Cerritos College - Open House II

Quote:

Can we use the grill for the infusion?

Acutally Greg’s epoxy worked just fine without heating it, it ramps up real quick! But keeping the heat up could insure that everything is primo when we pull the stuff out of the bag at the end of the Open House!

Update:

Brad from Foam E-Z will be there with product give-aways. He will be bringing a blank to give away, as well as T-shirts.

I can bring the condiments, katsup, mustard, mayo, relish. if there is any other condiments sombody can think of speek up, and I will grab it while I am at the store.

Shall we dip the marshmallows?

Oh man, I’m gonna be out of town.

Wait a minute…

why I oughta.

Almost finished the shaping side lights for the eps blank shaping demo!

Now for the infusion fins… some balsa and high density foam should do nicely. And the CTC lam… I’m bringing the shaping racks, Ken (E)???

Was there anything else, you guys??? Damn ADD…

daddio…

Thanks! If you can bring shaping racks for the demo, that would be a great help. Mine are glued to the floor! We can use flashlights for the side lights!

Maybe headlights? I think Greg could shape in the dark!

For those that may be interested, attached is a schedule for the classes at Cerritos. If you would like to learn more about glassing, molds, tooling, infusion, composites, and also have access to the shop, please consider attending one or more of the classes.

Yes there will be more…

I’m working on the pictures and synopsis, but I’ll need some help cause I ran out of batteries and am missing pictures of the BBQ and Bill Thrailkill. Also need Gregs talk on lightweight spackle and preping the impact cloth.

To All…

I think the Surfboard Forum was a success! I would like to thank everyone that helped out with the BBQ’s, food and drink as well as all the “behind the scenes” support. A special thanks to Terry Price (Composites_Guy) and his staff, Karen Johnson for all their help. I was pleased that we were able to have Greg Loehr there to impart some of his vast surfboard and epoxy knowledge. Watching Greg shape a board is always educational, and he makes it look sooooo easy.

I would also like to thank Hank Johns, from Graphite Master, and the crew from Foam E-Z as well as the company with the fin display (Forgive me, but I don’t remember his name…sorry) The Infusion demo done by Glenn Shotwell, daddio (David), kenz (Ken), and their support. I was great to have Bill Thraikill show his boards and discuss some of the innovations he has introduced. Thanks Bill!

A special thanks also to Swaylocks (Mike Paler) for talking a bit about Swaylocks and the community it supports. It was great to be able to put a face with a name, and get to know the person and passions that drive them. Mike talked about some new upcoming features on Swaylocks, but Swaylock will talk more about that. Thanks Mike!!!

There were lots of door prizes, drawings, trophies, and networking that kept everyone occupied. The food was good, and there was lots of it! For those of you that missed the Forum, all I can say is you better plan better next time!

I’ll let others talk about the details of the forum, but I just wanted to thank everyone for their support. It was well worth the effort!

Thanks!

Ken

Thanks to Terry, Ken, Greg and everyone else for a great presentation. I came away with the conclusion that the outside 1/4 inch of a surfboard is in for some major changes in the next few years and that a strong, light, custom surfboard is not an endangered species. Can’t wait for next year!

It was great! I’d like to thank Ken (Airframe) for organizing much of the event, providing the EPS, doing the hotwire demonstration and for arranging for Greg to demonstrate shaping, sealing and laminating an EPS blank. It was great to see. That alone would have been worth it but there was so much more. Ken also shared a little about his modled honeycome graphice hollow boards, and the custom EPS blanks that he will be selling (many of which are based on Gregs rocker templates if I am not mistaken.

Thanks to Terry (Composites_Guy) for hosting the event and sharing his facility and knowledge of composites.

Thanks to the guys from foam-ez (who donated blanks and tool kits for the raffle)

Thanks to Tom w/ Red-X/Lockbox and James with RFC.

Thanks to Hank with Graphite Masters (here in LA) for talking about fabrics in composites.

Thanks to the cooks and all who brought the food and drinks.

Like Ken said there was a lot of work and support done by members of this board and it was neat to see so many people from Swaylocks together. I know there were a lot of others there but here is a list of board members that I remember names for:

Glen Shotwell (sp?), Daddio, KenZ, Keith Melville, LeeV, Greg Loehr, Mike Paler, Andrew (surform (sp?)), vern, Jim the Guiness (at the end of the event), KirkPutnam, grunion, Bill Thraikill, myself (4est), and a lot of lurkers whom I did not recognizer their logins. Many of the guys I did not know turned out to be part of our lurker crowd.

Like Mike talked about, this is a great community and I for one have really enjoyed meeting people at SA04, the Cerritos events and hooking up with a few other to surf from time to time both in Ventura, SD and SF area.

I’d like to say thanks again to Greg for all that he has given to both this event, the swaylocks community in general and to the surf industry. It is great having people like Greg and Bert and the other out side the box guys here sharing their ideas.

It was a great time. Thanks to all involved.

Great day! Firstly, Big thanks to Mr. Terry Price for opening one of the best composite training facilities in the USA for a second time to all us surfers.

