7' Step Up build thread

yes that was a pre fit up

what I did was peel them back one at a time and basted slow cure epoxy under each one and layed them back in place.

then in the bag she went

sorry I dont have any shots of me working , I dont have enough hands

here she is in the bag

Very cool. What are you using as breather? I can’t see anything.

you see correctly

no breather required

And out of the bag

The plan is to fill the foam area's with a layer of 6oz ,, yes lots of wedges, this I will do in stages to acomadate

masking, I will use UV resin so I can speed up things

there are 28 wedged area's to fill it may take some time.

after the fill layer is in I will baste a hot coat over them to get the last bit of elevation to match the veneer.

then sand it even as can be,

then a 4oz or 6oz full deck wrap with maybe a 2/3rd stomp patch

then hot coat pinlins and gloss

hows that sound?

dpicton

I wish your pic was larger

Ican barely make it out, but my guess is its nice

And I was thinking you would do the whole same thing, only with darker wood in contrast… But no, you chose the easy way out instead… Wedges of fiberglass… Sssshhhh…

(Kidding, just in case you wonder. Incredible work. I’ve got to try vacuum-bagging someday…)

wow that looks amazing!

I would like to see a picture of the point where all the wedges come together.

that looks to me as the hardest part to get real neat.

great, i'll keep an eye on this thread!

Ken,

Good work so far, looking fab!

Do you first apply poly, let it tack, and then glue the fibres stiffly into the wood wedges? Like they glass channels?

Basting sounds like a good plan too, but how do you sand without killing the wood? Do you seal coat the wood first ?

Also, the color pinline, what will it be? maybe black is too contrasting with the wood and yellow? What are your thoughts?

It is a beatiful, beautiful surfboard the should in my opion get wooden glass on fins [quads], and possibly a heavier glassing? Keep it in good shape longtime! This board in half would be the biggest drama ever, dont you agree?

Can you maybe show some close up shots, especially of the location where the wood points join in the middle of the board?

Mr balsa,

I did have the option of doing the alternating dark/light wood. and actualy that would have been the easy way out,,,,, because my veneer guy could have given me a full sheet sunburst of anything I wanted (preglued) all I would of had to do would be to cut the outline and bag it,,,,

Oh!,,, and your one to talk,,,, LOL!

I was thinking he was going to inlay Mother of Pearl purfling around the edges…then inlay with contrasting wood…

NIce work Ken.

ps I found the problem with wall hanger / usable surfboards ( I have one in the corner of my house that is doing neither because of my indecision) is that the art is usually on the deck. It’s much harder to display the bottom, unless hung in the rafters. When the time comes to surf it you’re going to smear surf wax all over that art? And dimple the shebang with your dirty feet?

Ken,

This is a cool ass board! Very creative with great color contrast between the deck and the bottom. So you didn’t inlay the wood? You just laid it on top? This has to add a lot of strength on the deck as well as esthetic beauty. Got any pin lines planned? Great work!

Seems I found this thread a little late, but will put my oar in the water anyway....

A quart of resin will do me one lam on a 10-0 using 6 oz glass.  UV cure means I have plenty time to make sure everything is nice.  Yellow is the easiest color to manage, bar none, but a full ounce is a lot of pigment, and will slightly affect the strength of the lamination.  Noting your comment about little money to spend, does the wasted resin bother you?

Actualy, I'm not wasting any resin

the only thing that hit the floor so far was yellow when I lamed the bottom

the fill in cloth and resin was left over from previous boards

blank was $10 (Brad from FoamEZ and I did some hoarse tradeing awhile back)

and 6oz cloth was a gift from a realtor that sold my house (kind of a kickback)

veneer comes from a bro (free)

Man Wouter!!!

lets see.......

I lay a sheet of glass to cover 4 or 5 wedges and brush in resin (too close to squeegee)

walk it in the sun til semi firm

cut at veneer and peel excess.

the fill coat is to get the foam elevated to the veneer, I should just skim the veneer (fingers crossed)

the veneer is eucaliptus and has a tight grain so I probly wont baste it

Pinlines,,,, still thinking on what to do

I've allready lamed a Probox logo in the fin patch, And got a Thruster set of box's

el cocko

heres a shot at the center

doesnt look too pritty

but I have a plan to remedy it
