that thing is a lot of fun on small, mushy days…my buddies and i slap one of those in our longboards and put in a really small FCS center fin…tail slips out all over the place…we just throw the board around in as many circles as we can before we lose the wave…good times…enjoy your new little toy.
I just need to figure a way to make the"connection" strong where the screw holds the fin into the box , as my fins are fibreglass, and I wouldn’t want to lose any of them . [$$!!]
Kokua , I think it was you … didn’t you have a good tip regarding that, when this was posted a while ago ? [I couldn’t seem to find it , for some reason]
Howzit Chipfish, The only problem with those adapters is the screw that's at an angle, it wants to push the fin out of the box. The fix is to screw the screw into the fin enough to make a mark on the fin and then just drill a shallow 1/8" deep indentation into the fin at the mark to set the screw into the fin and solves the problem, my FCS rep loved that idea.Aloha,Kokua
Anyone know if these thing are available online somewhere? (That goes for a lot of things, my local surfshop stopped carrying leash parts for some reason…)
Hey Soulstice! Have you tried padling your board with you facing the tail then popping up and spinning around, its good fun just make shore your leggieless.
sorry to drag up a really old post. I am living very far from any surf shop these days but i need to get a hold of one of these longboard fin box adapters for a surf trip next month. A friend is gonna be in California in mid march and he says he will pick one up for me
If you know a place or a name of a person who might know where to pick one up. Even a good online store based in California would be great.
FCS might not make them anymore. I recently ordered some direct from FCS, and they cancelled that portion of my order. I am sad if they did stop making them.
Howzit Brian, I was going through stuff today for my move and came across one of those FCS adapters. If you want it you can have it. Just let me know where to mail it to.Aloha,Kokua
Was it ever figured out if FCS is still making these or not? I’m kind of depending on that adapter as an important part in my next board design. It’d be great to get some more info on them.
I made a couple of FCS longboard fin box adapters 7 or 8 years ago. one I milled from a piece of teflon and the other from the base of a broken longboard fin. I drilled then chisled out slots for the FCS tabs. With the fin in the adapter but not yet in the longboard fin box I drilled a 1/8" hole through the adapter and through the center of the FCS tabs and out the other side of the adapter. I then cut pieces of 1/8" brass rod to fill the holes. the brass rods hold the fin in and stay in place once the adapter in in the longboard fin box. Worked great for the couple of years that I used them. Later I heard that FCS made an adapter but they had a different way to hold the fins in.
Now I am making a adapter for futures center fins to fit a longboard box. I plan to shave down the sides of a futures rear fin box to fit in a longboard fin box. Hold it in by a screw through the bottom of the futures box down to a fin screw base plate in the longboard box. that the general idea but I don't have all the details worked out yet.
I got 6 sets of futures fins last fall at a silent auction fundraiser. I am wanting to make a thruster fin setup on my 9 footer to try out some of these fins.
Brian K, You might want to check with Scott at “Foam, Fins And Fiberglass” in Ventura, Ca. Ph.# 805 648 3626. He has a good stock of supplies and is a decent guy.
Howzit Dave, I don't think they still make them. The one I found is new and in the original package. My Hi.Rep then really took are of me since I was like the unofficial rep for the Hanalei side of Kauai and got a lot of freebies from them. You needed to drill a small dent in the frontof the finso the hexscrew would fit into it and hold the fin in the adapter. if you did that the fin would not come out of the adapter which was the bad part of those adapters.Aloha,Kokua
Be Careful with these. They have a tendency to fail, and you will loose your fin. Even if you drill holes and make better way of holding the fins in, they can break.
Howzit surfthis, Good for you to look into them. All I need to know is if the Brian guy wants it and if not then if anybody else wants it they can have it.Aloha,Kokua
