Five Ten Twin Keel Fish...

Folk’s - I did an ok job on my last board, so I decided I want to build a Old school Fish w pulled in tail at 9 1/4"- 9 1/2." the wp is going to be forward center 3", and my nose is wider 17" x 16 " tail. I’m going a little thinner to! ,2.5" thick - with a low boxy rail… Pure Summer/spring board! I’m going a bit thinner on the nose/tail foil also… basically, I’m going to surf it for a month, and sell it for a deal.

Some mods: accelerated tail rocker (continuous rocker). Maybe slight vee? I just want to keep it simple.

Need suggestions on possible concaves? A part of me wants a single to dub concaves, but I am thinking it.might be better not to ,until I shape a few more? I just want a nice clean shape.

Fins! I located some Clyde Beatty keel fins in fiberglass - which I’ll use on this board.Plus! I’m going to glass it dub four feck, four bottom. Its getting gloss -fuck it! Cheers! Pics coming in twenty mins of my first layer planed off! Folk’s - I’m backyard n it, and the wind was kinda blowing dust so I stopped for the day. Tommorow I’ll take two more layers off bottom, one off deck. Check thicknesses at 12" from tips, center, and it’s going to be a little surform work - just to slightly knock down planer marks, then blocking it out w 60 gr, then 80 gr to rough thickness. After that - off to drawing on my template!

Tip of the day: I centered my blank prior to sawing off the tip ends. I decided to subtract 3" off front half (total length for a five ten), and cut it off 1/8" over size, and I measured out 3’ for rear half, so 33" for front half… and I left 1/8" extra at the rear…oops! It just dawned on me my template was for my 5’11" -No biggie, I’ll just take a extra inch off tail side. The tip is give n yourself a xtra 1/8" around your design so that you don’t over shape it…

Update! I had a slight change of plans as my template didn’t match w curves to fit my dims… it ended up being: 17 1/4" nose, 22" wp forward center 2", 16 1/2" tail, 9 1/2" wide tail block width at rear end x 3 1/2" deep. I also used a med raked thruster fin to draw my fish tail cut out.

I thought you said concaves were overated, andnot needed?..Didn’t I hear you say that in a post a few weeks back?  Us internetters have the memories of elephants…where strange like that.

I didn’t respond to that comment because I didn’t want to start a pissing match with whom ever told you that nonsense.  I put concaves on all my performance boards…Fishes not so much, because a fish is not a performance board. Fishes are fat planks with 2 fins, that don’t go backside so well…see I said the truth.

Anyhow it’s impossible to explain a concave on the internet for a specific board. You are blending rocker, rail line and concaves. it’s more art than science.

hell yes get a gloss…dam straight!!!  I want to see ya glass that varmit too!! Nuts to bolts…  Don’t get soft on us now Shapa.

That aught ta kick off the debate…Git er done.

Nope I never said anything about concaves - other than I think they’re great!

Resinhead - ty for your .02, but you must be talking about someone else?

I personally -love concaves. But I also like rolled bottom, flat bottom boards and that’s all I’ve tried.

I you know your boards, but have you ever tried a fish w pulled in tail? I can’t tell you how SWEET my late twin was… no board is gonna work in all conditions usually… maybe you should shape one. I bet you’d like it. But surf it in at least 2-3" solid surf k.Cheers

…will you make the keels , too ?

not this time, I bought Clyde Beatty rocket fish fins (glass ons). But I got a piece of marine plywood to foil sum fins, but I’m trying to figure it out…I’ll make those for a tester model (eps) I’m going to shape so I could let Folk’s try my designs. It’s gonna be a 5’8".

Ah…I cut roughly 1 1/2" off nose end, and 1 1/16" off tail after measuring my length etc… I used my square, drew a straight line and sawed it off square 1/8" outside my lines…it’s my way. Rocker Apex is @ 35 1/4" from tips! Wp will be forward my apex …argggg! Build n isn’t easy - nothing’s easy.

Then I cut straight down stringer from tail to nose 1/8" deep…

Then I planed just outside the blank at roughly a 40 deg angle -doin corn rows…do 1st pass, put shoe on next step it made, repeat to center that was cut out, then repeat the process on op side…

Color will not be green, but a opaque Color blend…it’ll be cool.

To be continued…

The plan in the am is to take one more 1/8" pass on my bottom, one off deck - which gives me 1/8" xtra for sanding etc…

outta site fishie “little wing”

Matt - those things look good!

Getting ready for shaping! Just having coffee and spicey ramen noodles…

No cross cutting today, but I should be real soon. Sadly, I have to piece meal it - as landlord comes and goes…two more layers will be a “rough out” for my 2.5" thick x 22" wide fishy… debating what bottom shape to go with? I saw a cool twinzer fish w roll to panel vee. It looks clean tho! I’ll figure it out. How do any of you do your bottom rails on a Fish?

Errr?..

Isn’t a fish with a pulled in tail a funshape?   Maybe were splitting hairs abot what a fish is?   A fish is a Lis Fish Knee board shape,  all others are either twin fins…a la Mark Richards boards in the late 70’s early 80’s, or the Rocket fish…which in my humble opinion is a funshape, that can be setp as a  quad, tri fin or twinny.

You got a plan…go with it.

Hell yes gloss it.

it could be a " fun shape ", but yeah - just go with it… terms can be so confusing. I always thought a swallow tail was the straight cut split
Tail, and fish HAS curved cuts…Question: doesn’t Lis make surfboard based on Fish also? I geuss the knee board Fish was the predecessor to the stand up versions
.

Resinhead- check out Zippi Fish surfboards! I haven’t ridden one, but I’m a Fish fan, and I’ve seen his boards in magazines etc., for yrs. I also - like I said earlier unknowingly ordered my fish w 8" tail at the tail block …which turned out to be a good thing. Ive taken off on back wash over 12 feet high and somehow made it? I suppose I learned to angle my board and side slip? Turns are much more hp oriented I think. Add wings and it gets even crazier…

very close…

What kind of Dinosaur was the Predecessor?  Was it one of those flying contraptions wit the pelican type beak?

Hey Matty cool board what is the story behind it - yours?  Solid balsa?  What is up with fin ding repair?

Hi Jim is this your infamous Green Machine fish?  Who’s the goofy footer?  Nice shot!

Yeah I won it on EBay trying to help a fellow shaper.

Hey the Balsa is worth what I paid.

Look up “Balsaflite” interesting story worth doing.

Chambered balsa and very nice work.

The fin mess up was all the bad, Knee board to me!

Redid it sitting in my living room,

cleaned up nice - I’m getting the itch to build a few more woodies soon!

Don’t get a “woodie” for the woodies till ya can’t surf anymore.

Got beaucoup info on balsawood (sustainable).

Seen your work, Artwork almost too nice to ride!!!

Here’s the other pic! It shows how fun a fish can be…

Here’s a pic show n what is possible on one…I’ve got air only once! But after 12 wasted waves I was happy I got a lousy 1/2 foot air…but landed in white water and kept goin! Mind you, my fish had a pulled in tail! I doubt I could do it again, but I could try!
