Astron Zot not everyone's cup of tea it seems.....

So for all the Aussie fans of Geoff’s work who would like to grab the first Astron Zot I’ve seen on Ebay here’s the link…http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160462836330&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

I’ve actually bought a Southcoast DT slider from the seller a few years ago and he’s sold some very nice boards every so often (DVS carbon quad, Wegener, and so on).

Think of this as my effort at a community service since the Zot thread disintergrated.

Shame it’s not a 6-4" or a 6’6".

It might be a guy from another forum who just scored one of speedneedle’s boards and said he’d sell his Astron Zot to pay for it.

you’re a brave man cuttlefish - odds on this thread will be dead and buried in two days. The previous post from Geoff himself was gone after fifteen hours - record?

I saw that the zot the other day on ebay and posted on magicseaweed - 6’2 is too big for me. Any other rider reports? Anyone?

I can’t view ebay at work, but I’ll bet it’s the one I’m thinking of. The guy selling it won this (hope Josh doesn’t mind me linking it):

Hey guys & girls, My first post so take it easy on me heheh.

I am the one selling the Astron Zot mainly like Toby said to fund my Josh Dowling channel bottom composite board - he is a hot shaper & highly recommended - www.joshdowlingshape.com

FYI I already has a thruster McCoy ZAP 6'4 x 21 x 2 7/8 which goes off being so loose & fast, ideal for my 185 pound weight. For me it is so much more fun than a fish for Sydney waves. The Zot is another beast that needs taming being very loose but fast with the soul feel of a single fin. I am looking to purchase another but I had to get my hands on Josh's own board so this has to go unfortunatly. I am looking to purchase another later in the year, since speaking to Marc maybe a bit bigger as I want to use in a small waves for Summer time in Sydney.

I know I am opening up a can of worms here but I found Marc to the the nicest guy and he will sit you down and ask what you really want out of a McCoy. He even said to me come in and give him a run down on how it is going. I do not believe he was postinglast time for the marketing just his love of the boards. I guess if you want some technical advise just email Geoff.

Hey Freshie, how’d you find the whole single fin experience? what sort of waves did you find the zot worked in? and what overall differences between that and the zap?

Hey Batoes,

I found the single fin perfect for barelling waves and reef breaks with a bit of a wall. It still was good on regular beach break waves but I found the Zap much more responsive for beach beak waves. I really think the Zap is a sensational board and seems to get a bit forgotten over the newer Nugget design. I did however have a bit of trouble a few times on the single as I tried to turn it probably a bit too much from the front foot and it would not turn then I would eat sh_t but then I found it really came alive as I moved as far back on the tail pad as possible. I think if you can afford two boards get a Zap & a Zot. If you can get out the back on bigger days the Zot would be far superiour with the single fin than the Zap as it would spin out too easily.

Thanks Freshie, seems to be a reoccuring theme with the zot - barrelling waves. I have a good break down here where i am, always barrelling, even at 1ft, suited for the zot i think. I’m going around the 5’6 mark, so we’ll see how it goes. Good luck with that new board - looks like a beauty!

Well, it was worthwhile posting as we got a ride comparison between a Zap and a Zot from Justin.

I knew the line “Not everyone’s cup of tea” would pique some readers curiousity.

Hmmmm. have been looking at grabbing a Zot as have been toying with getting a McCoy but reading the threads on this site no one has come out and said they love this board, toying with getting a Campbell Bros Bonzer but the Sydney surf may not be clean/hollow enough.....anyway interesting reading.

Side note: Marc is a champion guy and just loving life and passionate about boards, I didnt get why the other chap through a hissy fit.

I was pretty close to getting a zot. a good mate of mine walked out with a 6ft zot, whereas i ordered one of the new zap models that have just come out. I’m yet to have a turn on his board, but he is loving it. When it came down to it, the zot just didn’t fill the whole i had in my quiver. i want a 5’6 zot, but i needed a 6’0 board for 3ft-6ft and didn’t want to get into a single fin just yet. Have you ahd any single fin experience? if so - you may as well grab one! But mccoy boards aren’t for everyone - they do have a period of adjustment, and some people just can’t work them out, or the board isn’t suited to them, but if you are willing to perservor they are an excellent addition to your quiver.

Marc is a legend and he is besotted with the zot and i agree, his passion is great fun when you’re in with him talking about boards.

p.s i haven’t heard ‘hissy fit’ in ages, perfect though : )

Side note:  Do you want to talk about surfboard designs or open up another can of worms?  And that's " threw " a hissy fit...not through a hissy fit. Things have calmed down and you come on here with your two post taking more snips?  I learned a valuable lesson about character and neurosis from the entire episode. I should have ignored it and let it take it's natural course, but it has allowed me to permanently move on from support for over over 30 years.

