check my logo out

im doing a board for a school project, almost finished just have to a bit more posca pen work. i made a logo for my board, a hand drawn one. what i did was sketched it out, then photocopy it and enlarge it then print that out. i then went over it with a thick marker pen. reduce it back down to size then add the writing on top of it with photoshop. put it on to some decor tissue, then put in under the glass when glassing. this method worked prety well, and i got a pretty good out come. what do you think?

i think its a keeper…

Good job! It’s got a Thomas Cambel feel to it.

I like the way the little dude’s just chilling there, all kind of unsteady looking but still stoked. And the random weird fin sticking out is fun too.

Nice work!

I like it, turned out nice under the glass

I like it. Maybe add a stringer cause it’s PU/PE right?

cool! kind of a combo of t. campbell and some flavor of the old greg noll logo.

Sorry to be the only one with a negative opinion but i have to level with you.

The logo itself is a naif style…ok…you can like it or not. That’s not the point.

What’s wrong about it is that you have done a hand drawing and the lettering is computer generated and does not blend with each other.

When I say computer generated could be also decals.

I think if you hand draw the lettering the same way and style you did the drawing, you will see the improvement.

It will not be so perfect? So what? Your drawing isn’t also, nor does have to be be perfect.

The lettering is very Bold and your drawing is an outline. Not much balance in between.

If you try to hand draw ALL in the same hand style, i’m sure you will like it more than it is.

Apart from what I said, the concept is good.

Ooops…it’s under the glass?

Then I’m affraid it’s too late to ask opinions. Like it or not, there is nothing you can do now to improve.

I guess if you like it, that’s what matters. Forget what others think.

Cheers

I don’t agree with sandman. I think that the lettering actually works well in the overall logo. The lettering is bold and simple, and the lines on the drawing are crisp and simple as well. And because the lettering curves over the wave, it doesn’t have a mechanical feeling to it. I’ve got some old orange crate labels that have a mix of drawing and more print font style lettering - old style.

But yeah, there’s room for all different styles, what works for one person might not work for someone else. Ultimately it is like Sandman says, you have to go with you like and believe in.

Moss and Sandman are both right. My suggestion is it should be hand lettered using the current lettering as the template. Fat letters, just keep then outlined, or fill the lettering by hand.

Howzit pcinsc, The lettering is fine it's the placement that's off. The lettering should be in the area where the wave is hitting the ocean, the blank area . Aloha,Kokua

relax nicegoggles. if you like it, it’s perfect. i’ve definitely drawn worse things.

just my 2-cents…i like the art…i would play around with the style of lettering as others have suggested, also maybe a little color would be cool…but in the grand scheme of things as long as you like it…thats what maters…

I would take the suggestion of altering the font. But all in all it has a cool retro feel to it. Who knows maybe this style of logo will be an identifying factor in 30 years. I can see the thread now “So I found this board in someone’s yardsale for $300(remember inflation) and I thought wow that is practically free, so I grabbed it. Anyway it is by Rich V and it is such and such dimensions anyone know anything about it?” to which you can reply “We can’t tell you too much with out photos but if the logo looks like this then it was board number one, that is a gem you have found.”

yeh the boards 5’11’‘x20’'x2 3/16 quad fish. ive been trying to put some pictures on but its not working write now, ill get them soon for sure.

You guys are so spoiled now… When I was in high school and making boards in my garage I wouldn’t dare put a logo on them, that would have seemed way too arrogant back then. A homemade board didn’t have a logo. I think there was a rule or something… Then a few years later when I got up the nerve to put my name on one, I used a magic marker to write on some tissue and then glassed it in. The bleeding and running of the marker when the resin hit it gave a kind of unique charm; sort of a ''hey, look at me, I’m stupid!" type of look.

As a graphic designer I’m curious.

This is what you thought at the time: ''hey, look at me, I’m stupid!"

Looking back in time how do you feel now? Do you still feel stupid or proud having the courage to have done it?

(please don’t take this on the offensive side).

I’m just curious because you said: Then a few years later when I got up the nerve to put my name on one.

I hope you have not regret having done it.

All the best

I mostly feel like laughing when I think back on those days. Just a clueless kid having fun building surfboards. Putting your name on a board was considered pretentious back then, so it did take a little nerve to do it the first time. But then people started payimg me for the damn things, and the next thing you know I’m in business. I fell in with the wrong crowd and got to work with some of the best (like Jim Phillips). I don’t regret any of it, I still have fun everyday at work.
