Interesting to look at this earliest reference to SurfTech on Swaylocks: http://www.swaylocks.com/cgi-bin/discussion/archive.cgi?review=180 Re: vacuum bagging Jim Phillips – Monday, 4 September 2000, at 9:19 a.m.As a manufcturer and shaper, this is akin to shooting myself in the foot, but, the need for custom boards for about 90% of the surfing population is unneeded. Snowboarders and skiers all buy from the rack. This has just not become cool enough for surfers yet. The stigma of pop out still lingers and everyone wants to be savy enough to have ordered a “custom” board, even if its off the rack. If I had the volume production, I would get one or more of my designs into production at Surf Tech. Mind you I HAVEN’T surfed one, but the general overal appearance is that of a surfboard, no rail seams. Not your bubba board. Re: vacuum bagging PIC Swaylock – Monday, 4 September 2000, at 1:53 p.m.Jim, I’ll back you up on that. I’m currently riding my second surftech board. As far as performance goes, the first one was one of the best boards I ever owned. Fast, light & responsive - the board was super rigid due to the rock hard epoxy resin. As far as looks go, these boards are lookers - wood laminate shells & gloss coats. And all of this from non “custom” designs - just designs that are tried and tested. Give one a go they’re sweet. FYI my first one, a 9’0 progressive longboard, did snap in half. Swaylock http://www.swaylocks.com/cgi-bin/discussion/archive.cgi?review=180
Hey Rob, Took a chance and stepped into the epoxy world though I went with BoardWorks because of my love of Aipa shapes (9’ 1" Kanoa Dahlin). Continue to ride his regular production stuff…just got a Sting from him a few weeks ago…love it, but was curious about the epoxy stuff. Longevity. Weight to performance ratio. Etc. I have to admit the stories of these boards snapping has me a bit worried. Question. Can these boards (SurfTech or BoardWorks) have their color changed? What type of paint? Clear coat? Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks.

I guess it’s all apples and oranges when your stuck three hours from the ocean in the middle of Mass. At the end of the day, people that buy these boards like them, and they hold up pretty good too.

A acquaintence of mine with whom I share waves and who has had more than a few Surftechs is currently upset that his 10-2 (?) Aipa has delaminated. Good luck.

Jake, I know your just kidding around and all that but let’s get one thing straight: I live at the beach and commute 1.5 hours each way to work never moving more than two miles inland. I do have my priorities in order. In this post I just wanted to show the early reaction to Surftechs. It seems that they were somewhat favorable and opposition to them has become more vocal. Not to single Jim Phillips out but his is an interesting comment because of his stature. It’s interesting to see how ideas evolve. Also, as Swaylocks ages/grows the archives will become an important historical resource. Except for the deleted threads (some of which I’ve saved). Rob Olliges

R.O. I’m glad you can sniff the salt air.

What deleted threads??? Censored early Surftech references?

No censored Surftech threads. Just some territorial idiots like “bob” & “ranchlander” who brought destruction to a new low until the “voice or reason” (Stan P.) appealed for calm. Albeit a little too late.

It’t true that only retards like Surftechs. I know, it sounds insulting and makes some people want to hang me, but facts are facts. They are for retards. Forest Gump is even too cool to ride a Surftech. Plus, anyone who buys something that was made overseas is a traitor (unless that product is ONLY made overseas, like Altoids or Newcastle). Buy American made products, or go move to Mexico before everyone hates you. Retard!

those “territorial idiots” including the “voice of reason” among others have strong private opinions concerning your hero. no one denies his skill as a craftsman (albeit w/o originality) or his public persona. its his personal character thats earned the distain.
