Add wood to skin increase is stiffness. Increase stiffness of skin increase stiffness of board. Stiff board deform less and spring back faster that’s the stiff feeling. Stiff deck is good against dent and buckling, with a “flexible” bottom (and not to stiff rails too) you get a nice feeling and a durable board for me.
I never understand the feel of a boards spring back. I can feel a boards flex, because of the turn it makes. A longer board developinging a tighter rocker curve during a turn. But when people talk of feeling how the board springs back, I dont get it.
No matter how fast I turn, or end a turn, the board will always return to neutral flex much faster than my turn ending. What am I missing?
I was feeling the rebound off the bottom and in turn, off the top. But the intense flex rebound came when bottom turning, on my backhand, as there was a cross wave, more of a wobble pushing across the wave, the wave was a right and the crosswave was going in the same direction. My local wave so I know how boards feel with the increased bottom pocket, excelerate and hold off the bottom. You know like a backwash pushing accross the wave.
Anyway the board flexed then wanted to release quickly while on rail (i ride small boards so most of the rail is usually burried) , giving the sling shot feeling. (extra stress on the body knees etc), then because the rise was so fast, off the top tended to be late.
The board is light and has a lot of spring (when bounced on the concrete)
If I put the veneer on the bottom it wouldn’t be under compression rather a stretsch of the veneer (for lack of a better word).
Big time to internet anti-hero. Ok what exactly is Big time?? You? NO, nar…what you got brother? and anti-hero, geezzz, Its what you do that rally counts. What YOU got?
BTW this place is a stress release for me so… Be my guest, what You really Know.
…Or. Do you just want to fuck this thread up? its a simple question about flex…
BTW. To me, rubbing some sprog shit on the bottom of guys boards that are 98% of the time, relying on the wave rather then the surfer, for speed. Thats Freak’n BS. But It has it’s Place!
But it is an “internet forum” after all. Theres gold inhere if you decipher through all the CRAP!
What about the sling shot acceleration out of the turn?. That is what I definitely notice with my JD fish, coming out of the turn with what feels like extra speed. I thought that zing out of turns was the return of the parabolic timber stringers. What ever it is I love it haha
flex in surfboard is subjective and describe by feeling. Mechanicaly you need distant opposed forces to get flex, your feet push the board and water under your feet push the board by reaction, no real distance so no real flex, and board are too stiff to really flex, like ski or body board for exemple.
But like many i try boards (tufflite) that feel stiff and i have some old PU/PE that fell soft. I made some balsa or PVC compsand deck stringerless that was flexible but feel stiff, guys of salomon find that a hard deck give a stiff feeling under feet.
For me the best explanation of flex is BenjaminThompson theory of vibration (dynamic flex). Damping (mostly springback speed) characterizes the popiness feeling of board. I can feel it (i think) when i pump the board in trim line: to much pop and i can control, its’ like board bounce, no pop the board don’t react to pump.
Unlike Mcding I have enjoyed your thread. It isn’t easy making boards at any level, especially if depending on them for one’s sustenance. This is a tough time economically for most people, and of course everyone wants to be a shaper, so that only makes it harder for those who are. Isn’t everyone here an expert at board design and production?
Got to say the “One for the Ghettorat” thread was a low for me, but I have grown since then and it looks like Yorky has too; Oh, some of the stuff McDing threw at me used to get under my skin, but in a thread way back, he mentioned he was “low t” and then I had no idea what he was talking about, but still he has made me laugh almost to death with his sport of ripping the Aussies.
Its kind of exciting around here when someone flies off the handle and loses it; who knows it may be my turn next…
