Right on Swied!
I learned everything I know from Swaylocks.
I posted all the pics to hopefully help folks out the same way picture threads have helped me out.

So THAT’S what you’ve been up to! Looking very nice!!
Thanks!
Yep, this is the rocker and part of the outline that you helped me with a couple months back John.
Cheehoo Chris! Sweet Build!
Would like to give it a try at Big Sur, couldn’t get a site but coming up anyway. Look forwarding to it.
nice job Chris!
Yeeew Chrisp! Such a nice looking board, you must be stoked.
Hi Chris. Just wanted to say although I’m not a fan of the cork look the lace makes me think of my other favorite thing to do and I know how well you foil those fins and they are worth the cost of the board alone. Mike
Hey Chris,
That was definitely one nice board.
What were you impressions, and what do you want to do differently on the next one you make?
Specifically are you going to thin it out, make wider, move fins etc…
Feel free to reply however. I get stoked hearing other peoples viewpoints on evolving their designs.
Cheers,
Jason
Hey Chrisp, dug this thread up because I’m thinking of trying a five-fin setup, and had a few questions. Did you make your own fins, or purchase them from Greg Griffen? How did you figure the layout? How are they foiled? I know Swied did a five finner too, I’ll see if I can find the thread, and post the same questions. Great thread, and a great deal being offered in Surfshop, especially when you read through this thread and see what went into this build!
Just realized that Rooster, Melikefish, and Huck responded to this thread. Sorry for taking so long to respond.
Thanks for the kind words Mike! Making fins makes me happy… Not as happy as that other thing involving lace though. hahaha
Melikefish, thanks for the kind words. My impressions were that it didn’t go well under my feet… If I got a wave with a little push, it was good but the board didn’t grovel well which is what I built it for. I am a fan of Griffin’s 5 fin setup but this one just didn’t pan out for me… Regarding what I plan to do different next time, the next board I built was a twinzer. 6’0" x 20 1/4" x 2 3/8ish. USBlanks 6’2"A Red. Really big G10 handfoiled fins. THAT board is the best board I have ever surfed. Hands down… Really bummed I blew out a finbox though =(… Hoping to fix it this week. It does EVERYTHING I want it to do and more. It grovels, it carves, it snaps, it has a GAS PEDAL, it takes OH waves with ease. Everything I throw at it, it does with aplomb. That said, I plan to explore the twinzer sauce more.
Huck, I foiled the fins myself. They are no G.Griffins but, I do my best to imitate. Honestly, my handfoiled G10 wannabe Griffin fins are the best fins I’ve ever surfed. I imagine real Griffs are the bees knees… If you want placement #'s and sizes and such, PM me.
And, an update…
I gave this board to “The Boys” on Sunday. Those of you who come to the Big Sur Campouts know who The Boys are. For those of you who don’t, they are a group of young guys and gals totally STOKED out of their gourds. Happy, fun, sharing, stoked. AND, they can surf!
Got a text from Evan last night saying that he had surfed this board and that he likes it. His exact words were:
“Super stoked. Haven’t ridden someone else’s board that I liked everything about it in a long time!”
This makes me happy. Evan is a better surfer than I by far. Maybe the board just needed the proper input?
Hi Chris,
Bummer the 5’11"ish didn’t go too well for you; did you play around much with putting some different fins in it, to try to get it to work the way you wanted before you put it up for sale?
Regardless, nice board and nice build, so thanks for posting it; when I saw you had it up for sale, I’d have been all over it if I’d been in the neighbourhood.
Then tell us a bit more it! And maybe even post a few pictures of it?
What influenced you/how did you arrive at that particular design/dimensions (e.g. was it a case of riding an existing Twinzer and deciding to try that next, or was it a case of taking how the 5’11"ish felt and estimating different dimensions to get what you were after, and then choosing to make it a Twinzer setup based on what you’d heard about how they respond rather than going the 5-fin again)?
What else did you change about it compared to the 5’11"ish - e.g. bottom contours, rocker lines, bottom contours, rails etc and why? In regards to fin setup (as mentioned above), what drove the decision to make it a Twinzer rather than a 5-fin?
Could be - horses for courses I guess - can you tell us (apart from the difference in abilities) what the other differences are respectively between yourself and Evan (e.g. height, weight, approximate age, style of surfing?).
Would be interesting to hear Evan’s impressions of your Twinzer - any chance of putting it under his feet for a few waves alongside the 5’11"ish to find that out? -> if it turns out he likes the 5-fin better than the Twinzer that would be even more interesting, along with figuring out why that is.
Anyway, as mentioned earlier thanks for posting the thread Chris - very much enjoyed it
Cheers!
Hi L.I.T., I started a thread dedicated to the twinzer… It should answer most of your questions.
Will be posting pics soon…
Regarding the differences between Evan and I.
I am 6’0" x 180. Evan is probably 10-20lbs lighter and a few inches shorter. I am surprised that he liked the board because I thought it was too big for me. Evan surfs many different kinds of board and he surfs them all really well… In regards to getting Ev on the twinzer. I would love to hear his feedback. I don’t know if we will work that out but, if the opportunity arises…
My inspiration for the twinzer came from the Twinzer Talk thread over at the ERBB. So glad I drank that koolaid.
Thanks Chris. I was kinda hoping you might do that, but didn’t want to pressure you to do so (the Twinzer certainly sounds like it’s a good enough board to deserve it’s own thread, but all I was hoping for was a few basic pic’s and a little commentary on how the board came about - a single post with that content in this thread would easily have satisfied that).
Yeah, I’d love to hear his feedback on it too - and I think that just telling him exactly what you said above about the Twinzer (i.e. “THAT board is the best board I have ever surfed. Hands down…”) would be a great start to get him willing to go the extra mile to try out the Twinzer.
Essentially, “if you thought the 5’11"ish was good, wait 'til you get your feet on this one!”.
Push that Twinzer koolaid!
But seriously it would be interesting to hear the result of him doing a side-by-side of the Twinzer versus the 5-fin.
What’s more, what you said above about Evan being able to ride many different boards well, and that “Maybe the board just needed the proper input?” could well turn out to be of benefit to you too.
As you said yourself; he is the better surfer, and it does sound like he’s got a talent for figuring out how to ride a board to get the most out of it - have you talked to Evan about how he rode differently/what he did to get the 5’11"ish to work so well for him?
It may well be that if you made just a few small changes (or maybe even just one?), to how you were riding the 5’11"ish, it would suddenly come alive for you in the smaller, grovelly surf?
If you do manage to line up that side-by-side comparison with him, as a second part to that experiment, it might well be worthwhile to ask him to watch you ride a few waves on the 5’11"ish and give you some feedback on it? Is there something he thinks you should be doing a little differently to get that board to work for you?
From the sound of it, it may well be that you could both learn a bit from each other here; he can help you with how to ride the board a little better, and you can help him with how get a better board to ride on.
End result, you both become better surfers.
Anyway, thanks for putting up the Twinzer thread - I’m off to go check it out now!
And Cheers!
