Acrylic Finish Brands

I was wondering what others are using for sealing sanded finish boards. We were using Tile Guard Semi Gloss Acrylic finish for stone and marble but it was discontinued.  Any suggestions for a replacement?

Thanks,  Dave

I will try this next, you can get a catalyst for it.

I like this one.

Mako is right and I have mentioned it numerous times in other threads.  Behr Low Lustre Sealer AKA “Secret Sauce” from Home Depot…  One coat is good.  Two is great.  Wipe it on with lambs wool or staining pad.  Burnish with a 3M maroon or grey Scotchbrite pad under an orbital sander.  There are other brands of the same product.  An acrylic tile sealer.  Industry stamdard in most glass shops up and down the West Coast.

I used the low luster acrylic in the yellow bottle for a year. Wiped it on as said and polished it an hour later. Then I switched to the Resin X poly because I has sum customers complain that they were getting a reaction from sum sunscreen that would make the board feel sticky. I want to try the gloss finish in the poly finish next.

tell them thats the new hi tech traction

Sunscreen???   I’d say it had nothing to do with the sealer.  They should switch to Bullfrog.  I got the same thing on my kitchen floor.  No “five second” rule in this house.

Folks seem to use a lot of it when boating. Plus I noticed the my wakesurf boards turned darker in color when I used the acrylic compared to the poly. Lake water can get muddy at times and down in the south the water turns Orange from the clay dirt.

I've had Bullfrog (clear and white) take the acrylic off of a couple of finished surfboards. I can't remember what the sealer was, but I'm thinking it was rattle can spray on acrylic. This was sunscreen smeared on the back of my legs that was rubbing off on the rails while I sat on my board. Turned into a sticky goo. I guess it's the alcohol in the sunscreen acting as a solvent?

I gave up on Bullfrog after that. Damn shame, because I never got sunburned using that stuff.

I tried the bear low luster seal trick. Looked great when done.

Then decided to wipe it down with DNA. Huge mistake lifted

it off board all over the place like there was small globs of glue all

over it. Real pain in the arrsh to remove it all. Never do it again.

Figured it would happen down the road no matter what someone does

with sand rubbing on it using wax cleaner or what ever.

DNA -----Denatured Alcohol;  will cut , melt and otherwise destroy ANY acrylic finish.  DNA is a great Acrylic paint remover or stripper.  So---- Daaa!

Will Behr Low Luster cover the exposed weave if you have a few accidental hits from sanding?

It seals it but doesn’t really fill in the texture of the weave or make the weave disappear over dark colors. Multiple coats help the white disappear better, but still won’t fill the texture.

I’ve had good luck with min wax  polycrylic rattle can. I can not afford to experiential on these two boards.

i heard styrene will clear the fog

but it doesn’t fill the weave though

i’d like to figure out the polyethelene sheet sealers Gary young and coil are using

got to bag it but it seems like a winner

I use the Behr. Have also used Minwax polycrilic. I have a spray booth for furniture so I spray the finish on. I have also used cabinet lacquer which came out unreal but not sure of the long term results. I did it on a used board as an expirement and gave the board to a Grom.

Spraying looks a lot better than ragging it on. I do a pretty thick wet coat.

Yeah if you can use a cup gon and have a clean room or spray room any of the above mentionede finishes will look better than wiped on.  Especially the semi-gloss and Gloss.  The Behr Low Lustre wipes on easy and because of the low lustre hides imperfections  like exsposed weave and brush/wiping marks.  Nice to have one of those anti-static devices like they use in automotive paint booths.  You got one Cleanlines??  They’re not too exspensive.  Lowel

Two coats Behr low-luster. Wiped on with staining sponge (Harbor Freight). Wipe on thin to prevent lumps/streaks. I apply like doing a hot coat: cover the board, cross strokes, lengthwise strokes. Run away. 15 minutes between coats. Wring out sponge to eliminate excess as you are going. Once totally dry (hour or so), buff out with red scotch brite then grey scotch brite. This is the process I’ve arrived at after about 30 tries. Spraying would be nice but wiping is so quick and easy, and the results are good.

Howzit McDing. Usually I blow my boards off and then wipe them down with a paper towel with some naptha on it. I spray the acrylic pretty wet and then shut the exhaust fan off and close the door.

Then I go to the chapel and say a little prayer because as you well know anything can happen. My spray room is pretty clean. I use cup guns made by SICMO and they are powered by a turbine (kind of like a shop vac that blows instead of sucks ha ha) They are the best HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) guns I have found. They are like a SKIL…go on and on.
