In Andrew Kidman’s movie Litmus Derek Hynd surfs beautifully- check it out http://litmus.com.au/ . Granted three wished, after sustainable world peace and justice, and the ability to sing like Otis Reading, I would choose to surf like Derek Hynd (or maybe Wayne Lynch or David Rastavich or Dan Malloy or maybe like me but a lot better).
Australian University [“college”] champion for a few years
New South Wales champion also

I always look forward to reading anything from Derek. He is a surfers surfer. He has such an eclectic viewpoint and original mind. I really like everything he has done for the timeless fish design also. Finally , a surfer that truly understands the beauty of the design -SPEED!!! It was always a misunderstood little board until Derek and I thank him for that…
I’m hoping he gets some good screen time in “Glass Love”…
Derek Hynd was instrumental in getting my partner Kay into competitive surfing. She was one of the original members of Newport Plus.platty.
Photos Kays first board, and a young TC flying kites at Newport.
Platty, those are GEM photos, at least to this '70s, '80s peninsular regular visitor.
…more please !! (you can whack 'em on the “share the stoke” thread, if you like…I’ll be stoked ! ) …memories…
(mental note to self... get 'the wave within ' book [tom's bio] and check out the 'plus' club photo my brother took there... scannable, methinks!!). Thanks for the reminder shot!

Hey Ben. I had a hunt around and found the NP website. The photos are of Kay a few years back.platty.
Beyond all that, his highest hopes and deepest love revolve around his son.
For those who enjoy his insights, Derek has more to share than ever before.
re. Derek. He was and I hope still is a great surfer and a good bloke. A little misunderstood, by some, but at the bottom of it a heart of gold. He was one of the few guys who took the time to nurture and encourage the kids of Newport. Although I havnt seen or spoken to him in probably 25 years I hope he’s well, happy and enjoying life as only Derek seemed to know how. He comes to mind often, one of the guys from the old days that I can say I truely miss.
Still surfing
Kay (partner of Platty and ex Newport person, a loong time ago).

I wonder if Simon has shots of you Kay, from his Tracks days ?
(I’ll ask, next time I ring…)
we used to skate newport carpark, avalon wall, and mona vale primary in the mid to late 70’s…me, simon, les blundell, dave webster, jed tate… any of those names ring a bell ?

Meanwhile, more early Derek shots …
I talked to Derek about twelve months ago and he had an 11’6" on top of the car! He was the most stylish surfer of his era bar none but lacked that cut throat competitive nature that you need to get to the top. I surfed with him and the Newport crew quite a bit in the seventies, it was a very dynamic little group. Twemlow was still living in Newport until a couple of years ago but not surfing much…I’m trying to come up with some other names here…Mike Newling was still around Newport also, working as a professional fashion photographer!