The super wide, super wide tailed, more narrow nose, thick boards are not for everyone. In fact, my experience has shown me that they work best for the over 200 crowd who are still aggressive surfers, but can't find performance equipment that will float them properly and work. Add to that that most surfers today not familiar with singles, let alone wide tailed singles and many just don't want to put the time in to get them dialed in.   I think some under the weight I mentioned that like them if they go really short.   I think the Lazor Zap in it's original outline like the ones seen on Geoff's site are his best ever design period. Of the nuggets I think the Pot belly, Stumpy and All around are his best designs.  I think the rest are just names on a bit of onion paper and mostly just variations of those three designs. But that is my opinion only. It comes not from shaping or being a shaper, but from riding these types of designs from Geoff and other shapers for most of my surfing life. For some reason all the wide tailed things just stuck with me.  More a feeling than anything else.  For balance, I think wide double enders with wide tails are more manageable for most.

You can liven up that type of outline so it performs well in more variety of waves by doing a few different things and still retain the basics of the design that make it functional..namely float and rear driven performance..  I think the total neutrality thing works great in powerful waves in the pocket.  Not so well in mush burgers unless you are willing to put the time in to learn where the gas pedal is or if it naturally suits you.

I used own a nice 7'4'' Malcome Campbell bonzer.  Nice boards.  I think they like glassy conditions better than chop.  Malcome and Duncan are both class acts and great guys..  Malcome shapes beautiful surfboards.   They have a bonzer hanging in Duncan's cafe' that Duncan told me Cheyne killed it on one time in Hawaii.

BTW: A friend sent this too me. Been looking for a picture of this board for awhile.  Cheyne with a nugget shape, not done by McCoy around the time of his movie " Scream In Blue "  1987 I think.  Cheyne himself has made some major contributions in board design even if he doesn't actually shape the boards himself. His experimentation has been the basis of many boards you are now seeing show up as " new " models.  That period of his during the late eighties produced all sorts of cool looking surf craft. A great guy, great personality with tons still left to offer the surfing world.  One of a kind.

Sorry guys..I deleted something and it bumped the thread. That was unintentional.

Marc and his wife have 5 kids and he has helped me understand a lot about my autistic grandson.

It seems that if you have enough kids you know a lot more about childern than some of the book learnt 'experts'.

Surfboards aside.... Marcs a very thoughtful and caring guy.

5 kids... jeee-zus !!

Guys,

Great balanced advice and thanks.

Re: fins set up, I ride a single from time to time and really like it but its a bit of a retro design with zero nose rocker which doesnt allow to drop to late and turn taht easily, hence the Zot nose rocker/single fin combo appealed, but I do like to surf top to bottom generally and I THINK the 6'2 Zot lengh will allow me to bottom turn and drive on an angle of some degree (i.e I would still like to snap.....still possible?).

The picture painted to me is McCoys are not for everyone (like any board type for that matter) but when you master them the love affair begins, but like a good relationship there will be bumps and adjustments along the way. I'm thinking I want to fall in love with a Zot or another McCoy board and I think my destiny is with a McCoy, I dont know why but something keeps pulling me towards them (although I just want a clear spray....).

Its interesting to look at the polarised view of McCoy.

It would be great if he designed a board a young free surfer who picked it up and ripped on it, it would blow the lid off Mccoy and put it back to its early fame however thats not McCoys style and that why he is loved.

Guys thanks for the advice technical and other. I'm off to the planet Zot.

No doubting  solosurfer has been a loud voice for geoff mccoy surfboards. We have all read pages of glowing tributes to Geoff mccoy and his surfboards written by solo .  The trouble seems to be from what i have read on swaylocks, the guy has misrepresented him self and his mccoy connection  and seemingly promoted his own boards and the boards shaped by greg pautsch . Have a look at the my new nugget thread  there are pictures of a surfboard that is a   complete   Geoff mccoy copy from start to finish, spray ,decal, and all . i wonder does he or greg send mr mccoy  a cheque  or at least a thankyou or even a xmas card as gratitude for the revenue they raise selling boards  under the mccoy  label.
Geoff's hero worshipping lap dogs just won't quit in spite of knowing absolutely nothing about what they are talking about.   There has been no misrepresentation. There is no further need to defend myself. It's all there way back in the archives here.  There is one person who has been paranoid, egotistical and untruthful or..misinformed in this entire episode and it's not Greg Pautsch or I.  There are mods and others close to the situation who know some of the truth.  The rest appear to be love struck fools attempting to gain brownie points.

