I bought a JC stingray 3 weeks ago for $520.I’ve been contimplating on buying the JC nx1 ,but the one at my local surfshop has minor damage on the bottom.I asked the manager to see if they had another one at the Nags Head shop.He called them and said,"they have one there but it costs $550."I asked him why it was more expensive then the one he has and he replied,"its probably because of the paint job."I called the other shop later in the day to ask them what the board looked like.Come to find out the boards have the same graphics but a different color. Now he doesn’t know that the other board cost $535 so I question him why it cost more.He said,"JC boards just cost more than some of the other boards, and that the stingray they also have is the same price."I told him I bought mine $15 cheaper 3 weeks ago.He then goes on to say that surftech just started raising the price on their new shipments.Anyways, I think the epoxy boards are starting to catch on, and their going to bank off of it more.
stop whining
I’m not whining.Just think it sucks that their raising the prices up to benefit from the large demand.Go figure.
It’s called “capitalism”. It gets my approval.
Manufactures of a (any) product usually suggest a retail price. It is up to the retailer to actually set a price, whether less or more $'s. $15 more for a five-hundred something dollar product is around + 2.7-2.8%. That sort of price range for a product is typical among retailers in any industry. If you want to find a better price, shop around. In the end, you are going to find out that you burned more than $15 of gas and wasted a lot of time. If you use the board a lot, it comes out to pennies, or fractions of pennies, per wave anyway. It makes as much sense as those folks who will drive 20-30 miles to find gas that is 3-5 cents less a gallon.
There is also a thing known as the cost of materials went up. Cloth has had an increase, poly resin went up, gas, rent, food… Generally, when there is an increase in the factory, it goes to the consumer.
How would you like to buy a custom epoxy, not moulded, for about $100 or so LESS??
always looking to save money, jeffwells.what’s up?

While you are on the topic of epoxy boards, could someone give me more info on these boards. This is a whole new thing to me…renting them for the first time in Hawaii …I was told by Cuban in Waikiki and Tommy Castleton in Maui ,who let me use their own personal boards, that these boards, being 10’ or more, were lighter…the ride is nice and they certainly are more damage proof. I was considering buying an epoxy board as it may be easier for me to carry a long board and of course the price is more affordable. But back home here, the guys are scoofing at me like “these boards are made in Japan” and “you can do better than that.” Of course, I am in love with that resin “Pinder” board for $900, but this could do the job for now.
I just want to know what exactly is the difference in the materials and the manufaturing process.
It all depends on the process. If you’re on a surftech or boardworks, then you’re riding a moulded board. If you ride an epoxy that is made in the “traditional” sense, you’re riding a board that has a lot of time and energy put into MAKING it.
The differences between the poly and epoxy boards, resin, foam, and sometimes, cloth.
Todd pinder also shapes boards for epoxy glassing but using high quality pu foam not styrofoam
when asked what were better pu vs epoxy an old time surfer once asked me how many old resin boards where at a break (queens) their were diffs, brewers, sparkys, blue hawaii but how many epoxy???? very few OLD EPOXYS
epoxy maybe "stronger" but the foam is not absorbant this may sound good but if an epoxy board is dinged on the rail the water could quickly move to the tail or nose and could not be "dried out" like a traditional board
Life is too short to deal with a cheapskate who complains about $15.00 on the price of a board. Probably the same guy who borrows beer money, and never pays you back.
Tell you what, Yield to nature, go out and get a job, then tell the boss to keep $15 from your paycheck, just because you love working there!
The original poster should be complaining about the sales tax and every other tax and regulation along the way that inflates the price of the board along the way. All of this tax money goes to the government who does nothing to earn it and then they piss it down a rathole. The guy making the board and selling the board at a small profit is just trying to make an honest living. What's the government doing for ya? NOTHING!!!!
My local government managed to sweep the streets in my neighborhood, fill in three potholes, and install a stop sign at an accident prone intersection at the end of my street last week. I’d better tell them this amounts to nothing. Better yet, I live near a fire station. I’ll go tell all the guys who live there that their employer never gets anything done, and that their tax dollars are going to waste. I’m sure they’ll be so pissed when they discover this.
