We need boards that can do stuff like this! Remember not everyone can surf the latest pencil thin needle nosed shred stix…and these boards CAN float a rhinoceros! Also, work well for most people… even this gentleman has one!:0
When I saw boards look n like the same old thing yr aftee yr - I decided on trying a --Sims out! I geuss I finally saw something that I overlooked before.
As for building my egg shape, it’s on the back burner. Also, I’m too busy learning how to run my new -SKIL 100 planer. Did you ever get your mods started? Remember what - Cleanlines pointed out? I did. Are you still werk n on dat plastic…or something like that. Best tip I got to date! Listen to the experts.
Keep the tail wider than the nose, round the tail off, add some tail rocker and add quad fins. I dunno if it’s mini Simmons inspired but i have a josh Dowling 5’4" ( search for pics ) It’s for tiny to head high. It ain’t from the 50’s and it fucking flies and makes tiny waves crazy fun. If I wasn’t injured the longboard would be long gone.
Beerfan - I’ll try that. I’m going to get two blanks when I order them. I might get them custom. I think I plan to build one standard, and the other modern. Shaping is personal as it is surfing. I geuss that means: we can shape whatever we envision in our heads, test theory in the surf, and build from there. Atleast that’s what I heard thet did during the short board era. According to
Hope your knee heals well. I feel you there - I just injured my spine or my shoulder picking up Dad. My Dad quit walking a yr ago, but we’re trying to help him get more mobility.I’ll be ok, but I better lift w my stronger arm/side next time…I prob can’t surf for a mos! I must have pinched a nerve. It’s healing, but slow. Make sure you get plenty of proper nutrition. My x gf give me tips on that. I’m starting to eat better foods, and drink more water. I’ll get the blanks and cloth I forgot in storage and get going. Hope you get your knee back in shape.
Bill- I got ideas off you…what do you think if I sprinkle beach sand onto the resin before it dries? Or put it in hot coat? Would it develop uber speed? Just thinkin about it.
Hey Bill - I think its pretty safe to say he was just funnin’ you back for the Skil 100 crack you made. I thought you both were pretty funny.
Note to all: Sure be nice if we could keep this thread focused on the mini-sims shape under discussion, and avoid the train-wreck route this go-around. :-)
The VERY FIRST Mini Simmons, was done by Bob Simmons himself. It is reported that he made several shorter boards, right on down to six feet. As you know Bob Simmons died at Windansea in 1954. In 1957 Alan Nelson had a Balsa board, just 5 feet long, that was used as a stand up shorebreak board, complete with half moon twin fins. I even borrowed it once, in 1958, after Ronald Patterson had been riding it in the shorebreak. It was clearly inspired by the board designs of Bob Simmons. So, the claims of Bauguess, are bogus, IMO. Alan Nelson, gets the nod from me, over Bauguess.
You’re over thinking it. Find a junk longboard, cut it in half and glass on fins. You can always add concaves later or reshape the whole thing. But I too am ready to see you go nuts with this thing and start a sick ass build thread. There’s a template for sale for only 50$ in the surfshop, that you should check out. It would be a great starting point.
actually, I like your idea! But I’ll have to check the flea market, surf shop etc …
So, far I simplified it. I’m simply going to hack off 5" off the tail to flatten it at rear, I’ll simply flip nose up w surform, and I’ll plane in a single to dub concave. Toss on down rails, clean up and take it out for a test drive. Been busy w job search, interviews and tests. Passed and am awaiting hire. Now I can crank out these thing’s! It’ll be sick for sure…I think Mr Tate is correct. Did more research, and these are meant to be small. Also, I’ve ridden a 5’3" or 5’4" kneeboard n stand up, and you can literally wing around these things waaaay more than on a psb… it’s literally rocket like on all levels. You actually have to experience it. Nuff said, I’ll get one built as soon as I get a blank. Definitely doin a single to double concave.
Hell I’ll give you a blank, if you’ll make it a build thread with Pics. Show these guys what you can do out there on the lanai. I’ve got a perfect Mini Sims blank you can have. I’ll drop it off on my way thru next week. Lowel
Bill - the original Sims wasn’t it a single fin? Ok, I admit it, I don’t know. That said, Mr Baugeuss invented his own version. I’ll say this, he shapes more than most of us - so he deserves respect.
Bill - ty for sharing the history. Bill - I think I’m doin a dub ender for it. But as told, I decided I have to saw off 5-6" off the tail end of blank in order to flatten the tail. Also, set my pivot point more in tail section.I dunno, I’m going w stuff that works for me vs what doesn’t. Sound k.
cool! I can do a build thread! I really need a digital camera also! Maybe I ask my sister if I can borrow her camera. Lowel - my bro says I can glass in his storage unit! Bring a extra blank if you want to shape also k. Pm you at noon tommorow.
The only thing I have to do is clear out a spot n tak on sum wood on my stands. I picked up my cloth, but ur right about doin 6 oz bottom. I’m thinking about maybe doin single deck + deck patch? If I go wider on laps I’ll get ample strength… run deck patch to center? Lowel- here’s my drawing. This is how I want it. PIC.
