EXPOSED CORK: God's grip or natures traction???

UNBELIEVABLE grip!!! My first 2mm nl20 exposed corecork experience. I could feel it moving with my tow squeeze on bottom turns.

I will never wax a board or buy traction pads( or maxi pads) ever again.

The band wagon is leaving the station…time to hop on board. If the board is exposed cork, you won’t be falling off due to traction issues.

Barking up the wrong tree you say??? Sorry, cork is made from bark. I feel very green now. I think I will stop drinking from the toilet bowl.

hurray for cork!!! God’s grip or natures traction? You be the judge.

You got me!

I am going to get some too, to try it. One 1mm nl20 as a traction pad, and one 2mm nl20 for a build that needs to be finished.

I just wonder how it holds up to 3yrs+ abuse, since my boards tend to live that long.

Another 44" wakesurfer Grom out this mornin with exposed cork deck

So just out of curiosity, and forgive me if you’ve already explained elsewhere, how are you guys sticking on the cork?  Contact glue? Spray adhesive? Epoxy?

Baggin, using epoxy on an EPS core

Charlie, thanks for taking care of Les. He had a great time. He said he’s getting some cork as soon as he gets back home.

I saw the cork gemini Bernie got from you. Very nice work. Too bad Bernie’s knee is messed up, he has 2 new boards and he can’t surf.

Dig the style of your writing.

Hi Lakewakes, i like the cork idea very much. How do you treat the cork after bagging it on? Just some sanding? Because it looks different in both of your pictures.

1st pick is out of bag, I use 60 grit paper to sand off excess resin

Hey Wouter,

You might want to consider 2mm for the traction portion. Drewtang(corecork distributor) or feral dave, might have some more experience in regards to this. This was my first exposed cork and the 2mm reminds me of new shag carpet getting all between my toes. I thought my glass/foam was denting beneath the cork, but it is the cork that is moving. This morning I noticed it sprung back to non dented shape. Really amazing stuff.

If mine ever wears our I will just slap another piece over it and rock on.

I tend to treat my boards like a beer bottle, so they last decades. I imagine repalcing the cork is a 20 minute task and a 90 minute throw in the vacuum bag.

LW,

 Your boards are looking nice.

I noticed your fresh out of the bag shot with the epoxy bleed throughs. I by accident discovered a nice remedy to that. When I first did a full wrapped rail with the deck piece, I had 5 long pieces of tape directly to the cork to help keep it in place until I got the releash film   situated and pull the rails totally  down prior to popping it in the vac bag. The 5 pieces of tape came off with a bit of difficulty because the bleed through of epoxy really got on the tape.

The next deck I threw a piece of peel ply(very inexpensive material) to cover the whole deck, then taped over the peel ply. Put the release film on, taped that tight and threw it in the bag. When I peeled the tape and peel ply off(super easy) the cork surface was perfect. No sanding, no epoxy bleed through. It all got transfered to the peel ply

Hey Harry,

Les is hardcore. My fins he made are awesome. I put his large quad set on my SUP to check it out and they worked nice. Can’t wait to try them in better conditions.

I have a repaired board of Bernie’s that is done also. I emailed Bernie but never heard back. When the winds back off and a swell comes, i bet his knee will be feeling better.

aloha

Hey Charlie, I bet Bernie said I dropped the board and caused the ding. He’s been using me as his scapegoat for all the dings on his boards, but I only did that to one board. Can’t complain too much though because he passes his boards on to me eventually. I’ll probably take the 6’4" Gemini from him before too long. I don’t see him being able to paddle something that small anymore, and he has the new Corecork one you made.

Les is a real go for it guy. I’m always amazed at the stuff he makes. He gave me a beautiful hand plane for body surfing. Last year he did the Molokai to Oahu race on a SUP with 2 other guys who had never done this kind of thing before. He’s really excited about making a corecork board, I bet it will only be the first of many.

We have about 5 or so compsand boards to finish. I got one shaped and waiting for some time for Bernie and his bagging gear. Maybe go with an exposed cork inlay over balsa or wiliwili for the top. I still have a 2’ x 4’ roll of the stuff fisher sells.

Remind Bernie about getting a chunk of Wiliwili when he picks up his board. I told him that I wanted you to try it for your nose and tail blocks.

Charlie,

I see you have a keen eye., so use peel ply as for infusion Baggin then put the blue perf. Ply over then the breather to soak it up. I have to sand anyway cause the Cf tape I use for flex control sits proud.

Cheers
Mark

LW,

You are light years ahead of me then. I just use vacuum bags, no infusion. I used to vac bag fiberglass/cf/kevlar to boards back in the day and have litterally rolls and rolls of peel ply. Just used the peel ply to keep in tune with given ameican indian name “bear minimum” in order to solve my blue tape sticking dilemma.  My breather cloth sits outside the release film and is the felf type and lasts for years(hundreds of pulls) before I ever consider using a new piece. I have different lengths ready to go to match the vac bag length.

I like your work and know nothing about your water sport. Might move some day and only have a lake and a boat to get my surf on. Have to hit yhou up for some design specs to keep my fat arse afloat in non salt water.

aloha,

Charlie

Charlie,

I don’t infuse but been Baggin EPS since mid 2008. I just use the blue perf ply that is 1mil thick and breather wrapped over it.
Look just came in. Lol

Score!!!

Few questions a couple years down the line.

How are the exposed cork decks holding up?  I read that you could just resurface if it wore out but that sounds like a messy time consuming job.

How do you guys finsih the edge of the cork?  Do you sand it flush?

Also,  what schedule would you use under the cork for a pretty bomb proof deck (over 1.5lb EPS)?

Working great on barefoot ride, never tried shoes. Yes Sand edge smooth then pinlinene and topcoat board 1/4 over the cork to seal pinline.
I have only used 1mm exposed cork on team boards as cheap , light full deck traction. I would laminate as usual on a 1.5# foam board.
For 1.5# foam 1mm is best used under , like 4e/cork/4e for a good dent resistant board.

It makes a nice comfy deck for paipos..........
