Cerritos College - Open House II

Thanks grunion…I apprecate the help!

If everyone would either post here or on the Events and Happenings as to what they can bring, everyone will have a good idea of what is being provided as well as what might be needed. We still need the sodas, water, ice, mustard, etc…

ALSO:::Today I talked with Hank Johns from Graphite Master, and he said he would be able to attend the first half of the forum. GREAT NEWS!! Thanks Hank! We will also be doing a demo on hot wire cutting as well as hands-on lamenating with various resins.

Thanks!!

Ken

Infusion my arse…as I’m sure some of you would like to do…one of you have a degree or something? What the hell is wrong with a squeeegie?

Yeah!

We ALL have degrees and black belts, we’re gonna kick YOUR arse…

Practice, practice, practice.

(pictures later)

Really…All these high-tech composites processes…gunna change the surfing world…we eat Burgers…ah the smell of styrene in the morn

Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to introduce myself again. I’m Terry Price, Director of the Composite Training Center at Cerritos College.

This will be our second surfboard construction forum and this time we will be concentrating on more advanced techniques and materials, but we will still cover the basics if there are any beginners.

Here is what we have scheduled so far:

9:00 am - Resin Infusion Demonstration

We will be showing how to use RTM to glass both sides of a board at once as well as foam core fins and fin panels.

10:00 am - Several surfboard material suppliers will be on hand showing everything from the basics to the latest in exotic foams and reinforcements.

10:15 am - Greg Loehr from Resin Research

Greg will be doing a presentation on his epoxy resin. He will show a demonstration by glassing a board with his resin.

12:00 pm - BBQ Lunch

1:00 pm - Ken Ebert from Segway Composites

Ken will be presenting his hollow carbon fiber surfboards.

1:30 pm - Tour of composites department

I will be giving a tour of our facility, showing the equipment and materials available to our students.

2:00 pm - Hands on demonstrations

Here is where you can try out any of the many different methods, such as:

Hot wire foam cutting

Vacuum bagging

Wet lay-up

Prepregs

Water jet cutting

and anything else that we have available.

During this time you will also be able ask questions with all the presenters.

2:30 pm - Surfboard contest

Trophies will be awarded. I’ll post again with the various categories.

Everyone that attends will receive a certificate of attendance, and we will have a drawing where we give away some free classes. Also, we will have a questionaire where you can request discussion topics and presenters for future seminars.

It’s your tax dollars that pay for this facility, so we’re here for you. If you want to learn some new techniques or just need a place to shape, glass or sand your board, we can accommodate your needs. This is a great neutral venue to have presentations from vendors as well as pro’s on current topics.

Although this Seminar will be geared specifically towards surfboards, our facility has the equipment and materials available for any kind of project you can dream up. We’ve had students come to us with the whole spectrum of projects — everything from boats, snowboards, skimboards, car and motorcycle parts, architectural models, product prototypes, and so on. So if you have other projects besides surfboards, you’ll get a good overview of the possibilities waiting for you at the Composites Training Center.

Hope you all can make it, should be fun, as it will be good to meet all of you for a face-to-face discussion. Give us a call if you can attend and we’ll get you a parking pass.

Best regards,

Terry Price

A few more photos.

For those that aren’t familiar with RTM. How would you like to glass a board without ever having to touch the resin? No mess? No smell, even with polyester resin? And at the same time, getting optimum glass to resin ratios, with no air bubbles.

If you live in an apartment, you could glass your board right on the kitchen table, without bumming out your wife or neighbors. No drips and no VOC’s.

RTM has been used for years in aerospace and boat building, but it’s just the beginning for surfboards. Some of the technology still needs to be adjusted for surfboards, but I’m confident that if enough people get involved, we will be getting perfect glass jobs with zero effort.

Daddio, GlennShotwell and I will be giving RTM demos on foam blanks, foam core fins, and fin panels. If there is anything else you’d like to see using RTM, let me know and I will try to set it up in time for the seminar this Saturday.