Yes...I do plan to continue to use G.P. as the relationship goes back a long way and he is one of the best shapers and folk in this business. Again...a long history and none here know a thing about it.  He has been doing the label since the late seventies.

BTW: For someone claiming to have invented or reinvented certain things...I see little credit given to obvious influences.  Hence the Cheyne picture from 87 when the claim for the Nugget outline was early 90's..the Hobie logo, the Velzy and other things. So what? His contributions are what they are and there have been many.   Some of you need to just start believing there is NO conspiracy or anyone attempting to hurt the non contributor to swaylocks in question, ride his coat tails or harm him in any way.   Just a bunch of Hooey.

Does any of this matter? I still believe in the design and it's a fact that most folks in America are not going to pay the price to get the boards done in Australia because of the dollars involved.  It's also a fact that the name in question get's lot's of free publicity here by lap dogs starting arguments that don't matter.  I have posted thousands of post here on various subject and contributed to this forum which serves the surf community around the world well as a platform. There is tons of information here.

I see no reason for this being a stage for folks whose only contribution is spam or stir up trouble. Heck..I don't mind criticism either if it's well thought out and written..but it's best to bring facts rather than innuendo.   I don't see Simon whinning about folks copying him or others being out to get him and etc.  The threads don't need to be locked...the trouble makers need to be banned and post that are off subject deleted with a warning.

BTW: Drifter: Quit attempting to ruin the surfers stoke who posted his board here.  He has no part in any of this until you came on with your B.S. on that thread.

Slander: a malicious, false, and defamatory statement or report.

So i guess just insult anyone that dares to question you , then attempt to derail  the debate by  by going on about simmon.  So i  by that logic the connection we can draw is everyone rips of simmon so it's alright for you to rip off mr mccoy  . As for the guy that bought the mccoy replica well he obviously got a good board just not really a mccoy ... it's a pautsch ..

write what you want, Insult me as much as you feel the  need  but the only people you are fooling is your unsuspecting customers

Oh i remind the swaylocks readers have a look at the statement from geoff mccoy in the industry talk section.  I think that makes it all very clear.
Alrighty then...you sure showed me and I'm sure everyone here on swaylocks feels indebted to you for bringing out all this secret information about my character.  I hope you get your brownie points when you report in.  It's a dead issue. I don't have McCoys produced. I simply sell them the way I always did through my shops with the same person most here in America have associated with that label for years.  I have no more association with the person in question and wish him nothing but the best.  If the person in question and G.P. make some other arrangements in the future..that will be fine also.

From what I understand , Greg Pautsch is entitled to use the name from a prior agreement between he and Geoff. [This is certainly none of my business so apologies to all concerned] ..... Why he does ?, I have no idea because if I could make a board like that my name would be all over it !   Revolution - Solo , as a surfboard retailer sells them for him. They must be good friends because this is where Solo gets the majority of ill-will directed toward him (and is vulnerable to attack) but continues to sell them anyway.

The 'Cheyne Horan' surfboards are nothing to do with McCoy surfboards, and as can be seen from the yellow San-Juan nugget shape in the earlier post, you might ask how many competition successes (and the credit for design) does Geoff enjoy that he had absolutely nothing to do with !

As for having an opinion on what the agreement is /was between Geoff and Noel ...Well..who really knows, but I would imagine it would be like interfering in a family domestic dispute ..No thanks.

Once again , this is none of my business , but purely what I have learned from what is already on record on this forum.

Cornholio , The Astron Zot wasn't my cup of tea but the potbelly is (& variants). It would be good to try before you buy with the McCoy's in general as they most certainly would not be to everyone's idea of how a board should go.

Before I bought my first McCoy I had read all of Solosurfer's (the other chap) posts about them, and I think he has done more for Geoff's business interests (exposure) than Geoff could ever possibly repay. I personally thought the  post from Geoff was petty and only appeared  after someone else had done all the heavy lifting for his business interests in the U.S.  If Marc can be made a saint,so could Solo (Noel)

There are a few people that post on Swaylocks that act as if they were deputised 'mods' for 'Geoff McCoy surf Design' and close down any thing that isn't a glowing 'puff piece' (by being abusive and aggressive) so don't be overly influenced by them either.

Cornholio - I second Mono’s advice - if you can, give one a try before you buy - but try it more than once. It won’t be like any other board you’ve ever tried but these designs have changed my surfing life and, at 42 and 225 pounds (102 Kilos), to be riding a 6-6 and turning like never before, is saying something. This from a guy who was more or less purely a longboarder prior to riding a Nugget.

Have a blast, free yourself of any preconceived notions (“Free Your Mind”), and “Have a Good Surf.”
