Crowdsourced BRDs + algorithm

Hi all,

Would like some opininos on our new project.

We’re trying to crowd-source the largest libary of 3D surfboard files. The plan is to allow people to submit thier designs and for other people to download them, we’re writing a feedback loop and algorithm to find the best boards for the best people.

You can then take the BRDs and get them shaped anywhere you like, we’ll even be converting them to STL so you can use your 3D printer at home.

My question is this:

Are you protective over your files?

Would you see some/any value in having access so so many files?

Would you see value in utilising your inputs (location, height, weight, riding style etc) to reccomend the best outputs/boards?

Thanks in advacne for your help

cheers,

Gary

Great idea. I can see heaps of non-shapers using this resource.

What happens if someone submits lots of CI or Lost or other professional files that then become public domain …? It would be impossible to ensure that files are the property of the person who submits them.

I guess I don’t really see the point. “The best boards for the best people” - what does that even mean?  What exactly is the problem or issue this is supposed to remedy?

Its a new world, and a new business model. You’re getting other people to give you money, so you can pay yourself to develop software to share other peoples intellectual property?

I’m not saying this is a bad thing, but it sure is different than what they taught me in business school.

What you need to do is talk to all the un-ethical shaping machine owners.

They freely steal and sell everybody’s files.

Don’t beleive me?

I see it ALL the time.

I hand-shape **EVERYTHING **I sell.

This is my surfboard file.

I see absolutely no point to this idea at all. Leave it to a computer program to decide what would be best for you. Lame.

You’ve done it again!

Damn trade secret…

I nailed and nailed and I still didn’t hear no farrier humm

This is another example of the internet being used to make PEOPLE redundent , anyone giving away their hard earned knowedge for others to benefit financialy while at the same time making themselves redundent is a fool who does not understand the value of what they have learned in a lifetime of work experience . I dought those behind this scheme are old enough to understand or have achieved anything like what they are asking others to give up . Go ask apple to give up its secrets so you can put it on line for everyone to copy .  " The best boards for the best people ", that really says it all , total wankers .

An open-source board template repo already exists -

The great thing about ding repair is you can see and feel all these awesome surfboards from top name builders…can’t feel the rails with a computer file…at this point in time most surfboards are a copy of a copy…hey Gary E…you are not the first guy to do this rip off theme…it goes way back to before you were even born…before computers. So maybe tomorrow you will wake up with a new business plan. A new plan. Not a scheem…No one wants to give you their files for the better good of your wallet…get real…go pound sand.

 Well…

I think that’s about it for your idea around here Gary Elphick.

First off, you chose the wrong forum to promote the free exchange of hard earned data for financial gain with absolutely no personal investment on your part.

Secondly, around here we do every board by hand. It’s slow, but every gun, shortboard, paipo, alaia and longboard is unique to its maker and rider. And there’s no shortcut to getting a real custom board.

Third, don’t suck profit off our sweat, instead go out and do your own hard work. Or get like-minded fools like yourself to give you free data and files and then recirculate it amongst your own kind. The guys and gals around here share to those that deserve it.

Considering that you joined yesterday…You’re not really a part of Sways unless you’ve really shared like so many professional, amateur and hacks do here. Call it Paying It Forward, generosity or just helping others out.

This is a perfect fit for the Chinese surfboard industry.

They are the un-disputed best at ripping off other peoples products.

Gary dipshit,

I take it you don’t make surfboards for a living?

That thing looks like a real Bastard!

Looks very chinese?? http://disruptsurfing.com/faq/

Well, that explains it.

Hi Gary the problem with your chinese surfboards is that core surfers would not be seen DEAD on a Disrupt or a Sanctum or an East Coast Surfboard or any of the chinese boards. You look like an english back packer ie total looser.

These boards suit entry level surfers such as back packers down at Bondi but as soon as you know whats going on in surfing you would not buy another one.

Look at GSI, 7S brought out high performance shortboards this year, how many are being ridden by good surfers? I have not seen any at Manly or Freshwater and they are two of the most crowded beaches in Australia.

$350 chinese boards are not good for anyone.

Best of luck stealing peoples designs mate…
