7' Step Up build thread

heres todays events

masked off a section of wedges then cut a piece of glass to cover the area

carefully aplied resin on the foam areas

kicked it in the sun

then cut and peeled off the wood

and repete on another section

This is crazy!! This is the second shape I’ve ever done and it was finished almost 2 months ago. I’m inspired by how you took it the extra step and did the entire deck. In retrospect I wish I had done the same thing. Being only my second shape I just wanted to make sure it I was doing it right before I spent too much time on it to not come out at all.

I did it a little differently though and actually used my router to cut out the foam to fit all the balsa strips. It’s a little more organic and obviously not as precise as yours.

Great job Ken

Using the router by hand is actually really difficult. The toughest part is getting anywhere near the rails. When the deck or bottom starts to curve the router begins to cut a little deeper. I haven't figured out a way to make a nice uniform cut of about 1/16", which is the thickness of the balsa I'm using. I've thought of making some sort of platform for the router to sit on and ride flush with the deck or bottom. The problem is without something for the router to ride on it starts sitting on areas that have already been routed and starts to cut slightly deeper.

Once the design is into the foam I'll just use a sheet of 220 on my sanding block and finish sand the shape. It's not a perfect process obviously and I waste a whole lot of canned air but for a beginner it works.

I haven't ridden the board yet, I ran out of resin to do the fin boxes so it's on it's way, but hopefully routing the board doesn't put any weak points in the foam. I can't imagine 1/16" would be that damaging. Hopefully right around the time I finish sanding another Nor'easter will swing through so I can test it out!

How thick are the veneers?

Ive been told the veneer is .045"

it has a paperbacking that is heated and pressed on at the veneer factory

I will mic the veneer today just so I know

I finished the glass inlays  ( that was a pain,, but as they say)

then sanded her down and now Im thinking on my next step

something for the center point

thinking of a compass rose

like this in veneer

Precisely what I was thinking about!

I mic'd the veneer today,,,,,

.026 to .028"  depending on the sheet

the eucaliptus was .026 and the zebra was .028

Last night I started making the compass rose

first I drew out the patern

next was to glue up some strips with dark and light veneers

I picked the eucaliptus and zebra (they were handy)

this was tricky and after a few malattemps I taped the back side and super glued them with Zap a Gap

this worked great

cutting out all the pieces was eye straining to say the least,

and took a lot of focus, so no shots of me cutting but its not hard to imagin someone useing scissors and or a razor blade.

heres a few shots of it

EDIT: this thing is 3" tip to tip

And heres what it looks like on the board

SWEET!

Excellent touch to a great design. I’ve gotta find some of that wood. The guy you got it from, what type of wood working business is he in?

I’m completely in awe.  Wow…just wow.  Speachless.

Applause.  It does kind of make me dizzy looking at it though.  It has that Op art effect.