And also especially to Greg Loehr for working so hard, on such a hot day, to show us his method for making an eps/epoxy surfboard from hotwiring the foam blank from a big block of eps foam, shaping the blank, spackling, to glassing it, actually doing each step right in front of us all, and taking the time to fully answer any questions along the way. Greg you’ve got a great attitude/personality and you did a great job at teaching us all yesterday.

To “Airframe” (Ken Ebert) for sharing a glimpse into what others would probably guard closely; his hard learned way of making a hollow, aluminum honeycomb/carbon fiber surfboard. I can see this as being a great way and another option for make a high-performance surfboard, maybe even a near ultimate performance surfboard for specialized conditions….lighter weight and extremely stronger than traditional PU/PER or even typical EPS/Epoxy surfboards, with the ability to control the amount and location of flex anywhere in the surfboard you want it. A look into a concept and building process that screams…surfers with an interest in composites; get your butts enrolled at Cerritos and really learn composites and take surfboard building to levels that are yet unthought-of!

Bill Thraikill, your boards are a work of art. Beautiful.

Great to see the two fin system makers, Red-X (Tom) and Lokbox (Jim), who contribute a lot to Swaylocks with fin insight, displaying and talking about their fin systems at the event.

I hope everyone gained from the VARTM/VIP (vacuum assisted resin transfer molding/vacuum infusion process) demo that we did. I feel we definitely made it look much harder and much more complicated than it really is, it is not. Thanks to Kenz, Daddio, and Yugan(sp?) for what I learned by being a part of the demo with you guys. Even with getting all the air into the process that we did by disconnecting and changing our spaghetti of vacuum tubing during the actual infusion itself, the sample surfboards and fins have a nearly void free laminate after we pulled them from the bag at the end of the day. I looked again closely this morning in the sunlight at the laminate on the two sample surfboards I brought home with me and the laminates are literally void free. Greg, that epoxy of yours works great for infusion and the open-time would be perfect for infusing a surfboard of any size.

Killer to see the prizes donated. Especially the two Clark blanks and T’s from Foam-EZ and the EPS blanks and epoxy donated by Greg’s Resin Research.

It was great meeting everyone that I did, Swaylockers are a great group. Wish I’d have had been able to meet everyone. Stoked to see Mr. Swaylock himself attend the event.

What did I take away from this event?..a deeper appreciation that “it is all good”. That there are many great ways and processes to pursue for making a surfboard. That Polyurethane foam and Polyester resin is great, that EPS foam and Epoxy resin is great, that learning about tooling(mold making) and vacuum bagging to make a hollow board is great. And it all sparks my excitement to see what processes or materials which might even be yet unthought-of will be brought to surfboard construction. And that there are some great people who are interested in surfboard construction and/or composites. I will definitely have a deeper appreciation of what I’m standing on the next time I go surfing.

A big thanks to Mr Price, what a super nice guy and someone who really is excited about what he’s doing and loves to share it with everyone. And he’s excited abot what everyone else is doing and really encourages out of the box (and into the bag) thinking.

Another big thanks to all the organizers and presenters. I had a blast and came away with a nice EPS blank as a prize in the raffle. Sweet.

Oh and Keith, about 10 minutes into the drive I remembered the board you were talking about, the 12’2" - thanks for not bringing it.

What a great day it was!

To be part of the second forum was great. Funny how Terry stated that after the fist forum, he would make the second one longer…Seems to me, we might want to make the Third one a Breakfeast, Lunch and Dinner affair.

I would like to thank Mr. Terry Price for opening one of the best composite training facilities in the the South bay. As he stated, we are all fortunate to live here in the South Bay with all the best suppliers in composites, to be had by us surfers. If I had a teacher like him while I was in school, I would have exelled at school.

I would also like to thank Greg Loehr for taking the time to show all of us his method for making an eps/epoxy surfboard. Thanks for the answers and listening to the questions of all.

I would like to Thank Ken for his time and for showing us his ways to make his boards. Its funny how in this trade, you will find shapers and glassers as well as the airbrushers that WILL NOT LET YOU SEE OR EVEN TELL YOU HOW TO DO SOMETHING. But here amoung us, we all share and even act like a family to each other.

As a trained union Carpenter, I know that there are a million ways to skin a cat, (make a surfboard) and out in the retail end of surfboard building, you will hear other shapers talk bad about others, but here…I have not seen any bad talking, just opinions and debates.

Bill Thraikill, it was great that you gave that little insight about cutting the glass on the laps, going to try that this week and by the way, your boards are a true work of art. Plus hearing about you are still surfing, I want to be like you when I get old. (Not that I am already old, Iam 41)

It was great to see two fin system makers, Red-X and Lokbox. It would be great if there is another class, that we would be able to get O’Fish’l, FCS and Futures there also.

I hope everyone gained something from the class and the demos. I feel we definitely should make a third class and if there is, I promise to make the biggest BBQ you guys have ever tasted.

Terry I would like to Thank you again for opening up your class to all of us.

Respectfully,

Surrfdaddy

I was also fortunate enough to attend. Great time and very informative. Thanks to Terry Price, Greg Loehr, Hank Johns, Ken Ebert and all of the other presenters and attendees. It was a great opportunity to learn and network. Here are a few pics that I snapped. I’m looking forward to the next one!
