Eat shit Surfoils , you should be knighted for your services to boredom. I wanted an authentic Horan surfboard, not an annexed copy of someone elses work. I already have a couple of McCoys that dont work as well as they would with more modern rails etc.
Kayu, I know your on the pay roll so thats what your expected to say, and you do make nice boards with McCoy Logo's on them.

My comment was backing yours, but I'll go eat some shit anyway.
All right, fair call. I just get annoyed that any board of this type is automatically a McCoy rip-off because Geoff invented all aspects of the design out of the ether, what a lie.
At least when McTavish claims to have invented everything bar the wheel, he does it with a smile and a wink.
This board is something I couldn't get at home and is a type of board that Cheyne was riding independently of McCoy, and is in fact quite different in many ways. These boards have seemingly morphed into McCoy's intellectual property (but you can't have one because only Geoff's boards are perfect)
This board has , as Solo has said, some positive built into it such as harder rails in the nose and a better thickness distribution so as not to tail drag like the McCoys do if the wave runs out of puff.
I wouldn’t say improving. would never claim that. Just experimenting in the same spirit Cheyne did. To provide something a bit different for folks who like the designs but can’t wrap around the complete neutrality thing. Neutrality works for me…more when I was heavier. I surf in a style that the unbalanced bottom works, but I also like the skatey style of modern thrusters and quads and you don’t get that from neutral bottoms and rails. It all works…how do you want to surf. Most great shapers including Geoff say that. I wish we could get back to discussing these designs without all the stress or believing someone is attempting to pull a fast one and etc. If you go way back in the archives some of the best threads dealt with this subject. It’s interesting because it was passed off and now some are rediscovering thickness and float and etc.
mono that looks like a great board I’ll bet your stoked, hope it rides as good as it looks. Curious to know your Ht/Wht/Age?
I have a 6’6" that is replica of a Nugget, the first couple of surfs I didn’t know if it was a keeper or not, last few weeks it’s the only board I’ve been taking to the beach so I could spend some time on it in all conditions. Ended up switching out the fin’s (thruster) from FCS PG-7’s to G-AM’s and it made a big difference. There are some things that I want to tweak on it to help battle a bad shoulder and old age, so I’ll move up in length on the next one, hoping to pick up a bit more paddle speed. Going to talk to a few Shapers that I respect that have some experience with McCoy influenced boards and get their opinions on if I should continue to pursue boards of this nature or go another direction.
Greg Paustch is a premier shaper who shaped all the McCoy’s in the US during McCoy’s heyday. He shaped pretty much everything Cheyne rode when he would come to California. Ask Preston, Kwock, DR and the 56 crew who was the man around '80, and their answer would be GP; why do you think they left Wave Tools? I even looked to and learned stuff from Paustch back in the day. He’s in my Shaper’s “Hall of Fame”, and most people here aren’t, and never will be…
No doubt about Ghettorat. He goes in my top five best shapers I have ever ridden or seen and I have worked and ridden some of the best. A humble servant with no fragile ego. A rare bird in the surfing industry.
Thanks for the kind words gr8day. I'm just over 6' / 210 pounds and perilously close to fifty. This style of board is right up my alley without having to go too long for an easy paddle.
I cant recommend enough who I'm buying this board off for product knowledge, bloody hell! And to get G.P.to have shaped it... its an honour to have in my quiver of keepers.
Thanks also ghettorat for the heads up on Greg Pautsch who is harder to get information on(the net) than Batman.
This board has the features that Cheyne liked in rail differences (among other things) and Solo would be more able than I to tell you about them, as I have never so much as spoken to Cheyne Horan in my life. Like I said before, its something I couldn't get at home, and I live close to Byron Bay..
It used to be a really big deal to have a board from America in Australia , and I'm looking forward to having this one !
Thanks for the info Mono, you got me by 25lbs but I’m just on the wrong side of 50. I would be very interested on your thoughts of how the board performs after you’ve had some time on it.
I hope this forum can continue on without some of the vulgar language used and personal attacks toward other members that to me was uncalled for. We don't want this place turn out the way some other forums have evolved to. Peace...
