Whad up, this week i decieded im going to whip up a little small wave
sled, and I really like the demsions and thickness of the new C.I sperm
whale but I’m not really looking for a stub with a super rad squash
tail. I think I want something that is closer in demsions to the sperm
whale but with a much more biscut outline. (bigger rounded pin tail and
pulled in nose) I basically want to shape a sperm whale with a pulled in
outline and 5 fin setup. I’m a pretty decent surfer and want a fatter
smaller board that can cruize through tiny 1-2 ft surf and paddle easy
but can be put on rail easily and release off the top when the waves are
small but fun. Im about 145 lbs and really cant decide on a thickness
and a rocker proflie. I wanna go as thin as possible but I still want
this board to have some volume so I can ride some really tiny but fast
waves. Right now I came up with these demensions 5’4 x 18 7/8th x 2 3/4
(3.75" nose rocker/1.5" tail rocker) and this template that is slightly
off haha.
This is only my second build so any advice
would be sick (especially tips on how to get a smoother glass finish around the rails so i dont have to sand as much this time). My first board was a 5’6 little performance shortboard
but with less entry rocker and a good bit of foam through the whole
deck. (around .95 inches in the tail and .75 inches in the nose).
Anyways the board is sick, super loose, and works great but isn’t really
the small wave machine I was hoping for probably since it went so small
and only kept the thickest part around 2.25 (I dont really know how
thick it is for sure, I barely used measurements and had no template for
this board becuase I just wanted to see if I could create something
that rides)
take your and make sure you like the way your board looks every step of the way, do each step correctly so the next step goes smoothly. start with a good template, your outline will be better, a good outline means easier to shape, easier to shape easier to glass, the better the lam the better the HC, good hc = easy sand. take your time do it right the first time so you dont have to spend more time fixing it.
Rob, not sure where you are located but do you have access to a surf shop where you can go and look at surfboards made by other builders? It might help you get a better eye and feel for what clean flowing outlines should be. Feel the rails and run your hands around some boards taking note of the way the shaper distributed the volume and especially the way the nose and tail widths flow with the outline. If you are trying to make something similar to a CI Sperm Whale or Biscuit go to their website and take note of the dimensions. Watch some shaping and glassing videos, too. Post your results. Good luck!
Tis what Aliens ride, on Jupiter, no seriously you need to flow your curves more, you can do it yourself or draw around boards. Looks like you got you glassing done well though for a first timer.
haha well thanks for the input bradda. my 1st board is dope and ya its all assymetrical and has a rediculously pulled in nose becuase i made a couple mistakes with the saw but it still rides just as good as any little performace fish ive ever owned. Rocker profile is way to flat for a board like that though and i fucked up the hotcoat on the bottom of that board. But as far as I see it that first one just gave me confidence to keep making them since it works pretty well even though its not the most aesthetically pleasing thing to look at. I also built that one without a stand as the pictures show haha and in dirty ass garage. But now i made myself a stand, cleaned my garage, bought some more shit, and ill use a real 1/2 template made of the plywood instead of that stupid cardboard one. Ill post pictures along the way i should be going to buy the blank today. Anyone have an idea for a good thickness though and rocker profile for a board like this? Width a foot from the nose and a foot from the tail?
So i have no clue what a suffermag prankster is and my first board wasn’t supposed to look like the sperm whale or anything really, i made it with no template. The rags have dried epoxy resin on them from glassing my first board over them not oil
I guess some people just look at the pictures and try to infer what the text says, I actually do it a lot too on here no worries
Hey Rob I didn't get it until I went back and re-read your initial posts - and I did read it before, but missed it somehow. The Biscuit / Sperm Whale is what you'd like to build for your next board, the photos you posted are of your first board.
One reason for this is that your template for your Biscuit / Sperm Whale board actually looks more like your first board than a Biscuit. Its the nose.
BTW, if you make your template out of masonite it can be easily sanded to blend the curves. Just make half a template, from the stringer to the rail, then use the same template for both halves - that way they'll be a perfect match.
If I understand what Ray is saying, he suspects your are from another forum (http://forum.surfermag.com/forum/), and posting here in jest.
So im glad thats cleared up and im sorry my first post was probably super confusing. The first board was really a cheap experiment to see what i could do with minimal tools, it was never meant to look like any of the channel islands boards.
anyways for the 2nd board i made a new template out of plywood and cut the blank and started trueing it up. how thick should i leave it at the nose at tail? any good ideas for the rails?
Title says something about a whale...photos do not reflect title...

You want advice? Dump the surf speak rapper ghetto talk.....Your first board is "sick" but not in the way you claim.
Someday you will have to sit down for a job interview....I see through your BS......are you ready for that real job? I'm really happy you cleaned up the workshop.......:)
