Which do you use?
this thread has been done a hundred times already.
answer: ProBox
fcs are light,easy to install
and easy to repair
their fins and plugs have improved heaps.
and they have a small footprint so they allow the tail of the board
to have a well distributed flex pattern.
futures have ,heavy/ugly boxes that dont flex and are hard to repair
I use futures, but I wish someone would make a hybrid of the two, especially for use in sandwich boards. Like an FCS plug that has tabs that go out towards the rails and tie into the base glass (future style), but don’t need to be attached to the deck, which inhibits flex. A 1" tab on each side would probably be strong enough, but it’d have to be trimmed on the outside of the back plug. The short length of the plug would also help to promote a more natural flex characteristic. Futures are also just soooo easy to install and a kit could be made in the same way for a future style plug.
I really like the fins that fcs offers, but the resin around the plug always seems to crack away from the base glass and I get water damage around the plug.
I use F.C.S. …for the side fins.
And the multi fin systems box for my back fin [multi fin is like the Aussie version of bahne / fins unlimited boxes , I guess.]
" Futures" we would have to order in from Sydney , 3000 MILES away…which is exactly what a mate of mine , who makes boards in Albany , does.
cheers
ben
I like FCS because they are easy to repair and Mitch’s in Solona beach has them in stock.
I like Pro box because they have a very backyard friendly install kit and great customer service. Probox also has the angle insert things…
Never worked with futures…
Lets not forget about Lokbox , I don’t use their system but Lokbox does have a great selection of fins and Lokbox has been very helpful on swaylocks and surfer mag design fourm…
Yeah… all preference… I used FCS on my first 6… and on 7th and 8th gone with futures… to try it…
re. sandwhich construction
im still in testing stages
but it appears to me that
fcs plugs dont need to attached to the deck either
as long as you have enough glass and use inserts of a higher density foam
i preseal the holes and let the resin cure
then stick in the plugs
that way if the plug busts, water wont get past the sealer
its better if you pull/crack the plug
than damage the board
i mean
they are a piece of wees to fix!!
unlike a glasson which can really damage the board
not to mention foiling a new fin.
at the end of the day id rather fix a craked fcs plug
than any other damaged box etc
Hey fostachild, check out lockbox, may be what your looking for.
p.s. you can use FCS fins in them too.
cheers,
scott
Howzit scott, I agrre about LokBox, think it’s a better choice than Futures and they have a great selection of fins.Aloha,Kokua
i’d go with lox, then pro (they both can use FCS, and loxbox has good customer service), then future, then FCS.
Futures are solid, I’ve ran over a longboard . . . once. I had finished a wave, and was standing in the white wash when my board skids and stops like someone grabbed and pulled it out under my feet. I come up and there’s this big red loose 10 footer floating in front of my grill. I push it aside and check out my board, before the next thumper comes in. the board was gone. I looked for it for 5 minutes, but couldn’t see it. I didn’t see its owner either. Mine had a bunch of dings on the bottom . . .
Lokbox…great fin selection from Rainbow, and customer service is unreal.
Solid system…
ive heard it discussed and its happend to me
futuers boxes create a hinge effect between the rear and leading fins
and can cause breakage on light glass jobs
speeed, ofishl for center fins
My experience. The good thing about fcs is when they hit you they snap out minimizing damage to your body. Sometimes they snap out too easy and require some repair to the foam underneath. Futures feel more solid at the base. Difficult to knock out, but significant damage to the foam. Both have lots of fins to choose. I don’t like the little recessed barrel screw in either. They strip easy, get clogged with sand and crap, and are difficult to remove and change with cold fingers. Lokbox has excellent fin selection, too. Great customer service as mentioned. Easier to switch with cold stiff fingers. The install on Futures is about the same as Lokbox. Never intalled fcs, but it looks pretty simple. I don’t know about the effect of any of the above sytems in terms of tail flex and I doubt 99 percent of riders can tell the difference, either. Mike
Hey Paul
Have you tried using the balsa inserts that “loic” used a few weeks ago for the fcs plugs on his balsa compsand? Looked like a pretty good way to firm up that area.
