the thread. Then we can add them up to give a score out of 90 that way I can be seen to be scamming it. Judges scores are final. No one is aloud to dispute. Any thoughts people have on the comp or suggested judges send me a message.

There are some great minds who post on here maybe some of them could be a judge?

Can I enter a build that is already in process?  Actually nearing the ended, but fairly well documented?

HELL YES!!!

Just edit the heading to include 2015BC and save a link here.

Ususally the links get put here as the builds are happening, that way all the “lurkers” can suss out your build and give feedback.

Stoked to have you on board!!!

Good odds to get a set of fin boxes at the moment.