I was very disappointed last time that your demo did not go off. It was one of the main reasons I had attended. This session sounds a lot more technical (read that as interesting).

I apologize for that demo not going off as planned due to jury duty.

The good thing is that we will be trying more than one RTM demo this time. I have two foam blanks, one urethane and one XPS, which we can cut in half to see how much resin was absorbed into the foam. We might also have some 3# EPS that we can try also.

We are also trying to get some resin infusion film in time for the seminar, but it’s pretty hard to get, so we’ll have to see what happens.

This session will show some more advanced processes, but will also be more hands on. You’ll be able to try some of the different methods, instead of just watching someone else do it.

If there is any new materials or processes that you would like presented in the future, be sure to let us know and we’ll get it into the next seminar. Also, any speakers you’d like to hear.

Surfboard Forum Approaches!!!
As Saturday's Surfboard Forum gets closer, there are additional details that can be posted.
Greg Loehr will be doing a shaping demo as well as a discussion and demo sealing the blank and Resin Research epoxy systems fiberglass lay-up. Watching this guy shape is amazing! We're keeping Greg busy!!!
"Swaylock" will talk about Swaylock's history, present and future...
Segway Composites will provide a demo on hot wire foam cutting of an EPS surfboard blank. There will be a "hands-on" opportunity after.
Hank Johns, Graphite Master will discuss fabrics...glass, graphite, KEVLAR...
Segway Composites will also discuss the KOLSTOF hollow carbon fiber surfboard and it's sandwich construction and honeycomb core.
Bill Thrailkill will discuss surfboard evolutions...
"Kenz", "daddio" and Glen Shotwell will infuse several test examples, and possibly do a "hands-on" fin infusion process. Do you have a fin design in mind?
Terry Price will host the forum as well as an introduction to the shop facilities available to students. Maybe you should consider joining us in a class or two!
Please bring your surfboard for the "SURFBOARD CONTEST" Terry is having some trophies made, and should be quite fun. The last contest had winners for , as best as I can remember, oldest, most technical, best looking, best overall....and more!!! Segway Composites will also be donating a EPS foam surfboard blank as one of the prizes.
We still need some commitments on sodas, water, napkins, condiments for the hamburgers, etc...
Please don't forget to RSVP with Cerritos which will help on the "head count".
This should turn out to be Great! Don't be left out! There are people coming from as far away as San Francisco!!! How about Hawaii???
See ya there!!!
Ken

I just got back from Hawaii and was directed to this post, in my course of digging out. But, I just wanted to offer bringing a few flats of soft drinks and some snacks, if that hasn’t already been covered.

Yeah, ditto on Tom’s offer. Let us know what you still need in terms of food, drinks, plates, etc…

Keith & tomatdaum…

Hawaii…why would you come back?

Thanks! As no one else has offered at this time, It would be great if you could bring like a 12 pk or more of sodas and maybe some bottled water in an ice chest. I suspect it will be hot!!

If everyone would post what they are going to bring, then everyone else would know as well.

As for a head count… don’t have any good numbers as yet, but it seems to be in the area of thirty to forty at the moment. Hope more folks sign up!!!

Thanks Again…

Ken

I’ll bring a flat of Coke and one of drinking water. I’ll also bring a Costco pack of hot dogs and maybe some sausage. I’ve got one decent size picnic cooler I can fill with ice. But, someone will need to bring a BB-Q potatoe salad a couple more coolers and condiments.

Ken, you still need me to bring my gas grill right? That, and some resin infusion supplies.

tomatdaum… Great!!! Thanks!!

Glen… Yes! please bring your grill and infusion supplies. Can we use the grill for the infusion? Nevermind…If there is anything I can provide, please let me know. Greg has another gallon of the RTM resin for the demo.

Thanks!

Ken

I’ll bring a cooler full of drinks & ice, some stuff to grill and some condiments. And paper plates.
