I just got a 7’4" Anderson Bojorquez. I haven’t gotten to ride it much, but is seems to ride as advertised - you have to surf it off the rails, rather than pivot from the tail. It’s a very different feel, and you do have to be rather conscious of what you’re doing. It’s somewhat difficult to ride for me. I have a 7.5" True Ames L-flex fin, and the board feels to me “under finned.” I don’t know if this is the way the board is supposed to be, or if I’d get better results from a bigger fin. Generally, the board is a little hard to turn, and you have to step up and lean into the rail. If you have a perfect wave with time to set up, that’s great, but its difficult otherwise. My question is, does anyone have any experience with these boards and various types and sizes of fins? My other board is a 9’2" Lauren Yater, with a 9.5" Yater “rudder” type fin. (Also True Ames.) It’s probably the best board I’ve ever owned, and I’ve had a lot of boards, and has a wonderfully smooth and responsive ride, and I think some of that has to do with the fin. I’m tempted to put a smaller size Yater rudder on the Bojorquez. Any input would be appreciated.
Noooooooooooooo! No rudders!! Depending on the tail width, 9 to maybe 9.5 Liddle Flex Fin (Try getting one from Greg - Liddlesurfboards.com). The other thing is that you have to dial the fin in with the board. Depending on your anal quotient, you can try starting at the back of the box, then move it to the middle and then to the front, or start at the back and move it up in 1/4 inch increments. You’ll find a very narrow spot where the board just comes alive…It takes forever but is well worth the effort. Hopefully KP will jump in and give you a head start with a fin setting. You got yourself a sweet ride!
I’ll forget about the rudder. I measured the tail, and I think it was 15"; maybe 15.5". It sounds like the 7.5" fin might be too small.
as Lee said, 9" l-flex from true ames(or better yet, a true Liddle fin, 9").stick it in the middle of the box.I suspect it will end up being placed at 13" plus or minus a quarter of an inch.
Wow. Now I don’t know where I got the idea my fin was 7.5", but I just measured it, and it is 9". It’s about 11" from the tail. I think I’ll try moving it up.
Matts right start in the middle of the box and go foward a little at time. Let the rail do the work, front foot down ,even pressure bank it over and unweight a little and wammo.
dont change it every time you go out, change it SEVERAL times when you go out, carry a dime , and stick it to your wax bar and put it in your baggies, put small marks on your fin box with a sharpie pen, move it every 4-5 waves. i envy you ,ive always wanted a bojorquez.
i purchased a 7-4 bojorquez from anderson surfboards a few months ago and had an awkward adjustment period for a few sessions. then i finally figured it out; surf forward and lean into your turns. thank you scott for a magical board. are there any videos out there featuring riders on these hull shapes?
Hey there is a new Bojorquez on the way ,its a board Steve rode in the 80s .Andreson just tweeked it, updated rocker a little and thickness placement prototype is 6’5’’ 18n 22.1/4w 17t 3 fins redX boxes shallow 2 1/4 swallowtail. The thing just burns in small to med waves. Its also easyer to Ride than the single fins. You get that hulltrim thing but with the fin placements you can really turn quicker, sharper, pop the top easyer FUN! The bummer is I cant get Scott to give it back hes been riding it all week. Also had Scott make me a 9’0’’ Bojorquez and its like a Yaterspoon and Stubby combo you can really loadup those flexfins on this thing. If you can get a Trueaims 9’'L flex in G10 I love those, they have a different flex pattern than the fiberglass ones.
Go to allaboutsurf.com then go to arcives look at Six feet to Fit punchup the photos to the left and there is some nice footage of the Liddle crew from the Early 70s.
That site is great.I want a new one of those boards!I have an old g&s that surfs like that but has no stringer.I don’t want to snap it.Good footage of an era that changed so quickly.
Shanon is right but instead of a dime go buy a wonder bolt which makes it easier to adjust the fin while you are in the water. If the fin is tight a gentle kick with your foot (better be wearing boots) should move the fin around. You’ll know when you find the sweet spot. You might have to try a couple different fins but don’t be afraid. Sometimes you find fins that you think won’t work, work great and vice versa. There lies the fun of experimenting.
About 10 years ago I brought a Liddle egg into Anderson’s factory for repairs. Scott got a good laugh as he looked over the board. Called it a thing as I recall. Sounds like those “things” have become a profit center. By the way, there are three or four Bojorquezes and a beautiful Liddle in the Beach House in Santa Barbara as of this afternoon. Roger
yeah, i know the “thing” story from Scott. He kinda knows about 'em, but would still snicker and ask why.(Scott, by the way is an outstanding sahper/glasser who really is willing to do anything). He was recently introduced to a “new” model Borojquez-as KP postead elsewhere, he wont put it down.I think he’s been convereted!
I dropped a nice new 7’10’'at Waveline in Ventura yesterday.KP.
Hey - while in the Beach House - did you happen notice if they had any used Brom Fish. I want a Brom Fish but can’t afford a new one right now – thinking they may have some used at the Beach House – they did several months back and stupid me didn’t go for it. It’s a 2 hour trip up there – I guess I could just call - wondering. Thanks.
try clyde beatty’s showroom shop in sb he has some once in a while.Maybe ck his rocketfishes also??
No used Broms at the Beach House as of Sunday- An odd used 6’8 Liddle in there. Down rails, pulled nose, glassed side fins and a center box, really heavy. Didn’t know he made anything like that.
Is anderson glassing the same guys who do dirty glassing?? i was going to get a board from the dirty guys, but someone told that they were the same glassers. just fixed a couple anderson boards, and were weak and sand through on rails near tail… just dont wanna get a board that soaks up water b4 i ding it… thanks Chris,
