ok i want to make a retro fish, but i am 6’4 and the smaller fishes just dont fell right. so i was thinking about making a 6’6 or a 6’8 by 22 1/2 by 3. does anyone have any more sugestions or am i going to run into problems trying to make one this big.
if thats going to be an issue what other retroey boards could i make in that size range.
i ride a longboard and want to try something new. especially now that the surf is getting over here in florida
66X22.5 sounds good to me - keep your tail @16.5 " wide if you want easy wave entry. I made a similar one myself earlier in the year — goes excellently in everything up to 1.5 OH
Turbo - the fish was made with a good friend (we drew up the template together and I gave him a few pointers and helped him glass it etc) - like you he was longboarder and wanted something different – this was his first board and it’s turned out to be truly superb fun - catches anything and goes really well. He now rides it as a twin fin and finds it amazingly loose
Sorry 'bout the pic quality it’s the only one I’ve got of it…
thanks for all the great advice, i ahve been so amped on building a fish that i have been looking at baords all day. i have noticed that all the fish models nose and tail width is about the same. so heres what i am going to do
6’6 16 by 22 by 16 1/4. by 3 thick. and keep the wide point about four inches in front of the middle
i should be asking questions soon about fin placement.
Did a 6-6 fish (my problem is age -54- not size) 16 3/4 x 22 1/4 (5"up from center) x 16 3/4. 3 1/8 thick. 4 3/4 nose rocker, 1 3/4 tail.
Fish tail is 10 3/8 tip to tip, crotch 5 3/8 deep. Used the FCS TF1 fins (4 7/8 base x 5 1/2 high) set 12" up from long point toed in about 5/16 with 3 degree+ cant. Flat bottom with fairly soft rails until the last 16"or so which I hardened up a bit.
It’s a fun board for east coast waves and I am a convert to the 6-9 A. It really is the “Swiss Army Knife of blanks” like the blurb in the Clark catalog says.
Check out the archives, if you haven’t already, for some of Herb’s fish and look for Ramon’s fish too which inspired me to do mine.
I agree with LeeDD, go wider instead of longer. I’ve got a homemade 6’8" fish and although it workes great I could have gone much shorter. If you go ‘long’, make sure you thin out the nose from the chest area and forward.
I made a 6’8 fish for myself just to try out. I find it catches waves as easy as my longboard and it is extremely fast. I have a quad set-up on mine and it rides great. I think my tail is 18 inches and my nose is 17.
Your numbers are good in my opinion. I’ve made a few with those approx. numbers. They worked great. Same experience as Austin S(without his amazing lams, of course). You can see some of them if you type in “homemade fish quiver,” in the search box.
Thanks for the compliment rooster. Here is another one i literally just finished today. Its only a 6’2 but really wide so i felt it was still relevant.
Its a resin swirl turbo. Basically black and white swirled in one cup and poured out in a star pattern. In the open spots i just did a regular resin swirl to fill them up. then i did a star pattern inlay and filled with a light blue. Pretty much the same as a regular resin swirl(like this picture) but a little twist.