Have not got it yet but it is not too far away. Solo / Noel has sent me pictures to tide me over until it does though. I think this planshape is nicely balanced and not too extreme in any one area.
The fin is a custom spitfire made by Larry ,who I have been told was kind enough to sign it for me.....Thankyou Larry.
I have wanted all types of American boards over the years (I'd give my left arm for an "Ugly") so I guess its better late than never !
Mono…spoke with Pautschy this arvo. Will have info for you Early next week and if all goes well you will be picking it up shortly. Undamaged. I think your first board which would have been too think was re shaped into something else.
Yeah, some aspects of the other are just flawed but you become a pariah even mentioning them and lose heart in the end. I had an old Farrelly from the eighties that I sold on Flea-bay last year that had the same rails as the McCoy and I don’t think it was heralded as the second coming.
I was able to get what I wanted in the end but I had to get it from the US which is sort of the age we live in .Without wanting to sound like an advertisment for Solo, you couldn’t get someone better to deal with, but he has his own issues with the south verses north thing which I don’t entirely get coming from Australia
This board sort of looks like a McCoy but is really an egg hybrid that should address the issues that don’t work with the other. I guess we will see when I get it
Thanks for being open minded Cuttlefish as it saps your chi always being on the defensive.
Ha Ha…well it has something to do with all my Aussie friends referring to us as either Septic Tanks that rhyme with Yanks or Yanks. Being from the south…Yankee is akin to a curse word describing a Southron. ; )
Thank you for the compliment Mono. Also…on the Spitfire. Having ridden it quite a bit now, I think it works best on boards with some rail like double enders. I don’t care for mine on my super wide tailed zaps, but I love it on my Fat BSTARD.
I would never call you names Solo 'cause I know you guys have guns.
I have had quite a few PM's about this board and what does it go like with the edge in the rails ect. Seems to have a bit of interest in it. Every PM I get I always think what have I done to this guy?.. but its about the board and shipping from the States.
Is there a thread on how to go about it ? Seems that I'm not the only one with an eye on some American boards around here!
Thanks Mono…the best way is two at a time similar size because the box isn’t much bigger and you just split the shipping. Even if it’s $700 you only end up paying half of that and then there is the difference in our dollar vs yours. If you get some stuff going over their we can actually work out a lower price on boards just to keep the stoke going.
Ha Ha…on the names. I’m actually not a red neck…ha ha…really…I’m not. Then again…I like Punk Rock and New wave so who knows.
I had an Astron Zot and I was like yourself in trying other fins to make the board perform how I wanted. What I found was that fins with some base (gullwing was under 4") gave it the drive I wanted ,but only added to the stiffness of the boards performance in other areas.
I think the gullwing is the best compromise but not the best fin. The steadfast refusal to alter the rails dictated the gullwing fin which has a passive sort of performance to it (fin base again).

Mono - I busted my gull wing two surfs after getting the ZOT - so dont really have a good recall of how they went - I will have to get another; interesting that you rate them so highly for this board. I have surfed the ZOT loads and love it; I find I am addicted to the feel of the single fin on a nice overhead clean wave as you take a steep drop into the pocket (esp with the 9" dolphin). Different to the feel of a quad or thruster... this is my first single fin and for me its a keeper. That said, for me it is not a great allrounder - lacks especially if the surf is 1) to big ie: over head and a half high - much prefer a NUG; and 2) on slop - prefer a quad or whatever.
I also never realised what a can of worms that all the fin choice represents when you have a fin box - but lots of fun to.
For an allrounder think I will have to go for a more egg shape next time (I love Solo's board range, esp the lazer egg and the FB); now a segway ... talking of eggs...
CUTTLE YOUR NEW BOARD IS INSANE!!!!!!!!
this has to be the coolest finish ever - DVS is a legend. Does it float and paddle well (I know we share a common history of buying boards that we flick after realising we are missing waves or comming in early). You must be a very happy man. Now that you have this incredible allrounder completeing your fantastic quiver - I take it the thirst for new boards is totally quenched....... I will miss you at BA (boardaholics anonymous). OG
