fingerprints on sanded finishes

ok so another post… i looked in the archives breifly, and diddnt see anything that related at all…

ok i have have no problem with the look of my sanded finish boards… but once people start putting their gubby little hands all over them, then i have fingerprints all over the rails and where ever they touch…

so whats the deal? i dont see fingerprints all over most boards in shops… and people touch them all the time…

im not looking for some sort of sealer sort of fake looking finish deal… just somethin that repels the fingerprints and keeps the gubby paws from rubbing off on my my boards…

i see the dolphin skin stuff, whats the deal with that? sounds like an acrillic sealer sort of thing… dont really need that i dont think…

im not trying to change the look of my finish, just keep it clean thats all…

A board will pick-up all the grease and dirt from peoples hands and show on the board. Mineral spirits will get it off and there are other like de-greaser products that can get rid of those nasty little finger prints. Oh dont dump that on the board either! just a quick dab with a rag and a wipe should do you just fine.

make everyone wear gloves…mineral spirits is the best way to go…make sure everyone drinks a littie before they come in your shop !! NO just kidding ! mineral spirits is the answer… peace, ET

Hang out with less greasy people…

Good answer. ET

Howzit onion, You may not be looking for a sealer but that is what would keep those hand prints off the board. That is the only reason I use a acrylic finish on the boards I build, if you live near a F.H.store they carry an acrylic sealer that does just what you want, otherwise get the stuff Herb uses, it works just the same.Aloha,Kokua

Hi,

Some options:

1 - Pack the boards with pvc film.

2 - Keep a box with some polyuetane powder inside, then ask people to rub their hands before touch the boards.

3 - Hit the hands of these pigs with a bamboo stick if they dare to touch your beauties:))))

well, i seriously just laughed… funny answers, and all make sense… smack em with a stick, seriously thats funny to me… get less greasy friends… laughing really…

hate to even be serious after reading those, but ok…ok…ok…

but i really think there is some secret trick the big names use…lets say just “saying” cause i cant spell “hypothetical”

or i possibly did…

anyway, lets say theres my board sitting next to 3 diffrent nationwide brands in a shop, they all have the exact same looking finish…

then i come back a week or so later, and my board has fingerprints all over it, but the other 3 big name brands dont…

i figure the dirty handed guy who grabbed on my board did the same to the other 3… so whats on there that im missing…

guess i should have paid more attention to what the finish sander was doing when i worked in the last production shop… hell, i was busy, and diddnt really care about much but where we were going to eat lunch, and finishing my job…

A lot of shop boards have a Dolphin Skin or acryllic sealer applied, and then rubbed out with a scotchbright-type pad. The coarser the pad, the more matte the finish of course.

May be some other secret lurking out there, but that’s the way I’ve seen it done in this neck of the woods.

gloss em.

sanded finish is an oxymoron.

sanded boards are not finished.

If enough people call a box a wheel

soon the question will arise…

why dosent this wheel roll?

They might best be called a fingerprint finish.

‘‘wow nice fingerprints davis’’

Just how do you get that effect?

…ambrose…

Howzit onion, Some companies actually finish the boards with a spray coat of laquer. Aloha,Kokua

Call the police and have the (gubby?)fingerprints identified. Then confront the guilty parties and tell them " If you don’t keep your dick beaters off of my boards I will have no problem with turning your greasy paws over to the local authorities!"

J/K!

Now may I ask a couple of questions?

1: Do the prints make a difference in the way your boards perform?

2: Does it stop you from enjoying the sport of KINGS?

3: In all fairness does it really matter what your “boards” look like as long as you have a great time in the water?

OK, I have bitched enough and some excellent replies to clean up your problem have been posted.

G’day Onion,

May I ask what Grit Paper you’re finishing with? I f you finish to about 1000 or 1200 you probably shouldn’t get the finger prints.

Or you could take it as a compliment that the grubby little buggers are checking out your sticks.

We finish ( an oxymoron as Ambrose correctly states) our shortboards with a clear acrylic lacqer, we used to add a flattening base when the really mat finish was a bit more popular but now we just use it straight and finish with 1200 or higher.

Regards

Daren

haha this is crazy, i diddnt expect to get so many laughs with this topic… every time i check it i laugh, cant really say im getting anywhere with the actual question, but the replies make up for it, at least its funny…ambrose your nuts man, i dont think ive ever read a post of yours that diddnt either make me think deep, or start laughing… or both at the same time…

ok where was i… ummmm yes these fingerprints do have an effect on the boards performance… oil and water dont mix, so the oils in the fingerprints throw off the flow of the water as it passes, creating cavitation thus slowing and/or affecting the feel of the board while riding…

no but really, i guess ill give the dolphin skin a shot…i just know i tried an acrillic surfboard sealer/polish thing a few years ago , and hated the results… it was obvious that there was some sort of sealer was on the board… i just dont want dolphin skin to have that effect… but ill give it a try i suppose…

there are 2 kinds i see.from dolphin skin… acrylic teflon selant, and cutter protector… the sealant is somewhat self explanitory, but what the hell is cutter protector? anybody know…

Leave em as is, guy in shop thinks "wow that board in the middle must be good, it’s had loads of interest, no one’s even bothered to pick the other ones up "

this is the trick for the sand finish of champions -

mix up some rubbingcompound/polish and water in an old water bottle. squirt a little bit on your board after you have sanded it to 320 or 400. Put a scotch brite pad on a sanding pad and buff it out (red scotchbrite is sort of a matte finish and grey scotch brite will make it really shiney - i like red).

really nice even finish - takes out small scratches and covers up exposed weave a little bit - makes the board reallllllly smoooooooth and fingerprints wont stick.

ps - using this method will make you a better sander because if you left scatches from heavier grit, it will show.

Howzit onion, The trick with acrylic sealer is after you have put a few coats on the board you knock the finsh down with a green rice pot scrubber. This gives you a matte looking finish plus a speed finish to boot.Aloha,Kokua

well the rubbing compound idea sounds like it could produce the results i need…ill give that a try…

i still might invest in a small ammount of dolphin skin, but if its anything like the last acrylic sealer i had i wont like it…i actually threw away about half a quart of it, just so i would stop being temped to use it… i hated the way it looked…

i just want my boards to look exactly like they do now, but just not pick up fingerprints so easy… thats dolphin skins claim i suppose, “whipe it on whipe it off, contains teflon so it repels fingerprints”… but it also says it produces a high luster that gives the appearence of hours of work…that part makes me think its just like that other crap i threw out…

oh well i guess i should just spend the money and find out first hand, instead of asking…but im a cheap sob i guess, i just dont like wasting money on stuff i dont need…

but i do think the compound idea could be something, ill try that on a already completed board as soon as i have time… then ill go change the oil in my car then grab the board and see hat happens…haha…

Howzit onion, Are you looking for a shiny finish. Just what did the acrylic finish you had look like that you didn’t like it. The finish I get with the process I explained looks just like a sanded finish but won’t leave finger prints. By using rubbing compound you do run the risk of hitting weave and I don’t think that’s what you are looking for. Aloha,Kokua

never let any body toch your board after they have been handling chocolate, red whine or freehanding ahi poke.

These finger prints will not come out!
