Hey guys, Yesterday I just bought all my Tools, and Materials. Take a look if you want. I’ll begin shaping my board when I find a teacher/consultant hopefully by the end of this month.
that salty fin is sick…mmm bosch is probably cheaper but both work fine. doesn’t really matter, and if its your first one you want want to do it all by hand to understand how each pass effect the outcome of the final product. im a big fan of rigid products they last a long time. also you may want to invest in a spoke shave. the 10`2 is a meaty board, but a great blank to use… post pics of the progress! and let the stoke begin
Thank you, It’s a bamboo fin, 65$… By hand I Shall find the board within!
Can’t I use my mini-plane for the stringer instead of the spoke shave? I’ll concider buying the spoke shave after some reasoning behind it.
I returned the ridgid trim router because it was too small… and only gave me 1", I got the Ryobi router for 60$, can give me 2" for putting in the finbox and leash hole.
I just finished my first board. I have one of the Home Depot Bosch Planers and it felt really good, I only used it to skin the blank on this one because it’s my first but even only skinning the blank can be good practice to get the feel of how a planer cuts foam. I guess that after skinning a couple more blanks I will build up the courage to use the planer on rocker and railbands, it’s a precision tool and is good to learn how to use it.
I don’t have a spokeshave but got the violin makers finger planer, it’s a really good and easy to use tool for the stringer although it’s expensive. My other block plane is one of those useless cheap BuckBros but I sharpened it using the “scary sharp” method and it actually works pretty well.
Norton Sand Paper is good, will last longer, for the 2 by 4’s I have a 10" and a 24", I glued a piece of “kids indoor playground puzzle mats” on each 2 by 4" and then glued the sand paper to that, if you are not careful, wood alone can catch an edge when flattening the blank. Also make sure your shaping stands are level, this is very important… get a level.
Also don’t forget to take it slow and have fun and if you are shaping outdoors, never ever leave a board unattended without some weight to hold it down (read my first shape thread). Please, post pictures of your progress. What do you plan to shape with that blank and for what waves will it be used?
Congratulations TonyLion! I hope one day after shaping boards by hand, I’ll use a power planer.
I’ll make sure to use the “Scary Sharp” method for my BuckBros Planer, thank you for that.
I’m going to be making a 10" Glider, I just changed the Subject name of this thread. The waves would be around 4-6’ normally here in San Diego, hoping to move to New Zealand where the waves are going to be around 6-10’ after i finish my education!
Spokeshave for nose rocker stringer trimming I can be difficult with a flat plane. An easier way to install the leash plug is a fortsner bit. 1 1/4 I use. Or you could do a old school leash loop. But it depends on the size of your plug. And te ryobi laminating router is a good router. Every blank has a board inside it.
You can make them out of 2x4 for like 10$. Greenlightsurfsupply.com has a design for one. As well as a glassing stand design also. Or you could weld a set if you good at that
http://greenlightsurfsupply.com/templates.aspx These guys have a lot of info, check out the last page of the site map. Those are the stands I made but with some reinforcements, I will post pics when I can. Very important make sure you build them to be used on a level floor and level them. I used a level, an old Shopmate door planer and my surform to level them.
Edit 2: I returned the benches, and bought four 2x4’s, along with two 2x2’s, two 5 Gallon buckets, 60 lbs. of Concrete, and a Stanley SharpTooth Saw, didn’t buy the spoke shave or squeegee yet…
Howzit Syladis, Don't hang your respirator like that because the strap will stretch and then it's no good and put it in a Ziplok because it will continue to filter air even if it's not being used and then ot won't work when you need to use it. That must be a new Ridgid model 6" orbital because mine is 4 years old and the handle is straught and doesn't curve downward. Other than that it looks like you spent some money on tools and materials but you still need some scissors and some other things but you will pick those up as you do more boards and figure out what you need. Aloha,Kokua
Thank you for kokua for the notice and about the respirator before it became too late, I put the filters in a Ziplok and layed down the respirator.
According to my school I can’t start until I get a adviser to help. My teacher says she has someone, going to see her about it later today. I will update news about it as soon as possible.
syladis those racks are actually fine… if im not mistaken i remember a wood working having racks almost exactly like that… i wish i remembered who had those in his garage… huck may know. just put some soft pads in the top and shape in that flip it to glass.
Hey, you live in San Diego, another neat thing you could do is go to Pacific Beach Point when there are waves and see if you can spot Skip Frye on one of his gliders. Try to start a conversation and tell him about your project, I don’t know him personally but I heard he is a really cool guy and his gliders are awesome.
@ a2tall, Darn, I’ve already returned them though…
@Tony, I’ve seen Skip on his eagle before, quite beautiful.
I just got myself a mentor! Going to cost me a blank for him, no big deal. I’m going to go see him tomorrow and talk things over. I’ll mention swaylocks and the fella’s here whom are helpful, I’ll keep this updated and tell ya’ll how it goes tomorrow.
