a rare find Maybe?

All of this for something you only use on “occasion”…Lol

You got a skil planer, some “rare” surforms etc

BUT…

Still haven’t managed to build, buy or even acquire a set of “shappin” stands…

Let me guess though.

You are just “waitin on lumber dude” ???

or did you “blow your “shappin” stand wad” aswell???

Should do a "shappin"stand thread when you do get around to it…

Reckon you could do a thread on how to give dime a dozen, run of the mill boards stupid names like “Jims magic pulled in mango green shaped with pp and surform and sanding block vee bottom extra kick tail hard rail super amazing quad fish” !

Mannn, how do you think these amazing names up?? And how do you know they will be amazing…

Especially since you have surfed once since “shappin” these amazing boards!

I don’t think so…  The only thing identical is the blade itself.  The blade is held in place by a plastic “thumb screw” which is nothing like the old “Surforms” whose blades were held in place with an actual metal screw assembly.  I know your agitated(sp), but a 60’s Surform is nothing like the cheapened junk beimg sold at HD currently.  Lowel

Stop bashing now!

Some guy is stoked he got some new tools…we should be happy…I’m stoked Shapeguy can carve out a few blanks with his hand tools…

I have my demons… let’s all take a break from the bad vibes…Shape on my friend…that’s why we’re here…shape on…Share the stoke!

Lay off the guy, please.

FYI I love shapaholic. I bet he could tell some wicked camp fire stories at the big sur meet up.I actually learned something from him ,kinda. It was beer thirty while I was surforming, wind was blowing.I put a weight on my blank so it didn’t blow off and thought of shapaholic. He said his blew off one time because no weights…shoots he might have saved my board from going south.

OH right…

i forgot, only this guy can annoy the f@#k out of people and troll peoples threads…

And stingray, being stoked on shaping doesn’t give anyone the right to talk the shit this guy does.

Thanks for the help! I’m starting to feel bullied? I don’t know why the moderators don’t intervene? I dunno what to say? I’ve shaped two boards, I bought a skil100, I just started surfing again after a 12 yr inland move…i caught sum good waves, I’m happy w board, I finally got my dream planer after 27 yrs! Have a heart. Thanks again for the help guy’s! I don’t know what to say? Other than I plan to ignore the haters.

Gettin back to surforms, it’s not about being cool etc…I’m sharing the fact that older tools can often be BETTER tools. That’s all. As for my long winded story, I was drinking last night and I got carried away. Sorry for my long winded story.-Jim

uh, didn’t you just tell me in another thread to stay out of your business?  short memory?

for the record, I’m a hair trigger away from intervening, but you’re probably not gonna like it if I do.

Tom- thanks! Yeah, using a soft weight -could be anything… I use a heavy rubber sanding block, but a beer would work…a sock full of sand or whatever. Just make sure it doesn’t Mar up your blank. Btw I think you are cool to, and your boards are looking Sweet! T c-Jim

.

Man, I’m just liking how rugged these old tools are…if anyone has a cheaper resource for blades - pm me or let me know.I found one vendor who has microblades for a deal -so I’ll post a link if I can find it.

I thought everyone knew to put a dead weight on a blank when shaping?  Given how light most blanks are these days, they can move around on your stands even when indoors, just from the pressure and force exerted while working on it. Sheesh!

I  always try to buy vintage tools. All of my Stanley planes.surforms and spokeshaves are vintage. I bought one of those razor planes from a Board builderr supply place and it sucked. I scored an old one on Ebay and it works great.

I also do woodworking and had all pre-world war II machines. We made good stuff in the USA back then. Things started to go downhill in the 70’s. On surform blades I try to buy the fine toothed ones. I usually buy on ebay. The vintage blades seem to be better quality but it may just be in my head.

I use a lot of single edge razor blades in my furniture shop and they have gone to shit also.

So bottom line is that vintage is usually better. Have fun out there.

Just yesterday I was in ACE Hardware, and saw exactly what you describe.   Had a big black thumbscrew on the frame.    VERY different from the one I saw in the Home Depot two weeks ago, which I noted was exactly like my old one.     As you know the new version of the standard Surform is complete junk, which is the reason I was pleased to see that the pocket version had not been changed/‘‘improved’’.      HD may well have some older stock still on hand.     I’m going to go back and get another one, of the older version, just to have it.

Bill

Yes if they have any like the old ones;  I would pick one up.  Bit give me the word and I will send you one para nada.  Like I said I went on a thing a couple of years back and bought a bunch of them.  I was just looking at them down at my shop last nite.  PM me a mailing address and I will send you one.  I do stuff like that once in awhile, though I have a “rep” for being a hard ass.  There are some folks I respect greatly.  Would be happy to drop one in the mail to you bradah.   Lowel

Gene is/was the man. That’s pretty funny fin boy.  Classic.  Lol  Lowel

Lol Cheers Mate !
“Fin boy” got a nice ring to it I reckon!

Five minutes of Sways in the morning before I head out the door and I’m good.  Sways wouldn’t be much fun without these types of threads and rivalaries(sp)…   OK off to “Roads End” for the day.  Vaya con Dios hombres.  Lowel

Shapaholic2011 i’m not trying to hate on you, or think you’re a rival or whatever! Just that it seems you’re repeatedly shooting yourself in the foot with guys you will go to in the future for help. The best thing i’ve learned so far from Sways is " the more you learn & know, the more there is to learn! " It’s great your excited & stoked. But you need to dial it back a bit budee. Spend more time working on your own progress as a shaper & get some boards under your belt, instead of trying to preach relentlessly to those of more experience. ie-“Don’t try to teach your Grandma to suck eggs” Seriously, stay stoked & get shaping.
