'72- Nuuhiwa's Fish

Anybody have any pics or specs on the fish Nuuhiwa rode at Huntington in '72? You know, the one that was stolen and nailed to the OB pier? I’d like outline shots, especially of the tail.

Thanks,

-Charlie

Surely not THE fish you’re looking for, but I have this ad with a Nuuhiwa fish made by Dyno:

Yup, looking for the '72 one in particular. It was a really short single-wing twin, right? I admit I don’t remember, 'cause I was born in '78. I apologize for being a young punk upstart grommet. (at 30).

I understand that it might be hard to find, since it got destroyed. News picture, maybe?

Thanks, balsa.

Charlie…don’t know how into it you might be, but check this:

Actually, wasn’t Herb involved in Dyno during that era? You out there Herb?

Herb knows. Magicman too.

There is a good section of david ripping on the fish at Rocky point in the movie Goin Surfing. I thought the fish was 5’5" i have seen footage of the 72 world contest with him in it but i can not recall the movie.

it was probably a few years later , but i think the movie ‘five summer stories’ [which i have on video ] also had a segment on nuuhiwa [and brad mccaul] , and i’m pretty sure david is riding some pretty short fishes there , too ?

 cheers

ben

Keith, I’m not shitting you when I say this, but I bought that board in the first pic from a guy in Michigan for $25 and brought it back to California. I surfed it for years and recently sold it to a guy named Jim Bald. I have his number. Perhaps he would sell it back to you. It’s the same board… I guarantee. I restored though… here are some pics after the resto…

One of the greatest crimes ever perpetrated on a competitor. The truely classless underbelly of OB showed that day.

I have a Hal Jepsen DVD called “Surfing Shorts” that besides some interesting 70s footage, contains footage of the '72 World Contest in San Diego. In it, Nuuhiwa is riding a fish much like the one pictured in this thread. I can’t really say its the same exact board, but it sure looks like it. It doesn look like it has wings, just a basic fish outline. I have seen pictures of David holding wing swallow fishes in some mid 70s ads and photos, but I think wings was’nt popularized until a year or two after the World Contest. I really like this DVD. It also contains some 60’s longboarding, early twin fin surfing in Florida and concludes with the 1971 Expression Session held at Pipeline. Everyone who was somebody during that era was out there at the Pipe, showing what they could do, without the spectre of trying to win the heat. As predicted, Lopez was the stand out, backed up by performances by Rory,Owl, Sam Hawk, BK, Nuuhiwa amongst others.

[sorry it’s so dark and grainy …i took it off my tv screen , with the el cheapo digi camera of mine …]

[he nearly pulled a carving 360 on one of the waves in ‘going surfing’ , at rocky point]

Yup !

I’ve known Magicman for some time now(since the early 70’s).

Thanks to Epac for gettin’ us back together.(Still wear that shirt he gave me back in like 04…and I WEAR IT PROUD !!!)

That fish post was sometime ago ,like 2000-01,and I posted it rather quickly w/o thinking it thru.

Actually that fish is a Brom(and one other, red fish) …the Martin was never posted, for some negelectful moment ,on my part.

My best 3 fish that I owned were all built by Steve Brom w/ 4th and 5th Martin’s 6th was a Lis.

I see that someone posted a comment on the particular fish pic.

Lis was definitely the brainchild of the modern fish, and some did take his KNEEBOARD design(like myself)and rode them upright rather that using them as a kneeboard only"(1969-70).

Martin and Brom took the design and modified it for stand-up useage…eg. toe and canted fins…flat bottoms…contoured rails…tucked edges…etc.,etc.,etc…before the general on slot of ,“I did it firsts” came along.

Martin never did stay with it very long, but Brom kept improving the design and never lost site of it true abilities.

Today,You can still get a Brom much like the originals built back in the days.

As far as Lis goes,I dunno,Lost touch with him after I moved to the LA area in 1970-71 from Imperial Beach,Ca.I hear he’s around and still builds boards.

As far as shape/era of board goes…The fish that Keith posted of mine, is a dead ringer for the board that david got stolen in OB.

No wings,

Wings generally didn’t even come into play until 73,and on a fish… like 74ish.

And the board that D is riding at RP is 5’11" x 21", not 5’5".

“truely classless underbelly of OB” - what a great phrase.

Greg, can I use this to make bumper stickers & T shirts for the OB locals?

Most of them are truly classless BEERbellies now though…hangin’ near the pier since the 70s.

Yeh, fuck OB.

Too many transplants, trolls and tweakers…

OB … one of the exceptionally beautiful places in CA. I was traveling with David the year before the 72 World Contest. He worked so hard for that event, focused on it. The theft of that board and the hanging were equal to the Nancy Kerrigan attack. Took a great surfer out of his game. He should have won that event, he was the best guy in the water. The fact that he lost can be squarely placed on the envy those OB criminals, whoever they are, felt and the crime they obviously felt was justified.

Jimmy Blears won the event and faced years of critisim for winning and is an unfortunate footnote in history because his victory was and is seen as undeserved. He surfed hard and won on the judges score cards and deserves to be remembered as a great competitor who surfed hard and beat the odds to become world champ.

After the loss David never surfed back to the form that he showed in the months leading up to that event. For Jimmy what he got was far worse than not winning. Scorn and disrespect for a great accomplishment. What a way to lose a world championship. What a way to win one. What a crime.

I think it could make a great bumper sticker … have at it.

I remember seeing it all go down.Very ugly! Some pissed off Cliff and OB guys thinking that David ripped off a design they had thought up, and felt it was propritary knowledge . They felt credit was due.Greg you were working for Dyno back then, right.

David and I were working for Dyno. Nothing in surfboards has ever been or will ever be proprietary. The minute you shape it it belongs to the world. The OB creatons should have rejoiced that a design that came from the OB underground won a world championship beneath one of the most gifted surfers of all time. The ultimate vindication of a contraversial design. They could have claimed the ultimate victory. Instead they thought small like the jealous little boys they were. Instead they showed their worst. No class idiots.

Right on Herb…Steve is still regularly cranking out beautiful fish (fishes?) in Santa Barbara…he’s the man. If it’s a fish, look to Brom…I’ll use him as a refernce anytime!

Emulation is the sincerest form of flattery…
