This is Monica. Don’t know why I called her so, it just happened…

Flame… I shaped it to be a surf/paddle board.  I didn’t have any idea of how I was going to decorate it untill I was ready to glass… I kept stalling untill one evening I went into the garage a just looked at it… it looked fast… it needed some FLAMES!

I name my boards mainly to be able to tell my brother which one I was riding and how things worked out. The first 4 were basically numerical in Hawaiian, then I started naming them by specific characteristics like shapes and colors. When I dropped a white board into the dirt while glassing, it became my “dirty white board”. I have two boards with similar shapes but one is 1 foot shorter, so those are big brother, little sister.

What about your boards Whitney?

I call this one Shakira

and this one is "the orange dream machine" named after my favorite smoothie at Jamba

I have had boards that I have called names, They just can't be repeated here.

Just the latest board actualy got a name

“California Tweener”

I can post a pic my puters down, but its the blue one in resin tints thread or the cal tweener thread,

Bwana Dik, Parsumonius Trigluni, The Bismark, Hershey Squirt Express, Squirt II, Mojomatic, Mojomatic Magnifico, The Wiz... the list goes on and on.

Yes, there's some sort of meaning and story behind all of them.  Some boards never received a name.  Most do if I remember to name them.

"Bwana Dik" was inspired by a scene in Frank Zappa's movie "200 Motels" in which members of the band sing a song about.....err.... life on the road.

When I had my label (if you can really call it that), all the models had names. They were named after people in my best friend’s fraternity family. Him, his big, grandbig, and little. His model was the Casper, and applied to longboards 9’+. There was also the Casper Mini, which was for mini longboards in the 8-9’ range. His big was nicknamed Nemo, naturally this was for fish. There are probably 5-6 Nemos floating around out there, I shaped fish more than anything. His little’s nickname is Maverick, after the penguin in the movie Surf’s Up. They all have cartoon character nicknames pretty much. There’s only one Maverick floating around; I didn’t make a lot of shortboards. On the off chance I ever made a SUP, it was to be called Memphis, for his grandbig, who is a hefty guy haha. There was also the 5speed, which wasn’t named after anyone but was the 5ft stubbie bonzer I made two of.

Others had nicknames. A longboard pre-Casper days with a Mexican blanket tint on the bottom was called “Blanket” by its owner. As for my own boards, they have had a lot of nicknames.

Sunfish - the yellow 5’10" fish I made myself with a yellow sunburst swirl on the deck

Frito Bandito - a 8’ funboard I bought used, it was shaped in Texas and the owner had them spray paint the Mexican flag on it. It was faded and a little beat up, so I fixed the dings and then painted the whole thing blue with a white comp band, but the name stuck.

Big Red/Big Blue - Two longboards, one with a red tint, the other with a blue. Real creative naming.

The Hog - A 9’8" beast of a longboard that you could hog all the waves at a spot with if you wanted to

I think that’s all of the good ones.

200 Motels Mr. Mellor?? that’s really reaching back. Had a dog I named Burt…as in the Lonesome Cowboy, and a board named Opal as in, Hot Little…

Yeah... I made 'Bwana Dik' for a friend back in 1971/72 I believe(?)  We were still in High School.  I remember the board.  It was a clear 7'4" round-pintail with a vee nose, concave tail and single fin.

Those are funny names, John.  I’ve had quite a few named ‘piece of shit.’

Howzit ethereal,When Iowned my restaurant /bar it was the local Biker bar and when they would come to my house I would show them my boards and I had named them after Harley's,like Sportster,Fatboy, Springer. you get the idea. We got along great because they were as devoted to their bikes as I was to surfing and even though they are 2 totally different things the love involved was the same so we could relate on that plane. Best customers in theworld and never had problems since they took care of any problems. They used to bug meabout getting a Harely and I wouldtell them I hardly had the attention span to drive a car and I would most likely kill myself on a Harely. I rode bikes when I was young and even rode Harely's and sinceI moved to Az I am looking into buying at least a 1200 sportster to cruise around on. Aloha,Kokua

I don't name them when I build them but some of the boards have Names....

I did a Purple fade job on a fish for Joseph....Joe and his family started out calling it the "purple people eater".......Two summers later the board is named "The Purple Eater"...I like that!

I built a backyard copy of the Walden compact disc...6'5"....I called it "short and fat"....Not a good name....The crew where I surf  call it  "The Screaming Yellow Disc"....you know how it is...small board with crazy resin work....

......And the 8 footer...........oh yeah....oh yeah.....oh yeah.........magic..........I did not name it...it just happened......

Ray

My first one was called "#1 in a series"

My second was named "K8" for my daughter Katy

I did a thumb shape and called it "Tom's Thumb"

I built a compsand fish and during the build the skin was weighted with sandbags. I called it "The Fishbag"

I built a chambered kneeboard using sugar pine and redwood. A couple of small knots fell in during construction and stayed there. I called it "The Rattler."

For obvious reasons, my first resin tint was called "Big Blue"

I don't normally name my boards, I usually refer to them as ''the 6'6'', or ''the 5'10'', etc. But I have one called ''Speck'', because it has little black spots mixed in an opaque gray lamination. Actually it's full name is ''speckled sea trout'' - speck is just for short. My hero laminator friend strained the resin twice, and apologized a million times, but I told him it just gave the board character. And a name.

my first board...the fat tuna...i wanted a board that went fast like a tuna but was fat

Thank you all. Keep 'em coming.

I named one of my boards “the Heartbreaker” because someone always told me I’d break a lot of hearts. HA.

And a couple of the others are named after ex-boyfriends. hah.  ‘The Banshee’,…

Mostly they are about personality characteristics… makes things interesting & you always have a good story to tell

Fat-Bat...a fattish, semi-fish design that has a bat tail

Quadfather - a quad finned design of mine, just a little play on words and used a variation of the Godfather logo too....

MP3- is a design loosely based on the MP cutty board, but also my intitials are MP, this design usually comes with a 2 + 1 set-up which equals 3...MP3....

The Swinger - a 2 boards in one design, similar to a stinger at first glance....kinda went with the name 'Swinger' coz it wa close to stinger but also for the fact that 'Swingers' are all about pleasure and feeling great, and ya gotta be open minded..haha...

The Kritta - it is a different looking creation with its flat deck and mostly quad finned and deep concaves and snub nose, something so non -mainstream needed a name that suited, it seemed to do the job....

Fish-Finger - its a hybrid design I am workin on, half fish, half alaia, rails are quite straight so looks a little like a finger especially with fat round nose, but definitely fishy looking too....

have also done others  such as the Double-D, the Mongrel, the Six Pistol, and the Vicious Kanid...all have a bit of a story...have recently had my son doing one off unique original logos for some of these designs and people are lovin them....heres a pic of one...
